  1. :iagree: and plan to do this. I guess I'm still new at this homeschooling thing and still going through a paradigm shift in my thinking, I know I get there though. I know I'm glad I live in Ontario as far as homeschooling since it seems to be very easy to please the government here (at least that's the impression I get from others)
  2. September 23rd is my DD's birthday too!! I think that's a pretty good plan and I'll probably do something similar.
  3. What age did you (will you be) starting kindergarten? I think what throws me off is the here in Ontario we have Junior Kindergarten but I think it's more of an advanced preschool (others from Canada/Ontario please chime in). If we go by this DD will be 3 going on 4 which I think seems young for some of the kindergarten material I'm seeing. Then Senior Kindergarten she would be 4 going on 5 which is more age appropriate for the curric. that I'm seeing. So, I think I'm going to do a preschool year for the age she would be for JK and then do a regular kindergarten for SK. Does that sound right? When I hear kindergarten I think JK but I think I'm going to have to adjust my thinking to a year older. That's sound reasonable, right? ETA: The cut off date is December 31st so they go to JK the year they turn four and then SK the year they turn five. DD has a September birthday so I think that's why it seems so young.
  4. Try this site http://www.thesource4ym.com/games/default.aspx It has a lot of pretty good games.
  5. At our local pool a child under 10 cannot be in the pool without someone 14 years or older IN the pool with them, right beside them at all times AND they have 4 lifeguards. The pool really isn't all that big either. They enforce it too, constantly asking where a child's guardian is. I've seen fights break out over these rules but they still enforce. Yesterday, I saw a parent a 10 year old and 2 year old. The parent insisted that the 10 year old was more than capable but unless the parent was IN the pool they wouldn't allow it. She even said she would put her feet in the water and the 10 and 2 year olds would stay near her. Nope. Then she said she and the two year old would sit on the steps and the 10 year old would swim. They threatened to clear the pool if they even tried that. The mother was all nice about it and understood the rules but the lifeguard was on a power trip and kept berating her until she left.
  6. Sorry if this has been discussed before but I'm just wondering when to start either one. I'd like to start as early as possible for both but my question is when? And can I or should I start them at the same time. I want DD to learn french since we're in Canada.
  7. My mom says it and my 12 year old nephew says it. When my mom says I cringe but when my nephew says it I laugh. It sounds funny coming from a 12 year old boy. I can't say it, it won't come out of my mouth. Can't say hubby either.
  8. I think you did the right thing. She is being irresponsible. Maybe get her this http://www.daveramsey.com/store/prodgsg.html?ictid=lm1.pub.gsg
  9. Facebook does not allow users under 13. If she has a facebook account and is using it she is lying about her age and she 1) is violating their age restriction and 2) she is using false personal info. Both of which are against their terms of use http://www.facebook.com/terms.php You can report her to facebook and they WILL investigate and delete her account. You can do it anonymously http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=underage
  10. Thank you I needed this because I have an arsenal full of "facts" and you're right it's not necessary.
  11. I think this is what I'm going to do and I'm glad to hear that it worked out all the way through.
  12. Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I know that we are in for a wonderful adventure and I'm really excited about it. I really appreciate the advice from BTDTs as I only know one family that has homeschooled and it's not a common endeavour around here. Most people have been supportive so far and there's only one person that I'm really nervous about because she is very opinionated and very overbearing and I'm not and have a hard time standing up for myself with her and usually just agree with what she says so that I don't have to argue (I know that's not a good thing and I'm not usually like that, just with her, not sure why) She's also a public school teacher that promotes the public school system at any chance she gets so I'm trying to arm myself with info so that when she does find out I don't stand there dumbfounded.
  13. Well, I'm kind of partial to Claire :) and Payton Claire is really nice.
  14. Hello Everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I'm Pamela and I have a 2.5 year old daughter. We're strongly leaning toward homeschooling her and we are doing a lot research now so that we will have answers to questions others will ask and to build our confidence. One of my concerns are that she will hate it and hate me for it. This may be completely irrational but she's two and there's no way of telling what she will think later. Another thing is that she is introverted. It takes awhile for her to warm up. At home she talks non stop and is busy, busy, busy, but out in public she takes awhile to interact. Yesterday at the playground it took her an hour to get up and go play with some of the other kids. When she does, she's fine. She'll talk to them and play and even stand up for herself if need be. The problem is people only see the first few minutes and make a judgment based on that, which I hate. I was this way and I hated school because of it and I don't want her to feel the same way. Right now, she's an only child and I don't know when we will have another. Is there anyone homeschooling an only child. What are some of the struggles you feel you are dealing with because he/she is an only child. What are some the advantages? For Christians: What do you tell people that say that they should be in public school to a light? I guess that's all for now. If answers to these questions have been posted else where please point me in the right direction and I'll looked there. Thanks in advance.
