  1. A suggestion from what I learned the hard way:

If you are thinking about getting your DS and/or DH tested for Celiac Disease (the blood test or biopsy), do it before you go off gluten or you will not get a valid result. Our first doctor didn't mention this to us:angry:

I now know that I have two kids with Celiac Disease in my home. At first it was difficult but you do what you got to do. Hunt down some gluten-free soy sauce and enjoy some sushi. My kids would not believe that the baked items were meant to be eaten...what a waste of money. Think meat and potatoes and homemade rice dishes like stirfries and butter chicken. Gluten-free pasta is now a special treat. I am curious about zucchini pasta but haven't got there yet.

  2. Yes, there is a Canadian version called Come Sit By Me. I actually liked it better than FIAR. Can't now remember all the reasons why but I do remember the books we read were more interesting for all of us. I believe all the literature in it is authored by Canadians. I also liked how the stories were grouped into themes. Not sure how available the Come Sit By Me series and the stories are in the US but they are easy to buy in Canada.

  3. I read your original posting yesterday and felt compelled to respond today, just in case. Do you have a natural gas appliances in your house? If you do, please consider a natural gas leak detector (different from a carbon monoxide detector). I know that your doctor diagnosed it as seizures and this is often how people with natural gas poisoning are diagnosed. I am harping on this only because this is my experience this week. Today, I have no working oven as it is taken apart and there are pieces everywhere while the cause of the leak is found. But no more bad headaches, dizziness, etc.

  4. Derbygirl,

This is Wendy, the list owner of HSCS. I would love it if you would post the link to your blog over at the HSCS group! It's so cute to see actual kids doing the activities. I think it would be inspiring to other people. When we started the whole thing, I don't think there even was such a thing as blogging! Now everyone does it :) I'd love to see everyone's stuff! It's neat to see ideas put into action. Especially now that most of my kids have outgrown it.

    Hi Wendy,

It is nice to meet you. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the work you and the other moms have done for the HSCS site. Because of you, I have so many precious memories of my kids.

Of course I will share my blog with the HSCS site!

  5. Thanks for the thumbs up Sparrow (it is my first!). The suggestion to team up with another family is a great idea. Sadly, our friends are too muggle for that. Too be honest the first time, I saw my kids in the school uniforms, I had them move away from the front window (what would the neighbors think).

One thing I would change if I was just starting would be to design summer uniforms because the outfits are soooo hot.

If anyone wants to see what we have done over the years in Hogwarts Summer Correspondence School, you can see on my little blog rumpus.ca.

  6. The kids just got their invitations to participate via owl mail yesterday! Today they finished their applications.

This year the kids will be taking 7 courses.

Defense against the dark arts - How to use a compass

    Quillwork - Illuminated Letters

Muggle Studies - by guest lectures Mr and Mrs Weasley focusing on Egyptian cooking

Care of Magical Creatures - Shells

Wizarding Studies - Famous wizarding mysteries

Potions - Dancing mothballs and coal flowers

Also Gringlotts will be teaching the kids about money (both wizard and muggle) and will include a field trip to the credit union to open a back account.

  7. We all really enjoyed this series by Hillyer. His writing style is beautiful. The kids were thrilled to point out that he made a few mistakes such as man is the only animal to make art (youtube elephant painting). Not sure if you are aware but the books are public domain. We downloaded them off of Project Gutenburg if memory serves me correct. Warning, it is a huge beast to print out. If you have a Kindle you can download the file to it and save you the work and several trees.
