  1. WOW!!!! ya'll are great, thanks for the encouragement. I am planning mine now. My husband said I could rearrange and set up the 1st of march, No moving furniture until then, I cannot wait to get it all set up!!! nancyt.
  2. Writing is Tough for alot of students, They have been told to write about something, but the words are not there. I Love the teaching of IEW. It is great, Mr Puduwa on the Student Writing Intensive DVD's, makes it so much easier. he starts with teaching key word outlines from Aesop's Fables, and such. Then from the key word outline rewriting them in their own words. However, he goes through banned words, writes down Quality Adjectives, Strong Verbs and so on to use. So kids have the words in front of them they can choose from, It starts them to thinking, and using words then they continue to work at a harder level. It is the greatest writing program I have found. nancyt.
  3. I have always FAILED at trying to do a planning for the year, we never do on the day we are supposed to do it. I feel like a terrible mother and teacher. I like ya'lls idea. Thank you so much. nancyt.
  4. We have used SOTW 1,2,3 and next year 4. We Definately always use the activity guide. The teachers part has so much great info to share with the student. the maps help the children see where their studies are, and the coloring pages lets them see things that relate to time period as well as country. IMHO it is necessary, nancyt.
  5. My daughter has always had a hard time with math. We started teaching textbooks and she is doing great. I feel alot of moms I spoke to in my homeschooling arena, were all critical of TT, Oh it is behind, it is slower, Well if you look at their progression on their web page, they will be taking all the higher maths at the same time other textbooks do. However, TT teaches with alot of help explaining and correction. It may not be for all students as Saxon or Abeka is not for all students. I believe it is a perfect fit for our home. I dont worry about the behind or slow or what ever is said about it. If your children learn, they are not stressed out, but they are happy in learning, i believe you have a win win situation. nancyt.
  6. I LOVE IEW. I went through the TWSS twice, for the past two years I have been teaching the writing to our CO-OP, last year i taught the elementary the SWI A, This year I am teaching the Middle School Early American History. It has been great. It builds on itself. I was sitting in our teachers lounge with our highschool teacher who was grading some essays. Her essay format was just like what I am teaching the middlers. Her students were having a hard time, Not any of them that I know of had used IEW, I explained that to my middleschool class, and let them know they practice now, highschool will be much easier. HTH, nancyt.
  7. I actually Like using the SWR and the Wise guide. I think it is great and thoroughly covers everything for the young. and still works up to the older children. It has been very thorough. It even has the cd's for spelling. you can use them likek the IEW Spelling Zoo. nancyt.
  8. You would not believe how many times I have sold something because I needed the money, just to turn around a few months later and rebuy it. Praise the Lord for used books!!! I have rebought things sometimes 3 or 4 times. UGH!!!!! Maybe I just need to be more thoughtful and organized. nancyt.
  9. I like the use of the DVD's for several reasons. I know alot of parents are capable of teaching Latin without the DVD"s, but it saves us parents as teachers the talking and explaining, and the Teacher on the DVD"s does an excellent job. It gives me a break. I also love to sit and listen to the DVD's myself and watch as my child is learning. It gives me a better understanding, and it also makes sure I dont leave something out. nancyt.
  10. It looks like you have done a great job, of my friends that do CC they love it. I have friends that teach it plus send their children. They are learning alot. It is really great. Your chldren are spread out so you have done a great job at combining with giving them individual work. I always loved the magic school bus. My daughter learned more about science through that than alot of other things i have tried. Great Job!!!!! nancyt.:iagree:
  11. I honestly HATE testing students. What does it prove. You may not have taught a particular subject that year that is being tested, Does that mean they are behind, You may use a math curriculum that doesn't cover the same as another math curriculum, and yes they are different. Does that make them not knowledgeable in math. I have alot of friends who take tests each year. Our Homeschool League does testing each year in march, Parents seem to get in an uproar every hear, worrying if their children are on target. my words are "On target for what, and for who" Who are "THEY" that says this is where a child should be. Should be compared to what. If I am going to compare my child to a public school child, well I should say there is no comparison. That is not a condescension, it is merely stating, public school and homeschool are and should be night and day. I want my daughter to love to learn, to seek learning for herself, to grow in her God given bent. I do not want her to learn to take a test, and learn to take another test, and so on and so on as the cog turns. It seems insanity to me. I am an older homeschool mom, I went to the Government Schools. I learned nothing, however, i would have had an A+ in socializing, but that was not because of the school that was my God given personality. Academically I learned NOTHING!!! My oldest two daughters now 26 and 27 went to the same Highschool and they Learned Absolutely NOTHING!!!!! my oldest decided to teach school in Houston Texas, and was against me homeschooling my youngest daughter who is 10. Since she has taught in Government schools, she has totally changed her mind and said they are nothing but a waste. Praise the Lord for homeschooling and the choices each individual parent can make. I am totally against testing until highschool to prepare for college. HTH. nancyt.
