  1. My dd has cd so we've been gf for two years now. I highly recommend "Baking Classics" by Annalise Roberts. Once you get the hang of it, gf baking/cooking isn't hard.

I have two of Annalise Roberts' books and use them all the time. She has a bread machine book--dh loves the bread.

If you plan to bake, be prepared to look for gluten-free flours in quantity. It is WAY too expensive to buy small bags at the grocery.

  2. I have two LG flat screen LED tvs and love both of them. One has a shiny screen and one has a mat screen which doesn't glare nearly as much. 120 hz is the minimum I would go for...one of mine is 240 hz, and I can really tell the difference. 1080 resolution is a must.

Plasma is a great choice but do be sure it's 1080 and not 720 resolution.

  3. Only two of these things ring a bell with me...

warsh--just drives me nuts and I grew up here. No r, no r, no r!

Pitch-in--I was surprised to learn this is a regional thing. We moved to Florida and I organized a...pitch-in...except everyone looked at me like I was from Mars. "What on earth are you talking about?," they said. Makes more sense to me than, say, covered dish dinner. Just how are we supposed to have dinner if the dishes are covered????? Just pitch those puppies in, and let's eat!

  4. We have two breakfast casseroles--overnight french toast and a crockpot sausage/egg dish.

For dinner, we are having ham and... I don't know what yet!

    Overnight French Toast

1 loaf of cinnamon swirl bread

3 cups of milk OR half & half (It’s better with half & half. It's only once a year; go for it!)

    2 tsp. vanilla

    6 eggs

    cinnamon sugar, butter, syrup

    Spray a 9 x 13 pan with PAM.

Beat 6 eggs; add milk and vanilla and whisk until foamy. Let it sit while you cut the bread up into cubes.

Spread the cubes in the bottom of your prepared pan. Pour the egg mixture over top. Gently toss with your hands until the bread is all moist. Cover with plastic and refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.

In the morning, uncover and bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

Serve with cinnamon sugar, butter, and/or syrup.

    Sausage and Egg Casserole recipe

    12 beaten eggs

    14 slices bread

    2 1/4 cups milk

2 1/2 cups grated Cheddar or Monterey jack cheese

1 pound sausage, cooked and drained

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon pepper

    2 teaspoons mustard, optional

    Serves 8-10.

Grease sides of crock pot (or spray with Pam). If desired, spread mustard on one side of the bread and cut bread into large squares. Make layers in the crock pot of bread, followed by sausage, followed by cheese, ending with a cheese layer.

Beat eggs, milk, salt, and pepper together. Pour over crock pot mixture, cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 12 hours.

(I add extra cheese…cause I like cheese. And no mustard for me…. I also sometimes substitute frozen hash brown potatoes for the bread.)

    Crock Pot Morning Casserole

1 bag (32 oz.) frozen hash brown potatoes

1 lb. of bacon (or sausage) diced, cooked and drained or 1 lb. cooked ham, cubed

    1 medium diced onion

    1 green bell pepper diced

1 1/2 C. shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese (I double this!)

    1 dozen eggs

    1 C. milk

    1 t. salt

1 t. pepper (more or less to taste)

  5. I do know what you mean. It's hard when relationships, even really good relationships, take a turn like that. I've had something similar with my bf--she's still homeschooling, but she changed support groups and took a part-time job. I see her rarely these days.

So, I feel for you. Time to forge some new bonds and relationships...and learn to savor this old friendship in a new way. She's still there!

  6. It would be a HUGE deal in my house if my son (he's almost 21 not 23) took off like that. It would be one thing if he had an apartment and was supporting himself. Then, yes, he's free to do whatever. If he's still living in your house, then the rules change. Adult does not =age. Adult = action.

That said, he's in what I like to call "the STUPID phase." It's that period when kids think they are adults because of their age, but their actions and decisions do not bear that out. Flying to another city at the last minute without notifying anyone qualifies as one of those decisions. House rules do not fly out the door when kids turn 21. He had an obligation to let you know BEFORE he left since he is a resident in YOUR home.

