  1. My DD is in 11th grade, currently trying to do Geometry.  I need something that is super simple and self-teaching.  I just barely made it through Geometry in school and we are both struggling!  Suggestions??

Her strong subjects are not in the math/science fields, so basically I am looking for something basic....enough to fill the square and give her what she needs for SAT/ACT.

She hated TT (did that through pre-algebra) and did OK with the Lial Algebra last year.

  2. We are in Iowa, so we have the option to dual enroll, which we have done for many years for choir and band.

This year, my dd was in the high school for choir and art (2 periods) and the school seemed "fine" with it. We are the first homeschoolers to do it, so they didn't quite seem to know what to do with us, but worked with us.

Next year, we are going a co-op on Mondays. I have 2 dds that only want to take Art. I spoke with the principal yesterday and he was kind of snotty with me. I asked him if it would be possible for the girls to miss Mondays (already cleared it with the Art teacher and will work with him to make up anything that they miss, but ususally my girls work so fast that it won't be a problem. Art teacher told me that!). Principal said that they give grades based on "time in the seats" and that both of my girls would be issued Fs. :(

Now, I have no intent of them trying to get a diploma from the public school. I just want them to have the exposure....is there anyway that a transcript "out there" somewhere might come back to haunt us? BOth girls plan to spend some time at community college and work on a teaching degree.

Am I not seeing something? I hate to make my dd's choose between co-op and art!

  3. I think you'd be fine. If you don't like the 3 new books, they're day 5 only, so you could easily skip them. They don't appear to be essential to the program.

If you don't like the notes being behind the schedule each week, you could pick up a used core. Cores D and E are VERY stable. My 2005 Core D IG is exactly the same books as 2011, except the poetry book.

Any chance you have an older Core E to compare? I am so torn...we really don't the funds to order another IG right now when I won't need it until Sept....but I really don't like SL LA either, so an increase in $$ if not of my list of fav things either. :(

We are using Core D (2010 version) now. Do I need to panic and try to get funds together to order E before the switch? Would using an older E be OK? I usually don't buy the individual books from SL anyway...

  4. That happens. :grouphug:

Sometimes it is just hard to get a good grasp on everyone's needs at once (usually in my head or in notebook). Usually goes better once you are actually doing it. :)

Let us know what you end up using/liking. :D

Thanks for your help! I see you have a housefull too :)

I think alot of it has to do with 3 of my kiddos being involved in spots/art/choir in the school, so I am running ALOT. They are being great about getting academics done, but I am afraid my littles will get set aside....that's why I really feel like I need a set curriculum that I can check off...and KNOW that it got done.

Infants and teenagers in the same house *shakes head*

  5. We are enjoying morestarfall.com It does cost. Under 30.00 for year I think.

MFW K has no math at all?

I bought used, thinking the Math was included...got it, stashed it away...and just pulled it out to look at it. It's not there :( I'm sure I misunderstood what I was buying.

It has to be free. I can't spend anything right now. Dh has been unemployed since Jan and things are tough. :)

  6. For us it wouldn't be cheaper because we'd have to purchase another vehicle to transport the kids to and from school as I would be opposed to the school bus! Plus in order for our ds to go to public school preschool or kindergarten is across our town and there is no bus option for him...so it's unlikely cheaper for us.

I too am frugal with spending when it comes to curriculum. Rarely do I buy brand new, I buy used and use the library alot! However we still spend money on food for snacks and lunches as well as all the project supplies and the fee's for our academy per child. We still spend more than my sister does on BOTH her kids in the public school system...But they have 2 cars making it do-able and she isn't opposed to the bus.

And frankly due to the economy I'd rather CUT out buying certain foods and grow them instead of thinking it's better for the kids to go to public school. I'd also cut out TV and any other LUXURIES before putting my kids in the public school. Also I use to have a very successful Etsy shop before ds was born and made a pretty decent monthly income from it and I'd 100% take that on full force before going outside the home and putting my kids in school.

Sorry I rambling but I'm just not a person that will jump on the first option, I like to outweigh my options and make a decisions from many choices. I guess you could say I'm a multiple choice gal! :D

Quite frankly, we have already done that. DH went back to school 2 years ago in a field that was BOOMING. Since then, it has slowed down and him finding a job after graduation has taken MUCH longer than we expected. We have cut everything that I know to cut.

I also have had successful on-line things in the past, but it seems now that noone is buying. :( Just another sign of the times, I suppose.

  7. Your husband would also be picking up half the housework and grocery shopping duties... right?

Also, what about before/after school care, if you are working 9-5?

I would fly the idea of a part time, local job by my husband first and try to continue HSing - i.e. weekends and the occasional weeknight. You could pull in a little more money without incurring any additional costs (assuming you aren't working somewhere that would involve buying a fancy new wardrobe).

Um..no. But my bigger girls would. :(

  8. Hope these help! ;) "Honey, if we continue to home school, we will be able to...

    1. ...save money on meals through frugal grocery shopping, stocking, planning, cooking & baking."
    2. ...save money on school fees, school clothes, gym uniforms, sneakers, school supplies, backpacks, school lunches, transportation & field trip fees, not to mention all those fund-raisers the schools expect us to support."
    3. ...save money on my work-related expenses, such as wardrobe, transportation, taxes taken out, lunches/meals out, and so on."
    4. ...save money on daycare, because our baby's care will be built right into our day."
    5. ...save money on our heating bill in the winter, because we'll all be together so we'll keep the house warm."

:lol::lol: How did you know? lol We are in IA, where it gets REALLY cold! :)

  9. My husband has always been really supportive of homeschooling, but with the economy the way it is, he is feeling the pinch and seems to be convinced that public school would be cheaper. He is thinking that putting the kids in school and me going back to work would make things better.

I am very frugal in homeschooling...usually only buy used, hand down, etc.

Anyone have any resources that would help me show him that it really would NOT be cheaper to have 7 kids in the school system and 1 in daycare?

I know that my high schooler is taking 2 classes in the local school and our fees were $70 just for those 2 classes!

  10. My dd hates math...has done TT up until now. She will be a Freshman next year and is not sure what kind of college she will need/want (not the engineer type for sure, lol).

I found LOF cheap and bought it for her for next year, but have some concerns about switching just because LOF is so different than any math I have ever seen.

    Thoughts?

  11. My patience is at an all time low...probably because I am due any day and beyond crabby.

My SN kid is also my most difficult personality wise. She just IS.

She is almost 10 and we have been working with holding our pencil correctly for a LONG time...she just can't seem to remember. So I bought some pencil grips...and she threw a FIT. Just one more way for me to signal her out from her siblings and be mean to her.:glare:

I'm done! Can I just let it go? How important is holding her pencil right???
