  1. They don't seem to want non-US residents :-( We'll just keep playing anyway
  2. DS(4) recently grew out of the weight limit on his harness so now uses it as a seatbelt booster. He's just over 18kg which is the weight limit for the harness on his seat.
  3. My DS is a little younger than your DD and we've just started out on SOTW too. He remembers all of it. Even the random little bits of throw-away information that we read in the 'interesting fact' boxes in the books from the library. I'm not sure which one of our kids is 'normal' though... probably both ;)
  4. When I was nine I started nagging my mother to come into the public library to sign the papers for my card. I used to ride my bike down and go in and read but couldn't borrow because I had no card. I think it took until I was about 11 for her to go in and sign the papers. I don't ever remember her taking us to the library, but I took myself almost every day after school.
  5. I got one of those foam pads for camping at cut it up.
  6. Have you considered / ruled out a visual problem? Either acuity or processing? That could be complictating the copying side of things.
  7. Sorry, I Can't help with any more advice, but I just had to say I skimmed this title as "How do you get to eat a cat" and had a moment of WHAT? before I read it properly. I hope you can get him eating soon.
  8. Like others have said, roll of what comes off and let the washing machine take care of the rest. Our kids have food allergies so sometimes there's a LOT of "the rest" for the machine to take care of, and it does a fabulous job. I've never used disposable nappies but I remember reading on a packet once that you're supposed to take the poos out of them too.
  9. If you've got a writer then you're better to get extra now while they're cheap than wait and have to buy them at full price later. DS has gone through four books since January - three of them his own 'free' writing and one for copywork.
  10. here it's mummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummymummy in that particular tone of whine that can only end in sent to your room time. What I don't get is why, when it NEVER works to get what they want, do they keep doing is?? head/wall
  11. Whatever he finds sitting around ;) Variously he uses Miquon, Singapore (I have 2a/b, 3a/b and 4a/b sitting around), some old school math text books from the 70s/80s, Dreambox math and Aleks, Kahn Academy and I'm keen to get Life of Fred for him. We're still at the "he's young, follow his lead" stage, so it's all here and he picks and chooses what he's interested in.
  12. DS loves dance and has just started ballet. He is the only boy in his class which means he gets heaps of one on one attention for the 'boy' parts and he is always involved in dances that need a male part. He thinks it's great (likes to be noticed, lol!) His current teacher is male and DS idolises him.
  13. lol, sorry "trundler" or is it cart? and, um, trunk (that one's just weird... elephants have trunks, cars do not ;) ) Another cultural difference that has struck me in reading this thread - I've been reading about all these people who leave their car running and thinking WTF, why would you do that? Then finally clicked that it was to keep the air conditioner going. Most people don't have air con in their cars here, I don't.
  14. we're enjoying Grammarland. I'm considering Primary Language lessons too.
  15. I just use AAS but change things as we go along - so 'mom' is moved to the short 'u' list and bath/plant, etc we learn with the caveat: the way we say this it isn't a short a word, but if you were in North America it would be. DS often says the word in 'english' then in 'american' to spell it.
  16. In this particular situation he was in more danger staying in the shop. I was not able to move both him and the trolley with is baby sister in it, and he was in danger of bringing the trolley over on himself. He was also attempting to run off alone into the car park, and I was not able to hold both him and the trolley safely. I believe at that time it was the best choice I could make... obviously I weighed up my options and knew that it would only be for a minute or two, the weather was not such that he would be in danger for that short time, he was restrained in the car and could be seen the whole time. Hysteria over what *could* happen but almost certainly won't seems to control some people. I'm quite happy with the decision I made that day, and I do not believe it endangered him in any way. If these fears are real for you, I'm sure glad I live in a part of the world where they are not reality for me.
  17. The car and child were in plain sight the whole time. The child was strapped into his car seat and too busy screaming his head off at the injustice of the world to do anything else. Yes, a lot of things *could* happen. But they usually don't.
  18. But you don't know the full story - you're guessing it may have been for an extended period, but you don't know. I have done this with my own DS - we got to the checkout and he simply would not do as he was told (running off, taking things of shelves, screaming, arguing). He was warned and did not listen so I asked the checkout person to keep ringing things up and I'd be back shortly. I carried him out of the shop and locked him in the car (right in front of the shop) and went back in, paid and then went back out. My DS is an inveterate 'plot loser' and was screaming fit to wake the dead - I'm sure it sounded to all around like he was being murdered, but in reality, he was having a tantrum because he did not get his own way. He was in the car for no more than two minutes on his own (and I did exactly what you described too, opened the boot, put the groceries in then left him to it while I returned the trolley). He is well aware of the consequences of not doing as he's told, and there is no way I'm going to continue to give him attention for disobedience, but at the same time I didn't have the luxury of just leaving the groceries and going back later. He's better nowadays, but is still prone to extremely noisy melt downs when he doesn't get his own way - not helped by strangers trying to talk to him when I'm removing him from the situation.
  19. brown the meat then layer it with slices of lemon and onion. Pour over about two cups (total) of water and tomato ketchup, a little salt and pepper. In the pressure cooker for about 15 minutes or in the slow cooker for most of the day. nom nom nom
  20. I don't eat it, but the kids like it fresh popped with nothing on it. We have an air popper that they love being allowed to use and make their own.
  21. I use FLL and AAS but without following the script - I read it through myself and then talk about it with him. Or sometimes he reads it through and then explains it to me. We can do 5 or 6 lessons a day sometimes so it's very much a 'fast cycle' version, but I feel like I'm plugging any gaps as we go.
  22. I have a memory of being taken out to the airport to wait for the plane to come in - it never came (Erebus Disaster).
