  1. Does anyone know if TT plans to offer a calculus curriculum down the road? My ds will be doing the geometry next year and if all goes well we may stick with TT. Thanks
  2. This is you! I can vouch for that! Mine always has been me! But it is from about 5 years ago. Maybe time for an update. If only I could find a better pic.
  3. I pulled both my dds out of PS at the end of 3rd and 5th grades. My decision was made after I went to parent visitation during their final years. Oldest dd was in the once a week science class. The teacher was boring and down right nasty. I remember they were studying sea life. He had some very old specimens he was passing around the room. They were in old discolored ziploc bags so you couldn't really see anything and he told they students they were not permitted to open the bags. Really???? No wonder kids dislike science! I sat in on my younger dds math class. They were studying Roman numerals. Most of the kids already knew the material but the teacher didn't move on because a few students weren't understanding. I walked out that day knowing we can do so much better than this at home! And this is one of the best school districts in the county. That was 9 years ago. My oldest has graduated and is in college studying psychology. Our younger dd is getting ready to start her senior year. My ds was never in PS and will be starting high school at home this fall. It isn't always easy but it is the best thing we can do for our dc. It is a great adventure with many ups and downs but in the end totally worth it!
  4. When we studied British Lit last year our favorites were: Pride and Prejudice Frankenstein 1984 (oldest dd 12th grade, 10th grader read Animal Farm) We also read Jane Eyre. The girls did not like this as much as Pride and Prejudice but I really enjoyed it!
  5. Yes we used IEW in 11th and 12th grades with her. I really think the structure helped her tremendously! I also worked on outline with her consistantly. Somehow she managed to pull it all together and do very well.
  6. Hi all, I wanted to update everyone on my dd who dropped out of nursing school in the fall. She was accepted into the local state university and started in January. In the fall she completed her English comp class at the nursing school and received an A. I was shocked as she always struggled with writing (at least I thought so). She is finishing her finals this week and it looks like she will do very well. Her speech communications professor asked to use several of her outlines as examples for future classes. She has found her groove! She has decided to major in psychology as she wants to help people. She knows she will need at least a masters degree and she is now talking about a PhD. This from the girl who never saw the purpose for school. She is thriving and loves college! I stand in awe of it all. Homeschooling works!
  7. Wow! Thanks for all the great ideas. I am definately off to check out some more interesting stuff to add to her course!
  8. Laurie I am right there with you. I will have a 9th grader and a 12th grader. Seems like the fun is gone and I sometimes long for the days of elementary school! Everything seems so serious now. My 9th grade ds is easy to school but my 12th grade dd never seems to like learning and usually has an attitude most days. Maybe I need a cruise as well...... Or just a long break!
  9. I am planning on using this for my dd in the fall. I know that SWB recommends it in her high school writing lecture. She likes the structure but not the style techniques. We only have one year as my dd will be a senior and that is why I chose it. That is about all I can offer at the moment.
  10. I am working on planning a Greek mythology course per my dd's request. She will be a senior. She has never read any of the ancient Greek works. So far this is what I have scratched out: TTC Vandiver lectures on Classical Mythology, the Illiad, and the Odyssey Edith Hamilton's Mythology C.S. Lewis Till We Have Faces Ancient Readings: Ovid Metamorphoses Theogony The Illiad The Odyssey Then I will have her write a paper with the topic yet to be chosen. Does this look like enough for a HS senior? Would this be worth a HS credit? Any ideas for paper topics or anything else I should add to the course? I have the Classical Mythology and More: A Reader Workbook but am not sure how to incorporate it into our studies. It also seems to be below the level of a HS senior. Thanks!
  11. My dd will be doing the following: MUS Precalculus Apologia Marine Bio English: BJU 12 grammar portion only, Teaching Rhetoric Through Structure and Style (IEW), more LToW, World Lit class at our homeschool group Logic/Critical Thinking: Traditional Logic 2 and A Rulebook for Argument workbook Greek History and Mythology: Using TTC Classical Mythology, Famous Greeks, Vandiver Illiad and Odyssey lectures, SMARR Mythology Guide, and whatever other resources I can find Economics BJU American History: Civil War - Present Thinking Like A Christian Still deciding if we will add psychology to the mix.
