  1. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
  2. Prayers for wisdom, comfort, decision-making, healing, and a sense of God's presence. May the Lord have mercy.
  3. It was a weird week and I posted a short Weekly Report :)
  4. This Rough Magic is my very favorite Stewart. It's wonderful. Wildfires at Midnight is good too :)
  5. I finished Howard's End is on the Landing last night. A beautiful, luscious book about books and reading and how one is shaped by the books read. I absolutely loved it ... even the slower parts. I haven't read many of the authors Hill has -never heard of many of them- but she is so skillful I was able to relate and enjoy even though she doesn't love Jane Austen. 4 stars because it slumped a little in the middle section, but the beginning and ending are fantastic. Book Reviews 1. The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers 2. A To Z with C.S. Lewis by Louis A Markos 3. Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis 4. Perelandra by C.S. Lewis 5. The Magic Apple Tree by Susan Hill 6. Why Kill a Butler? by Georgette Heyer 7. When the Sirens Wailed by Noel Streatfield (Family Read Aloud) 8. Howard's End is on the Landing by Susan Hill
  6. Wordy Wednesday: "Mine to Scribble In" a passage from Howard's End is on the Landing by Susan Hill Wordless Wednesday: Art Class
  7. I liked a lot of things about The Core - although the first half of the book was too, um, confrontational for me. However, I would never do CC because it gives up too much time and control for me. I homeschool so I have that control and I would hate to leave home one day a week, every week, and not do the things I want to do. I also hated the way Bortins kept saying "Classical Educators do this or that." I've been reading Classical Ed books, websites, and other publications (starting with WTM) for 9+ years now, and I can tell you, there is nothing that all Classical Educators do. I wrote a book review on my blog in 2010 when I read it.
  8. I think she's a her :) I never read Ballet Shoes (although my oldest started it, said she liked it, and never finished it). I first hear of Streatfield in "You've Got Mail" when beleaguered Meg Ryan is in the Fox books answering a question. Anyway, Gillian (who posts on the Hive and has a blog Explorations in Learning) had this on her list for Narnia studies, so I found a used copy and am glad I did. If Ballet Shoes is of equal quality in writing, I can see why you enjoyed it! You wouldn't believe how many people have told me they didn't know Streatfield wrote anything other than the Shoes books, but her GoodReads page has a long list ... adult books too! :)
  9. Posted mine. I originally misnamed it as 2012. I haven't even written 2013 all this year. What was I thinking? [sigh]
  10. I'm sure I've mentioned that we're doing Narnia for school this year. As one of our related reads, we read aloud When the Sirens Wailed by Noel Streatfield. It's the story of a group of children who are evacuated during the war as the Pevensie children are in Narnia. This was a big hit and the children better understood what was going on. I'm just getting going in That Hideous Strength, but my ILL of Howard's End is on the Landing came in, so I'm going to read it first. I'm continuing to work through The Liberal Arts Tradition (very, very good) and The Narnian by Alan Jacobs (also quite excellent). It's bad when I get too many things going ... need a new Read Aloud though.
  11. MEP for all three kiddos. All of the worksheet and almost always all of the teaching guide.
  12. Wordless: Writing Stages ... R-girl doing copywork, N-boy doing written narration, M-girl doing dictation Wordy: After the Manner of Book-Lovers ... a quote :)
  13. OK, I love Mary Stewart's gothic romances, so I put The Winter Sea on hold at my library. Hold #2 upon return ...
  14. I read a Georgette Heyer mystery, Why Shoot a Butler?, that was a Kindle deal last week. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Back to Lewis. Really. Why Shoot a Butler? by Georgette Heyer
  15. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Praying.
  16. Spelling Power might be a good choice to keep from leveling up too quickly.
  17. This is listed as 3rd+, but my second grader did these last year and didn't have problems with the math until the very end of the book. Critical Thinking Company's Crypto Mind Benders: Classic Jokes. They are math heavy to solve a mind bender square then translate a crypto-quote style quote. I thought they were quite fun.
  18. Posted mine this morning before church, but we were on the way out the door ....
  19. I love my Brother multifunction (had to have copy) Mfc9330 I think. It makes beautiful printing and copies.
  20. Well, the sun is shining today and the snow looks pretty since I can stay inside :) It's supposed to snow all weekend, though. On the upside, I don't remember the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics being on my birthday before. I'm looking forward to watching them tonight! I   the Olympics and the Opening Ceremonies. (My husband, not so much on the Opening and Closing ceremonies) but tonight I get to watch with impunity :)
  21. If you want spoilers I can PM you. Let me know.
  22. Little Britches ends very sadly (my husband and I were trading paragraph by paragraph at the end so we could get it together) and there is some sad throughout. But, it was totally worth it. So many things to talk about ... It was 2 years ago that we read it and we still talk about ideas from it.
  23. Oops ... posting at the same time :) Wordy: No Moral Right at All ... this is from The Magic Apple Tree by Susan Hill and has to do with appropriating things from the past (houses in this case) and treating them properly when updating them. Something to think about as Classical Educators. Wordless: St George and The Dragon ... my son's drawing :)
