  1. In terms of the UC schools, one of the benefits of using a charter school is that they offer UC-approved a-g courses. Your dd could also satisfy those courses through community college courses, which is more efficient, as one semester = one year of high school credit. Here's a website with more info on the a-g requirements: http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/index.html We like the flexibility of doing our own thing so we decided against a charter. But for some of our friends, those a-g courses are worth the loss of some flexibility.
  2. How often does MM reach the 50% treshhold? I have a friend interested in MM, and she's curious what are the chances of her getting it for half-price.
  3. My kids save their work on google drive. They created hierarchical folders, organized by year and subject.
  4. We found that same book at our library bookshop for $1 a few years ago. My kids were so happy because they love Robert Sabuda's pop-ups. My personal favorite find is the whole My Book House set for $20.
  5. Optometrist: what do you want to be when you grow up? Dd: Happy! Loved it!
  6. BTW, just in case you didn't know, there's a pretty active SD home education yahoo group here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/SanDiegoHomeducation/info Oh, and a fabulous math circle for 5th graders and up (where RR will be teaching this weekend, actually): http://sdmathcircle.org/
  7. My kids started with Twelfth Night, and they found it hilarious. They love the movie version, as well. An uncle once gave them a bear that says "I love you" when its hand is pressed, and they named him Orsino :)
  8. I have girls so this list may reflect that :) when they were younger, Grimm's fairy tales Gombrich's little history of the world Horrible histories SOTW Ongoing: Les Miserables (because they like to debate whether Marius is a sympathetic character) Pride and Prejudice Anne of Green Gables Jane Eyre Chronicles of Narnia Twelfth Night As You Like It Julius Caesar Calvin & Hobbes (these are considered classics in our house:) )
  9. Saxon Math for my big-picture dd. I'd never seen my mathy, laid back dd so unhappy with math or any curriculum.
  10. AoPS HOE for my kinesthetic dd2 Teaching company Coursera
  11. Sebastian, may I ask what school has been accommodating? I've heard someone has had good luck with Serra Mesa High.
  12. I just wanted to commiserate with you. Along with the hormonal changes, there's also the change in their social lives, as many seem to leave homeschooling during middle school or high school. DD2 is so social, it's hard seeing her main group of friends "leave" her. We'll just have to work harder at making more opportunities for her to be with friends, I suppose. Yes, it is tiring. Hugs to you.
  13. I love these threads because they spur me on to plan for the next year. Here's what we have so far: Science: home brewed physics with Knex Education stuff Math: Geometry (Jacobs or aops), PPG Literature: ancient History: Human Odyssey Foreign languages: (her main love) So You Really Want to Lean French, Duolingo French, Irasshai and mirai 2 Art and piano: outsourced

  15. The Art and Craft of Problem Solving by Paul Zeitz (She fell in love with him after he guest-lectured at her math circle last year. I've never seen her act like a fangirl before that.) Walden Great Expectations
  16. Unfortunately, monitors aren't terribly accurate. The FDA only requires that 95% of results be +/-20% within true levels.
  17. We love board games here, as well. We usually get a couple a year as our family gift. Our current favorites are Agricola, Puerto Rico, and King of Tokyo. We also like Quarriors, which is like a deck-building game, but with dice. King of Tokyo is simple enough for young kids, as it doesn't require much reading. We've played it with my 6-yo niece. Wish you guys live closer. We've tried organizing game days but the kids we know think our games are too complicated.
  18. Here are some we like that are good for 2 players: Agricola King of Tokyo Dominion
  19. My dd13 learned to crochet in the last year and has made jewelry, dresses, sweaters, etc, since. Now, she'd like to learn to knit. Any recommendations for knitting needles for her? Maybe a set she can grow into? She's a beginner but gets into things passionately rather quickly. TIA!
  20. Max Lucado's books encouraged my faith when I was a teenager. The writing is very conversational, making it accessible and inspiring. Two titles that stood out for me were "And the Angels were Silent" and "He Still Moves Stones," and "When God Whispers Your Name." Hth
  21. Those snowflakes are pretty! Do you have a pattern for them?
  22. Programming (python) through Coursera. Dd had never done programming before, and she's really enjoying it.
