  1. I would give AAS a little more time. I think the more years they have read, the more they have a sense of what "looks right." This isn't to dismiss understanding how words and spelling and rules work. AAS should give your child a good base in that. If you press on and things do not seem to improve, then maybe you need a different approach like Apples and Pears.
  2. My boys have completed two years of self-paced and we are planning to do it again next year. I love having one subject outsourced and they learn so much! I buy the same course for both of them (each under their own subscription), so they do the work independently, but we do the literature together. As mentioned, it is a very interactive program. I'm confident there are some parents who teach it all to all their children and successfully stay away from screens, but I really needed an extra hand and VPSP did that for us.
  3. Sorry, I skipped the grammar because I was using it with a first grader at the time. The program is great, but I can't speak to the grammer.
  4. I switched my boys to ELtL. We had completed WWE2 and I like the more integrated approach of ELtL. Since my guys had very little grammar, we did ELtL level 2 this year which was a great grammar introduction. We are planning to do ELtL level 3 this coming school year. As for the narrations, I understand what you meant about it being a step backwards. I just continue to require my children to do both types of narration even though the text did not. It is easy to say, I want a summary instead of every single detail today. We have been very happy with it. I also liked WWE 1 and 2, and will do those with my girls before going over to ELtL.
  5. I know you already know about it, but I LOVE Right Start B for first grade! There are also a lot of good activities in MEP 1a and 1b. YOu could do the activities without doing the writing on the worksheets. I would think most first grade math programs could be done orally.
  6. My son is working his way through Horizons 5. What would be the sequence to get from where we are to Jacobs Elementary Algebra. Horizons 6 to pre-algebra? to Jacobs? Besides Horizons, he has also done MEP 1-4 and SM CWP. I don't think we will do MEP 5 because doing two math programs is becoming too time consuming.. This child is generally quick to understand mathematical concepts and problem solving. Thanks for any advice.
  7. I bought it on sale last year. I had very good intentions of using it this year. My boys did make up some of their own notebooking pages using the app for a few of the books we did. I'd say it is worth the $50 if you use it. I don't think I used it $50 worth and I don't think I used the regular notebooking pages at all. But I did like it and it worked like advertised. I'm the one who didn't work like advertised on notebooking. I just wasn't into it.
  8. MP is the best set I have seen for this age level.
  9. These responses along with the link to the other thread, have been very helpful to me! Thank you!
  10. Thanks for responding! I am familiar with our state requirements and the road to a homeschool diploma for our state. I have not fully engaged to ask questions about where she is at exactly, mostly because I'm mostly just generally exploring what are the possiblities. I don't believe she is looking to go to college at this time. I think she is looking to dance, but wants to make sure she has educational options in the future since a dancing career probably will not last forever. I'm mostly looking for her choices with or without me in the picture.
  11. I need advice. You can see by the ages of my own children I have no experience with this. At our dance studio, there is a young lady who will be a sophomore next year and needs to devote much more time to her ballet instruction/practice than public school schedule allows. Cyber school does not seem to be a good option for her because of the time requirements. Her mother works and does not feel comfortable leaving the young lady alone everyday at home. I would be willing to oversee her education, with her mother still being considered the homeschool supervisor on paper. j But I would need a high school curriculum (secular) that can pretty much be self-driven. I'm ofcourse, willing to teach, help, advise, but I'm going to be way out of my league without a very good curriculum. Online classes would NOT be a good option because of specific time slot commitments. She is bright and advanced compared to public school standards. What are some options for companies/curricula bor building a very flexible sophomore program? Thank you so much for your help.
  12. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I have had a lot to think about this week as we did math. Like why did we start with CLE? Is it still the best program for this particular child? How can I not bore him but make sure he is fluent in operations? Are ALL the problems necessary? Thank you for all your advice and opinions. It surely helps to get other people's perspectives.
  13. My 2nd grader by age, is currently half way through CLE Math 4. He has been with CLE from the beginning. He can do the math. It is the right challenge level, but it is simply too many problems (4-5 pages) for his age. I'm not sure what to do. I could cross off problems, or I could have him only do half a lesson a day, but that doesn't seem right because it would slow him down. I have also been considering switching him over to Horizons. My other son does Horizons and I'm happy with the program and it IS less work. I just feel weird about jumping ship on CLE when it has been working. He also works in MEP and Challenging Word Problems. Neither of those present a problem with length of lesson. Any btdt advice?
  14. I'll post to save you from that position ! Reading: Good books Spelling: Dictation Day By Day Grammar: English Lessons Through Literature Writing: CAP Fable to start Latin: Big Book of Latin 1 Bible: Picture Smart Bible Math: CLE, MEP, and CWP Science: Mr. Q's Earth Science and CLP Nature Reader History: VP Self-Paced Other: Recitations, Poetry, Music, Art, Geography, Phys. Ed., Picture Study
  15. I've used both Horizons and CLE (with different children). Horizons Grade 1 Math is more rigorous than CLE grade 1 Math, but both are very good solid programs. I don't feel one of my children has a better math education over the other. They are both good. I would suggest starting with CLE K II and then moving into CLE 100 OR doing Horizons K for Math. I think either would work well. I'm a fan of both.
  16. I bought W&R Fable when it first came out with hopes of combining my boys. I still have hopes but I have put it off. We are going to make our attempt at the start of next school year: 3rd/4th. I have no idea how it will go, but I'm hopeful. I don't think it would have worked at all for us this year. The younger was definitely not ready.
  17. I've used MEP 1-4. The teacher lessons are essential to the curriculum. The teacher lessons take quite a bit of time. I did not think it took less of my time as they got older. Every 5th page can be done independently and requires very little teaching. I did group a lot of the teacher portions together and saved the exercises in the book to be done by the student at the end instead of sitting with each child for the entire lesson.
  18. I was a beta tester for foundations so everything was digital downloads and it worked okay. But now that I'm doing it with a second child I'm buying all the workbooks, because it is just easier (even though I have the files!) So you can easily see what my preference is. The only thing I'm not excited about is that the shipping is high. For me, one workbook is like $18, but another $9 to ship it! Hoping to pick it up at a convention instead.
  19. Never heard of CLE offering a sale. At homeschool conventions, I don't believe they discount, but they do offer free shipping.
  20. Elson Readers come in paperback and many of the Yesterday's Classics.
  21. You might like the Picture Smart Bible for the younger set. They have one curriculum for the olders and one for the youngers. It is like journaling but designed for little children. You use whatever Bible you want to go with it.
  22. I prefer the fourth. I own the sixth and there is a lot more information in it, that just muddied the waters for me. I prefer my 4th edition.
  23. I do a dictation program that is called Dictation Day by Day. I also looked at the Simply Charlotte Mason program. I looked at Spelling You See at convention last year, and I was just not convinced it was going to be any more effective than the dictation we already do. It was more colorful and had the fun workbook, but as for effectiveness, I didn't see how it would be better. And, Dictation Day by Day is free :o)
