  1. Thank you. I was not aware of this. I haven't read a ton about this yet.
  2. IDK, you could go back and look at some pics from Ferguson and Baltimore. The "protesters' were alleged to have been unarmed, yet they managed to cause a TON of destruction.
  3. I agree with this. Has there been widespread property destruction? Have businesses or services for everyday people been disrupted? Have there been deaths or injuries? Is the nation on alert to watch out for them (i.e. are there widespread fears that the violence will spread)? (Seriously, if this has happened in this instance, please inform me and share links.) I think there is some hyperbole surrounding the use of "armed" and "unarmed." "Unarmed" nowadays seems to imply "harmless," yet we have seen that NOT to be so, especially in some recent highly publicized incidents. Unarmed people can still kill and cause a lot of destruction. People also seem to forget or not want to acknowledge that yes, gun ownership is legal, and just because someone has a firearm doesn't mean that they want to use it.
  4. I packed up a ton of sweaters and tops to send to ThredUp. I then tackled my Yarn Pile ruthlessly with a pair of scissors (I had a HUGE knotty mess in there too). I filled up the under-bed container with the yarn and discovered that I do have a floor over there! I need to go tackle my ill-advised novelty yarn collection and shop around for an acrylic makeup organizer to straighten up my dresser.
  5. I see you've already decided, but I did almost the same thing - I tried to use CLE and TT with my older daughter. CLE is SO much more advanced. Even a year ahead on TT wasn't enough. She was doing CLE 300 and the second half of TT 4, and she was constantly saying that she "already learned that" in the TT lessons. I ended up selling my TT.
  6. We've done the car-schooling too, although no violin! We have a 40 minute drive to the gym, so she's taken science, writing, grammar, reading... anything she still has to work on. It's entirely possible that we might need to take a few subjects even when we hit the road for meets this year.
  7. Yes! We have a bird feeder on the porch that's just outside my window. I usually hate any kind of noise when I'm trying to sleep, but I always smile when I hear the birds tweeting away.
  8. Foreign language would be awesome - Spanish or French, either one. I vote for less intensive. My oldest has 22+ hours of daytime practices in June-July, and something she could do afterward would be best.
  9. My girls are so low-maintenance it's crazy. Rebecca is meticulous, but everything must be practical for gymnastics, or it just isn't happening. She likes B&BW body wash, but almost never uses the body lotion and never uses the sprays. Sylvia is even lower maintenance, to the point where I have to force her to shower, threaten her with no computer time to get a good hair brushing in, and probably only wears deodorant 25% of the time.
  10. Fresh, clean sheets. When we're taking Rebecca to the gym and she starts to gather her things and move forward in her seat before we've even turned into the parking lot - and we're always early. Sylvia making custom ponies. Getting something from the library. When my Days of Praise devotional shows up in the mail.
  11. When the girls finish up in May, we get them Blizzards at Dairy Queen. At the start of a new school year, they do an "about me" type of page and we get donuts.
  12. Thanks for this post! We're headed to Orlando for a meet in early Feb. and I want the girls to see the ocean while we're down there.
  13. Praying for you guys. Saw the poor lil' bub on FB.
  14. I answered you in Gen. Ed. but it boils down to, I wouldn't make a 10 year old 4th grader take science tests. My 12 year old 7th grader just started taking science tests this year and she's doing pretty well. I also assign grades all the time without concrete "evidence." As homeschoolers, this is no problem. Nobody is as closely acquainted with what our kids do and don't know as homeschool parents!
  15. I wouldn't make a 10 year old 4th grader take science tests. My oldest is in 7th grade now, doing Apologia General Science - this is the first time she's had science with tests. I think her first or second one was rough, but she's doing really well now. I think 7th grade is a good time to start science tests. As far as assigning grades for subjects without concrete tests/projects - I do it all the time. Nobody knows our kids, what they've learned, how they've participated, better than we do. For schools, sure - one teacher can't know 30 kids that intricately. But we can know our kids. I have no problems assigning a grade without tests, papers, quizzes, etc. Don't worry about that part!
