  1. Um, I almost didn't want to answer this because we've really been slacking in math. She has other activities that have been consuming her time and taken her out-of-town. Though she started multivariable in March, she's not even 1/4 of the way through. She got really busy with other things, then summer came...So I'm afraid we're the wrong people to ask how long the course will take. Fwiw, when she was working on it regularly, the time spent varied a bit. For the most part, she was spending about an 1.5-2hrs a day, watching one lecture, one recitation, and then doing the problems. This pace might have been a result of my complaining when she used to spend 6 hours on aops.
  2. She's taking this multivariable one now: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-02-multivariable-calculus-fall-2007/. She's not as effusive in her praise as with Jerison's class but she says she likes how organized it is. And she likes how he presents different ways to solve problems.
  3. Didn't use that particular one, but dd highly recommends Jerison's class. She often talks enthusiastically about how clear his lectures are. She also suggests his videos to her friends taking calculus in traditional school.
  4. Thank you so much for providing the link to his talk. I love what he said about giving kids free time.
  5. I learned to crochet as a kid, then taught myself to knit a few years ago. I tend to crochet for the spring and summer (toddler dresses, tops, etc), and then knit for winter accessories and sweaters.
  6. My family uses Elta MD and highly recommend it.
  7. If you're in San Diego county, Mt. Carmel High offers an extensive array of AP courses, and they're open to homeschoolers. Registration is online so very convenient, as well. You just need to email the contact person for a student ID. Info is on their website (would link but I'm on my phone).
  8. We do Omnibus 2 together with my 11 and 14yo. They are both avid readers so the younger one has no problem keeping up.
  9. I'm commiserating with you. Even AP testing service seems unable to help me. Best wishes to us! ETA: A little bit of good news. I was able to find a school for Calc BC.
  10. Just FYI, YNAB is currently 75% off on steam. You have to download Steam and run YNAB on it to get the activation key. Once you enter the key into YNAB, you can use it on its own. Thanks for recommending this program. I'm really liking the interface so far.
  11. Thank you! I was so focused on giving credits per semester, and I didn't know how I was going to explain that she didn't complete the course. Thanks for giving me an alternative. We have so much flexibility as homeschoolers. Her transcripts don't have to look like my public school one.
  12. Thanks for the reply regentrude. Uh oh is right. What a sad situation for all involved. After a little freak-out moment, we decided on EDx's AP physics courses in the spring. We'll just count her work this semester as practice:). The dilemma now is how we'll document it on her transcripts. If anyone has advice on this, I'm all ears. How do you deal with a course, interrupted?
  13. My poor dd. After I'd bungled the beginning of her school year by getting the wrong edition of the book, she'd finally hit a groove and was 60% through the class, and now it's off. She really enjoyed his lectures and had hoped to take AP Physics C- Mechanics in the spring. Anyone else affected by this? What is your next course of action? Any advice?
  14. How about this crochet hook set? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B2CCA6W/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1417099591&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40. They're smooth, and they have ergonomic and color/coded handles. They're my and my dd14's favorites. A selection of yarn from knitpicks, which is having a big sale right now, might be another idea.
  15. What a remarkable young lady! Great job! Oh, and I love your red sofa:-)
  16. Thanks for posting the recipe. I saw it last night, when it was too late to go out and get rolled oats. We substituted with steel cut oats soaked overnight, and it came out great! Thanks again for a delicious recipe.
  17. I appreciate you all taking the time to reply. Thank you so much. Dh emailed HR, and the response was, "Good question. Let us know what you find out." DH will be calling metlife again on Monday. Anybody switched to metlife, by chance?
  18. What was your experience? Did your new insurance cover the ongoing treatment? DH and I are trying to decide between 2 insurance plans, with the only difference being ortho coverage. However, our kids had already started treatment, and the ortho office said to check whether new insurance will cover continuing treatment . I called the insurance company to ask, and the call person wasn't sure and ultimately told me to have my husband ask HR at his new company. Dh will try to call again, hoping he'll get someone more knowledgable. In the meantime, I thought I'd ask here.
  19. Just to share our experience, my dd used AOPS Algebra through Precalc, and we didn't do any supplementing. She hasn't yet taken the SATs but she did take the SAT Math 2 and did quite well, despite running out of time and not finishing all the problems. I agree with Regentrude about prepping to get used to timed format because we apparently neglected to do that. :)
  20. Librivox for free audiobooks CNN student news MIT Open courseware Coursera Ellen Mchenry digital downloads Our county library app (to request and renew books) Google calendar and drive for sharing schedules and writing Duolingo YouTube for edutainment (like Pemberley Digital's Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Emma Approved, etc) Wow, I didn't even realize how digital our classroom was until you asked.
  21. Silverturtle's guide at CC seems comprehensive and well-regarded with regards to prepping for the SATs. It has a section on writing. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/955109-silverturtle-s-guide-to-sat-and-admissions-success.html
  22. I just had to share my excitement that after having called 3 area schools multiple times, I finally got a call back. The school is happy to register dd to take the PSAT on 10/15. I was getting discouraged last week so I thought maybe she would just skip it this year. Thankfully, a nice counselor called me back. Yay!
  23. Are you bothering to have him take the test this year, knowing it will change next year? Just curious. I suppose it could be good test-taking practice?
  24. We use YouTube for some documentaries and music appreciation, as well. Would you mind sharing some of your favorite channels?
  25. A student taking a-g courses could be from a private homeschool (filed PSA), yes. Some traditional high schoolers do concurrently enroll in cc, as well.
