  1. We are just about to finish up Phonics Road 1. I started out watching the videos on Sunday night, but I foudn that I still wasn't remembering everything she told me to do/say. So, I just started watching them with my child. I would hold the remote and pause it when it was time for her to write the word herself. She would benefit from all the insight that Mrs. Beers had, her much better singing voice than me, and I didn't have to suffer through watching the video on Sunday night. My dd really enjoys the videos and it's kindof a nice break from me teaching all the time! This program has been one of our favorite curriculum we've used. We didn't start PR until my daughter was almost at the end of 1st grade because we didn't know about it yet. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to start my K son in it right away, or wait until closer to 1st grade. It's a rigorous program, but an EXCELLENT one. We're excited to move into PR2 in the next few weeks. Good luck!
  2. Thanks everyone. I do see the importance of this skill. It's not easy at first, though!
  3. I've just started Writing with Ease 2 with my daughter. One thing that is new is the narration on Day 4. I'm a little confused about which sentence I dictate to her. Do I dictate the exact same sentence she just generated or one of the "better" summaries the book gives you? Thanks!~ Nicole
  4. My 4 yr. old knows his letter sounds and is ready to learn to read. I'm planning on skipping to the short-vowel words in Ordinary Parents Guide (OPG) to start teaching him. My question is are any of you adding anything to the lessons in the book, like readers where he can actually practice what he's learning? Seems a little tedious to have all this learning w/o some books in his hands! I don't want him to not see the fruits of his labor! Suggestions?
  5. we had a very similar problem with mental math, but I realized that i was expecting her to do it too soon. She didn't have it in her mind concretely enough to even begin to do it mentally. The curric. was using seemed to rush into mental math and discourage counting. That was the wrong thing for my dd. I ditched the math prog I was using and am using a new one now where counting is not discouraged and it's like a breath of fresh air- for her and me! So, maybe just make sure she is firm enough in the concept first before asking her to do it mentally. Just my experience. Good luck!
  6. We had been using Right Start for 2 years (level A &B). At the end of B, she failed the assessment, cried at math time, and I dreaded it. I borrowed Math In Focus from a friend and it has completely turned math around for us. Today my daughter actually said "math is easy!" We are using the 1st grade one. I don't even look in the teacher's edition at this point b/c it's just as easy to teach from the textbook and workbook. I do know that it's terribly expensive, though. I'm going to use my friend's this year for Grade 1 and then switch to Math U See. I hope she'll still love math with Math U See!
  7. I just found this out and now i"m trying to comment all over the place, just so I can sell some curric!
  8. Hi! I am homeschooling a 2nd grader and using Heart of Dakota, Right Start Math (changing to Math U See) and the Phonics Road. I'm also doing Classical Conversations. I used Heart of Dakota last year, along with these other things, and loved it!!! But, sadly, this year I'm finding that I never get it all done and am constantly stressed! I'm wondering if I should just give up Heart of D and just let our history and science stem from Classical Conversations. Anyone else out there in a similar situation?
  9. I would use FIAR, no doubt. Using it now with my almost 4 yr. old and my almost 7 yr. old loves it, too! Don't bother with BFFIAR.
  10. Would you be interested in selling your PR level 1? Looking to buy!