  16. The prices have really skyrocketed! I have 3 Neverfulls, but I most certainly did NOT pay the prices that are on the current website! I nearly keeled over!
  17. A Louis Vuitton MM Neverfull in Monogram Vernis, the deep, rich cherry color. This color:http://us.louisvuitton.com/eng-us/products/montana-monogram-vernis-007462 I don't think it has ever been made in Mono Vernis. :( OR a classic Chanel quilted bag. (RunningMom posted the same one) I mean, dream big, right?
  18. This is it: http://stores.ebay.com/blairtechnologygroup?_trksid=p2056016.l2563
  19. Hey, I have myself an athlete too! 7th grade competitive gymnast daughter. We started homeschooling for other reasons, but it's a definite benefit with the heavy training schedule (going 19 hours, 5 days a week, competitive season starts for real in 2 weeks all the way (hopefully) to regionals in April). I posted on the high school board because I'm already looking and planning ahead for NCAA requirements in high school. Her coach says she is a serious candidate for Div. I or II. Your daughter-athlete sounds a lot like mine, and I think many of those qualities are shared by other young competitive athletes. She's very responsible and does all her work well, although she can be a little distracted at times. We do have to take off for the summers though because she has daytime practices and her hours increase as well. I am definitely keeping strong academics as a high priority. I look at it as, we're not closing any doors. I'm always glad to see more athletic moms around!
  20. I should pop back in here. So far we're maybe 60 lessons into Algebra 1/2 (this isn't counting tests, so we're not total slackers!). Rebecca is doing extremely well and feels very confident. She loves Saxon and DIVE, and I've already bought Algebra 1 for next year! We are using the My Father's World lesson plans, so she does not do every problem in every lesson. I have read a lot on both sides of this, but she has outstanding grades on tests, so we're going with the MFW plans as assigned. At the slightest hint of trouble, I won't hesitate to change this.
  21. Sort of. I don't feel pressure about gifts for the girls. But it's just more of, I pick the gifts, I figure out where to buy them, I send DH here or there or order online myself, I plan the meal, I make the grocery list, I wrap the presents... it's just tiring sometimes.
  22. My ODD is loving Thinking Toolbox and Fallacy Detective!
  23. I'm looking for anyone's experiences with Notgrass' Uncle Sam and You. My girls are 5th and 7th grades; you can see the curriculum in the sig. We're doing MFW Exp.-1850 and I don't intend to change that. I was thinking of adding Uncle Sam and You to take advantage of us being in an election cycle. I was going to start the first half in January, break for summer (we have to, due to ODD's gym schedule), and pick up the second half when we start back in August. Is this going to be adding too much? My YDD is super capable and a quick worker, so she won't run out of time, but ODD is a bit slower and very busy at the gym (~19 hours a week starting in Jan.). Experiences? Suggestions? I've got it all in my cart at CBD and I'm close to pulling the trigger!
  24. I relate a lot to you, OP. I was decent at school - got A's pretty easily, honors classes, but I wasn't a super student or anything. I got a lot of 99th percentiles on standardized tests. I was one answer away from a perfect English SAT score! For all the good that did me, LOL. I did a few extracurriculars here and there, but my upbringing was not very good, so I never got really good at anything. So my older daughter is a competitive gymnast. But this is completely by accident. She was a very, very active baby/toddler/preschooler. There was a small, local gym near us and they had classes for 3 year olds, so why not sign her up? It seemed to fit her personality. And here we are. DH never got to be really good at anything either, so we're excited to do all we can to support Rebecca. Sylvia is Sylvia. She just likes being a kid right now. She is really interested in computer games, so I am trying to channel that and get her into a programming course. She's very bright (a little more academically inclined than Rebecca), so I throw a lot of books at her. Hopefully something will "click" and she'll have her "thing."
  25. Rebecca will be 13 in March. What about a small baking kit or cupcake decorating kit? We also bought her some cute spatulas and cupcake liners. She just did a gym holiday party - fuzzy blankets/socks and Starbucks gift cards always go fast.
