    So is the CLE Algebra 1 a solid program?

    I don't like the Key To... workbooks at all.  We tried them for fractions, and ended up with Math Mammoth which was much better for her. I know MM is mastery, but the teaching was excellent and then we just did lots and lots of practice. 

     

    We are using CLE Algebra 1 and I am super happy with it.  We did both 700 and 800 before moving to it and it went very well.  I have no regrets thus far.  I have no idea what we are going to do when we finish Algebra I.  I'm trying not to think about it.

    My 2nd grader is nearing the end of Writing with Ease 1, but still cannot answer the questions at the end of the passage.  Even if I read the passage numerous times, she really has no idea.  When I read aloud any books, unless there are pictures or diagrams, she has very little comprehension.  On the other hand, if she reads a book herself, she can give a very  good retelling.  I am quite frustrated with her lack of auditory comprehension, and I'm not sure what else to do.  We work on narration all the time, but she just cannot do it unless she has read it herself (and it is on her reading level or easier).

     

    Should I move onto WWE 2 next year?

    Thanks.  I took a look and she hasn't posted since 2016, but it was a good idea!

     

    I have emailed her twice (livelylatin at livelylatin dot com) and she's responded both times, though it took her a few days.

    Scheduling Lively Latin BB1

    My oldest is going to be starting Big Book 2 in the fall.  I'm working out a schedule now.  I'm planning on BB2 taking us two years.  I'm hoping to get as close as I can to a four day/week schedule but there is a lot more content in BB2.  If anyone needs a sample schedule as a starting point for BB2, let me know and I'll post it when I finish.

    Rod and Staff Math?

    R&S was the first math book my math struggler was finally successful in.

     

    This was my experience with my youngest.  I tried RightStart, MEP, and Horizons.   Finally after a year in Rod and Staff we are having success.  At first I mourned over not doing the same programs her siblings used, but now I know this is a deceptively strong program and its slow and steady method is working.

    Inexpensive elementary geometry and graphs??

    She may be very weak on subitization skills.  For most, we are born with some basic sense of subitization.  For most that basic sense continues to develop and strengthen naturally over time as they are exposed to math.  Basic subitization is the foundation of math.  For others those basic internal subitization skills do not develop smoothly and may need extensive, detailed, long term explicit instruction. Also for those that are not born with strong subitization skills it may also take more physical time for their brain to be able to internalize the instruction.  In other words this area of the brain sometimes develops more slowly so more time is needed for brain development as well.  You might look into Ronit Bird materials.

    At 6 years old I would slow it down, work at her pace, maybe pick one thing to work on each week while also doing some small review each day of previous material.  Keep lessons very short.  Try to avoid undermining her confidence and developing a hatred of math.  She may not be ready for math in a formal sense.  Does she do well with real life math?  Like measuring with measuring cups and playing store with VERY basic amounts (no decimals yet)?  Does she do o.k. playing with manipulatives?

    Well, to be honest she will turn 7 shortly.  My first mistake was to start K when she turned 5; I just assumed she would be ready like the others were.  We tried Rightstart and MEP, and they were total fails.  So this year we did Rod and Staff ducky math which was still too fast.  Again I wish we had done K this past year, but she is so proud of what grade she is in. 

     

    She often lacks understanding of common concepts, like she still is confused about whether she feels hot or cold, or if ice freezes or burns.  She did great with Rod and Staff 1st grade phonics and reading.  She also did Pathway reading.  So I'd say she is right on level there.  She also has beautiful penmanship, both cursive and manuscript.   I have no idea why math is so hard for her.  She plays with math manipulatives, but after two years she still doesn't recognize 7 on an abacus.  She only quickly recognizes 5 and under.  She can measure fine with a ruler and with measuring cups and totally understands this.  She is on grade level with counting coins.  She can add and subtract with objects.

    My youngest really really struggles with math.  All the awesome things I did with the older children does not work with her.  Thus, she is going to be doing a very traditional basic math program next year.  She needs lots of easy slow steps and much repetition. 

     

    However, the program I'm going to use has no geometry at all nor graphing in it.  Is there some sort of program you can think of that just covers these topics so I can supplement her program?  I browsed currclick but couldn't find anything easily.  I also looked at Kumon Geometry book but surprisingly the second grade book had very very little actual geometry in it.

    I admit to using MEP and another math curriculum at the same time grades 1-3 for my first three children.  After that it was too much work to really keep two programs going fully.  For year 4 I used it more like a supplement and it wasn't as successful for us.  I do print out the teacher manual because it is crucial.  There are many parts to the lesson that are not on the student sheet. 

     

    I do not consider it quite open and go because there are often materials you need to have ready.  However, the teacher manual gives great instructions usually. 

    Help! Need advice on Rod & Staff's new 1st grade phonics?

    I used the old edition this year and I really liked it.  The phonics program is really strong, and I like the Bible stories for reading.  That said, I thought the reading workbooks were a lot of busy work that we didn't need, so we only did the phonics workbook with the readers.  I heard that the new program focuses more on phonics in the stories and less on sight words to get going.  I had talked to someone who beta tested the new program and she loved the changes.  If I were you I would get the new one and just cross of pages if I felt it was too much.  Hope that helps.