Parenting is much harder at this end. It was easier when the kids were 2.

  7. Don't do it!!!!! They lied to us about that difference. We got a "check", coupon thing for about $26. We didn't spend enough to get the difference I guess, even though I bought a laptop this summer, and 2 new tires. Anyhoo, haven't seen anything else from them, and nothing about the difference to make up the $50. We are going back to the reg membership.

Go in and talk to the folks at the Membership Desk. They should refund the $$.

  8. I hate that FedEx won't ring the bell. Would it really be so hard to ring the bell???

UPS, on the other hand, rings and runs. I usually make it to the door before he makes it to the truck--it's become a race. (at least for me) My guy is great, though. He tried twice yesterday to deliver something from Amazon that needed a signature and laughed today when I told him that once in a while they DO let me out of the house!

  9. Betty Crocker makes a couple of GF cake mixes..and they taste pretty much like regular cake. My dh was thrilled when I made one for our anniversary. At $4 plus per layer, not so cheap...but it's the easiest way to have a nice GF cake. (You can make good GF cake, but you'd need to mix several flours to do it. At this point, the Betty is probably your very good friend.)

  10. Our homeschool group "adopted" a public school classroom this year. I was amazed to learn that 1/4 of the kids is homeless in this school (which is not that far from my home). Something like 90% of the kids qualify for free or reduced lunch. Sad. The teacher requested dry erase markers, colored pencils, folders, paper clips, hand sanitizer and wipes to clean the desks.

It's not a project I would have ever thought of but I think it will be very interesting for our kids to put the package together and deliver it.

  11. I was actually able to choose a color with my last car purchase. I wasn't in a hurry and I knew what vehicle and features I wanted. I bought a nearly new car and waited until I got that had everything on my list. I knew I did NOT want white, beige, gold, silver, yellow or tan. All of our cars for the last 20 years have been one of those colors.

My van is RED and I love it!

  12. I get the impression that some people use these sales as a sort of money making scheme, buying cheap and resaling online for more than they paid....

True. I saw a lady at WalMart and Target (same lady) buying multiple sets of TV show dvds. I said something to her about having lots of relatives and she said that she was buying as many as she could to resell them and make a profit.

I wonder how many people came because they wanted a gift for someone and couldn't get it because of stuff like this.

  13. Shopped at Amazon for several things this week. Then, dd and I did the whole overnight thing! We were at Wal-Mart at 9:45 pm. Had to park a LONG way from the store. When the employees started taking the plastic wrap off the bins, mass chaos ensued...madness, just madness. We did get most of the items I wanted from there. Mysteriously, some of their specials evidently didn't come in. Stood in disorganized lines WAY too long to check out.

Arrived at Target around 12:30. They still had crowd control going into the store and for check out. Found the items I wanted easily.

Checked at another Wal-Mart to see if that one had the missing items-nope.

Then we took a Denny's break. (Tradition!)

Hit Penny's around 4, only to discover that they opened at 3. Got all the things on my list.

Stopped at Sam's to see if they still had the Transformers movie for ds but they were out. Sam's parking lot was a ghost town at 7 am.

Came home and slept a few hours. Woke up to grab Amazon's lightning deal on the Transformers movie.

    I must be nuts!

I don't think we'll do Black Friday again...at least we won't try to be at Wal-Mart at opening. Their lack of organization just killed the fun.

  14. I think I'd be more sympathetic if the problem was medical bills or something dire...but birthday parties??? I know that sounds grinchy but housing and food come before parties.

I'd enforce the lease and would send them a certified letter (both parties) letting them know that the lease is a legal agreement and you expect them to honor it. In the letter, I would request payment for whatever month(s) rent you are owed. If you let them out expecting the deposit to cover the rent and you have lots of repairs to make, then you may lose money. (I have friends whose rental was left in such bad shape that it cost them $10,000 plus just to make it livable again.)

Is there someone you know in the area who would be willing to check on the property for you and help you manage tenants?

  15. Here's the one I use.
