  1. My daughter was driving us up to the Manchester, NH area this morning, so I had a chance to look at the beautiful foliage and check on the progress of the I-93 road construction going on. I noticed a sign saying that they would be blasting between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The road winds through granite-layered terrain. Probably a stupid question, but could the granite blasting done today cause a shift that may have triggered the earthquake in Maine?
  2. My daughter is on FB with friends in NH and they say their cell phones are out.
  3. We are also in MA near the NH border. Felt it here, too.
  4. What an inspirational young woman! I enjoyed reading about her accomplishments, family, and deep faith. Thanks for the link, Margaret.:)
  5. I worked for an oral surgeon many years ago. There are a couple of reasons for this policy. Infection control is one and the other is that we are there to treat the patient, not the parent who passes out on the floor!
  6. I have been a dental hygienist for 36 years and have worked in public health and private practice. I cannot think of one office where a parent/guardian was not allowed into the treatment room with the child. During a new patient visit with a young child, I like to have a parent in the room (usually behind or beside the child and facing me) so that I can talk with him/her about the child's home care, etc. Usually at the next recare visit I'll see the child without the parent. If there is separation anxiety (can be just the child, just the parent, or both!), I'll leave the reception room door slightly ajar and speak a bit louder so the parent can hear and see what is going on. (Yes, I know about HIPAA regs.) From a dental professional's perspective, it is usually less stressful for everyone not to have the parent in the room during treatment.
  7. Very impressive achievements! Thanks for sharing. I hope to see her in the Olympics!
  8. Red is a great choice. I tried making the hat and scarf in stripes but it didn't work for me. I had some pink yarn left over, so I made the hat and scarf in pink for my oldest daughter!
  9. I just went over to Etsy and there is a snowman gift card holder selling for $3.99. If there is no fee to list your item, I'd go ahead and list it. :)
  10. I am going to give one to each of my children with a gift card inside. Also, I'm going to put little goodies like you mentioned (not the ipod case) inside and stick them in an Operation Christmas Child box. Another idea is to sew the front and back head pieces together to close, attach a thread loop to the back, and hang on a Chritmas tree. I may do this but stick a candy cane inside!
  11. I've made the same pattern but with a red scarf and hat, small black round buttons for eyes, and small, colorful buttons down the front. The "carrot" nose actually sticks out a bit (hard to see in the picture). They are pretty cute, but I think you could only get less than $5 if you were to sell them.
  12. Shamelessly bumping my own thread because I'm genuinely interested. :D Also, I thought this was a good article (from 2010) about Danny: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/the_bonus/12/08/danny.woodhead/index.html I hope he stays the same.
  13. Mandylubug, I like the quote of John "The Penguin" Bingham that you posted. :) I'll always consider myself a runner even though at age 56, I'm not as fast as I was when I ran the New York City Marathon at age 47. Age and speed are non-factors in my book. :001_cool:
  14. This is not what I was looking for but shows what is happening in Massachusetts: http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2011/11/20/brockton_high_school_installs_lobby_scanner_to_improve_security/ From the article: Both Mills and Thomas concede some visitors, including parents, are not thrilled with the security scans, believing LobbyGuard is an invasion of their privacy. But they said neither credit information nor criminal arrest records are included in the scan. “Keeping the schools safe is our number one thing,’’ Thomas said. “And that’s what we have to do.’’ What I'm searching for is something I read about the student IDs that they have to wear going through a scanner for attendance purposes, but I can't find that information yet. Again, from the article: Students and staff in all the schools wear IDs hanging on lanyards around their necks, so if someone is spotted in the halls without either form of identification it’s time to ask questions, officials said.
  15. I'm pretty sure it's done in Massachusetts. I remember reading about it. I'll look for a link.
  16. My youngest daughter is also graduating in May 2013. Your son's four years of high school look similar to my daughter's four years. My daughter is indecisive about next year's plan of action, so she is going to take classes at the local community college and work part-time while she considers her future. She is my "late-bloomer" and needs a bit more time to decide on a career than her older siblings. Once she figures out what she wants to do, there's no stopping her and she will be successful in whatever she pursues. She may be the least academic of the bunch (oldest daughter-MA in Counseling, son-BS in Electrical Engineering, and middle daughter-BS in Finance) but I think she is the smartest and will accomplish much. I'm very proud of her!
  17. I am not a big sports fan, but I do like to watch the New England Patriots because, well, almost everyone does here in New England! ;) Anyway, I have been especially interested in Danny Woodhead (#39, RB, 5'8" 200 lbs.) because not only was he homeschooled (until high school), but he is a hard-working player who does his job well and quietly without fanfare. I am also impressed with Tim Tebow's work ethic and charitable foundations. Who are some other homeschooled athletes and how are they living their lives now as adults?
  18. The Assignment Guide in the 1967 Teacher's Manual plans out a Minimum Course, Average Course, or Maximum Course. For example, Lesson 1 assignment is pp.4-5/1-19 odd for the Minimum Course, 5-25 odd for the Average Course, and for the Maximum Course 9-19 odd, 27, 30 plus 9-19 odd on page 9.
  19. Wow! I'm sorry to hear about the mixup with your order. I have ordered from the company for years and have never been charged for an out-of-stock item. I'm looking at one of my receipts from a few years ago and it was clearly marked *Items listed below are presently out of stock* and the approximate ship dates given. The item was not charged until sent. Their customer service is great. I'd give them a call and talk to someone personally about the matter.
  20. Yes! My dd28 sent the link to me a few weeks ago. Very cute!
  21. I love mine! Yes, it is huge and takes up a lot of precious space on a table or desk, but I have mine perched on top of a two-drawer filing cabinet right next to my desk. There is enough room to spin it around and it's an arm's-length away from me. Very convenient. It stores notebooks, paper, folders, index cards, rulers, pens, pencils, sticky notes, markers, graph paper, manila envelopes, and the list goes on! I bought one for my sister and she returned it to the store. It was too big for her. I have this organizer on my desk and love it for the smaller items: http://www.staples.com/Staples-10-Compartment-Rotating-Desk-Organizer-Black/product_806950?externalize=certona
