  1. Usually? I don't know.  Rebecca is 12 and in 7th and fully expects to participate this year.  Both girls are going as "sleepover girls," and we always TOT at a mall.  As long as they're dressed up, well-behaved, and careful of little kids, I don't see why I would stop them.

In the interest of full disclosure, we went TOT'ing the year after I graduated high school.  Very fun.  :D

  2. Sort of similar to missing the baby/toddler years...

When I had little kids, I freaked out about pretty much typical things.  Is my 3 year old "typical," or should I be concerned?  Will she EVER potty train?  When will my 4/5 year old learn letters/reading/manners?  Etc.

And I can say now, that my kids are 10 and 12, it's okay.  When they're 10, nobody will know if they learned to read at 4 or 6.  She will eventually potty train.  Your 3 year old sounds like mine used to be.

    Which is weird and nice.

So, for all the moms here who have gone beyond the 10 and 12 year old ages...

What would you say "don't freak out about" to moms of tweens or young teens?

  3. Just a couple weeks ago a homeschooling mom said in my hearing, "God's not going to care if they can add fractions." *sigh* This is true. There is no math test to get into heaven.

But I'm pretty sure God wants us, the parents, to provide as good an education to our children as we can. I'm sure he doesn't appreciate being used as an excuse to neglect school (and yes, this comment was in the context of neglecting school for a period of time for no real reason). If we're worried about what questions we might be asked in the afterlife, "What is 3/4 plus 1/6?" isn't going to be among them. But "Were you faithful in all your duties to the best of your abilities?" might be.

    Yes!!!  So very well said.

  4. Thanks for emphasizing the importance of food in homeschooling.  We are using SOTW 3 and just enjoyed the Swedish Apple Cake.  We've also had Wampanoag cornbread, Parkin, and the Indian "pudding." (Okay, the pudding wasn't a big hit.)

If you can eat something, the day is automatically better.  :D