  12. I absolutely love TOG, however, reading all their info, and trying to use it with my Elementary Student, it was way to costly. I believe as the writer says, it is geared towards highschool students, but has the other sections for UG/LG. But for what they learn at this age, the SOTW will allow for activity and map pages, more on their level, and you can always add in the other books from the library that would enhance the history. for highschool i would definately prefer TOG, it has great parent planning, the socratic questioning. God bless on your choices. nancyt.:)
  13. We are in a CO-OP using SOTW, I chose to do the pdf for my daughter, and it worked out great. I had no problems, I could print off when i was ready to use each segment. It was nice because the pages dont get bent and messed up. We can use it as we need it. i thought it was great. nancyt.:iagree:
  14. Hi, I have had alot of people tell me not to use Shurley....but guess what, we use Shurley. I have tried Easy Grammar, Abeka, and several other Grammar programs. Shurley makes since to me, I hear all the time it is too intensive for the teacher. Well, that is what I am, So i sit with my daughter and we go over it together. I personally dont feel it is so intensive. When she does the vocab, she does it on her on. I check it afterward. We go over the sentence answer flow together, I actually enjoy this part, It helps me concrete things in my mind. Use what works best for you. and What you like, if you like it, it is easier to teach. Nancyt.
  15. If they are doing so well in spelling, i would not do a spelling program, Lot of good reading in literature. Doing Vocabulary from the good literature, history or science. I would not waste my time. Now that is just mho. But I would maybe do latin roots or something like that It would be so interesting, and help with vocab and everything. a good one i found is Vocabulary from classical roots. hth, nanct.
  16. AI really like IEW writing programs. If you use the DVD's Andrew Puduwa is excellent at keeping a child's attention. I have taught it to 1-8th graders for the past two years in co-op. It definately meets, visual, kinesthetic, and other learning styles.
  17. Hi, Apologia exploring creation books are really good books, but my daughter things they are boring studying the same thing over and over and over, and as someone else said, a bit texty.....I like the reading of books by sonlight, and the teachers guide is great for questions and things to do. It just seems more interesting to me. less school bookish. hth, nancyt
  18. Thank you for responding, I would say my daughter is a cross between sociable and wiggly. I would also say it would be in that order. nancyt.
  19. In easy grammar if you get the big book it has the teachers section on the left side and the students on the right. it has the explanations on the teachers side... you could buy the workbook separately, but if you are using with just one student just buy the teachers book that includes the students. but yes you would need the teachers book, it has the explanations in it. We have just started using this grammar program and my daughter loves it.
  20. We are doing SOTW Vol 3 in a co-op, my daughter is 5th grade, we are still reading it together and i am doing most of the reading. She is a good reader, but gets bored reading it. HTH
  21. I am planning our next years school, you know searching out what we want, saving the money, and on and on we go. However, my daughter is TERRIBLE in math. she will be in 6th grade. What are some suggestions? I need some good advise. Thanks in advance. nancyt.
  22. It seems to me, that when something new comes out about teaching God. Satan gets involved and tries to ruin it. But we all know who is the winner!!!!! Look at the criticism as Satan wanting to squelch this and it is something very Good.
  23. I agree with all of the above posts. It is a great store. I have been going there for years now. The owner is a friend and awesome person. She has homeschooled 3 of her children that are grown and one that is going into 7th grade this year. She started in her garage many years ago, it has grown into a very reputable business. I pray since she sells online now and all her books are online, that it will really take off. I do know people come to the store from Mississippi, Alabama, all parts of Florida, And some from northern states. She is very fair in her pricing, and has new and used books in the store. God bless, nancty.
  24. I dont like the name Social Studies. I totally believe it is a Government School Word. Teaching more Social things going on instead of the True History to study. But if you cover History, Geography and Government, you are getting social studies. nancyt.
  25. I totally love CM Pet Store, Personally i would probably choose the book store. It is simple to understand, but very helpful at understanding finances. This is so important. Dave Ramsey is good also, But my preference would be the CM. nancyt.:)