  12. Here is my ds almost complete schedule. I am still trying to decide on world history. English: LLfLoR, essay and speech class at our homeschool group, Wordly Wise, BJU grammar only. Science: Apologia biology Geometry: TT World History: Ancients and Medieval history using? (looking at BJU right now) Bible: Route 66 - Positive Action Bible Computer Programming: Teen Coder C# Logic: Traditional Logic I Electives at our homeschool group - physical education and a semester of photography.
  13. Eilzabeth/Holly, Maybe this needs to be a spin off thread but I am curious what you like so much about the BJU world history? I had considered that for my ds next year and spreading it out over two years as Holly suggested. Guess I am looking at the Stobaugh stuff thinking this is not enough.
  14. Some days I have no idea how to resolve things either! I am doing ancients (and hopefully medieval) with my 9th grade ds in the fall. I have all these resources; HoAW, Kingfisher (white) History of the World, videos from TTC, Stobaugh's new World History. Still trying to decide a path to take. Didn't help that I stumbled on the 625 post CiRCE thread on the K-8 board. My head is spinning right now. Deep breaths! That's what I keep telling myself.
  15. What went wrong was I thought I wanted a timeline and my dc did not! Of course when we start falling behind the timeline goes out the window. If your dd is asking for one, it will probably go very well. Here is a link to a really cool timeline figure template that allows you to make your own figures. Your dd might really enjoy it: http://guesthollow.com/homeschool/history/timeline.html. If you scroll down to about the middle of the page you will find the templates. We actually used this for my ds this spring to make a PA history timeline (the only one we ever completed!). Yes the Abeka book is a one semester text. They just revised it and it would definately allow you the freedom to supplement as the BJU text is four times as thick!
  16. Well.... my ds just took a world geography class at our homeschool group and they used the Abeka text. One thing I liked about the class was the teacher had them do little projects such as watch a video and answer questions about the country. I wonder if you could incorporate something like that into your history? Or what about something like World History Map Activites: https://walch.com/samplepages/028803.pdf? I have used that for dd and liked it. Don't tell anyone but every time we have tried the timeline route it has been an "epic fail" as my dc would say! We are going to give it the ole' college try again this fall when my ds does Ancient history.
  17. Hey Elizabeth, The TM contains all the answers to the section review and chapter review questions. There are some additional activity suggestions in the TM but honestly between what was in the textbook and the activity manual I never added in any of the "extras" found in the TM. Most of the suggestions that I can remember were either group activities or researching some aspect of a culture. We did the course two years ago. I will warn you that it felt like a "fact cram". That really bothered me and I do not plan on using it with my ds. Maybe someone who has the TM can chime in but that is what I remember. HTH
  18. :iagree: I went to several of her workshops and this was by far the best! I laughed and cried with her. She is amazing and an inspiration to me. I also want to say how awesome it was to meet so many of you Friday night! I came away from my time in Cincinnati refreshed and refocused. I heard so many things that I needed to hear from the speakers as well as the wonderful ladies on this board. Thanks Elizabeth for organizing Friday night! It was definately worth the 9 hour drive from PA!
  19. Well can you add me back to the list plus two more? The friends I am traveling with would love to meet you all!
  20. Unfortunately I won't be able to join you all Friday. I am going to make a few "hive" items to wear and hopefully will be able to meet some of you in the convention hall. Have a lovely time ladies!
  21. We will be there Thursday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Any time works for me. Just let me know when and where!
  22. We are coming out Thursday and staying until Saturday afternoon. Would love to meet up. This is our first year at the convention and we are so excited!
  23. Nw I am wondering about our choice in hotels..... Maybe we should re-book somewhere else and cancel this reservation.....
  24. Hi all, We are staying at the Millenium for the convention. Does anyone know if you need to pay for parking each day? Trying to get our ducks in a row as it is coming fast. Also does anyone know if there will be a WTM get-together? Thanks!
