  1. We get that periodically with cardinals and blue jays; they fall in love with their reflection. Last year we had a cardinal that repeatedly flew into the side view mirrors and tinted windows on my husband's Ford Explorer. For at least 2 days he did this constantly; then we found him near death lying on the ground near the car, and he died later that day. He must've battered himself to death.
  2. I'd have been taken aback a bit at first, but then after thinking about it wouldn't really mind it so much. I usually give cash anyway, but it'll be good to know it's appreciated that I chose cash (vs. "Why couldn't she put a little thought into a 'real' gift?"). And truth be told, we did something similar when we got married. We didn't put it on the invitations, but we informed everyone (parents, wedding party, etc.) that if people ask, we were hoping for cash as we had just bought a house that needed a lot of renovation work. Now...if by telling us in advance what the gift will be used for, they intend not to send a thank you note after receipt of said gift, that's tacky.
  3. Oh, yeah, definitely then! Gosh, that's a half gallon of liquid gold. I wonder, if it's in a clear plastic container, if you couldn't put a hole in the bottom of the container, and take only the stuff from the bottom so you don't disturb the skanky bit at all?
  4. If it's REAL maple syrup I'd save it. If it were just Aunt Jemima $2 a bottle junk I'd be tempted to chuck it. I, too, have heard it's fine, though, to skim and use. I'd want to get rid of every little particle of mold though, just out of the gross factor.
  5. Huh...okay, well...looks like the camps are divided; I even see online there are differing opinions on the matter.
  6. It does. They don't stay frozen forever; if it's during a cold snap that doesn't thaw at all and no sun shines, they won't dry. But generally, even if they freeze at first, at different times the sun comes out and warms the clothes, the wind still blows, etc. It just takes longer but smells just as good! And the crunch goes away with a good firm shake - even with towels. And to me, the outdoor smell is worth any lack of softness I might wind up with!
  7. The ultrasonic cleaning device they use on me makes me want to climb out of the chair; it's not just a sound to me - it's a painful sensation in my ears. I've always been sensitive to certain frequencies of sound and can hear things like televisions with the sound muted (the traditional tube type), and burglar alarm systems in some stores.
  8. I hope that they get back to you soon, and I pray that they tell you it's nothing!
  9. We have a simple clothesline that stretches from our deck out to a tree at the edge of the woods. If there's no clothes on it, you wouldn't notice it was there at all, but...well, we're not all that concerned about people looking down on us for being practical. We also dry clothes on the expanding racks near our woodstove. We have this one (metal - the wooden ones don't last very long at all): http://www.amazon.com/Whitmor-Folding-Clothes-Drying-Chrome/dp/B0019FW864/ref=pd_sim_hg_29 And we have one of these. http://www.amazon.com/Polder-Deluxe-Standing-Clothes-Dryer/dp/B000050ASM/ref=sr_1_126?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1329418345&sr=1-126 This combination works really well for our family. We can fit a full load of laundry on each, and you learn quickly what type of clothes go at what position on each rack. Not only does hanging our clothes save us a bunch on propane and electricity, but in the winter, the clothes drying inside adds badly-needed humidity to the air.
  10. I got it done back in 2002 and it was $3700 for both eyes. My sister paid about the same around the same time. My Dad had his done in FL for $500/eye at the same time. Prices vary, get references...but I can say this; for the three of us, it was the single most life-changing, best physical self-improvement move we ever made. I hear the "horror stories" too, but I know lots of people who've had it done, and not one of them tells one of those stories. In fact, they're rare enough that the "horror stories" usually make the news! Some claim they've heard that you have to go back for "adjustments" periodically but again, I've never heard any first-hand accounts of that. Take a valium, sit back and git 'er done! So exciting...
  11. My book, which I linked above, specifically states the following: "Adding sugar to applesauce is optional. If the sugar is omitted in this recipe, the yield will be slightly reduced. However: lemon juice is not an optional addition. Lemon juice is added to help preserve the apples' natural color and to assure the acidity of the finished product, since different varieties and harvesting conditions can produce apples of lower acidity." And my version is the 2006 version. But whatever, I guess there are differing opinions. I'm sticking with Ball, though.
  12. Please don't just let the insurance lapse by not paying it; depending on the state, you might have a very hard time getting insurance in the future if you just let it lapse. Of course it's probably on the same policy as your other car, so you would not let it lapse for non payment anyway, but I just thought I'd mention that.
  13. I know, it's heartbreaking. Sadly, though...when it does go bad, things can go VERY bad. Botulism isn't just a bellyache. I'm sincerely, really sorry guys, I can't encourage that. I'm no pro but I'm acquainted with enough of them who have said they would never take a chance on botulism.
  14. Milovany, you must have an old book; by the modern standards, it needs lemon juice or a source of acid unless it's being pressure canned...
  15. Ladies, sincerely, for your safety, please get this book, or the Ball Blue Book if you're going to can. Botulism is a killer... http://www.amazon.com/Ball-Complete-Book-Home-Preserving/dp/0778801314/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329355821&sr=8-1 I take lots of chances (lol chicken on the counter, etc.) but not with canning.
  16. IF it's paid off, and you're just paying liability insurance on it, I'd keep it. Many times I've been grateful for an extra car. VERY grateful!
  17. If it's in jars please don't freeze it! And if you've canned it using the water bath method (at a hard boil completely covered with water for 20 minutes maintaining the boil), did you add a source of acidity (lemon juice, citric acid)? Or else it'd have to be pressure canned. If you didn't I'd pop the seals, repackage, and freeze it. If they're properly canned, keep in a cool dark place and it'll be good for years! Nothing better!
  18. I might be nuts, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary...that skin is extremely thin. Everyone I look at has circles under their eyes, as I look around my office, and I just looked at my 6 year old's school picture and he looks the same.
  19. My bagless ones always wound up clogging up and I had to take the bottom panel off and clean out the hose with a coat hanger.
  20. I'd like to mention that I didn't have any hallucinations while on valium. I just had an awesome sensation of NOT caring. Which worked out really well!
  21. Gah, who needs this aggravation! Praying and hoping it's resolved tout de suite!
  22. My husband had two crowns done recently and the gas worked for him. I'd still go with the valium. I wonder, if the dentist won't give it to you, would he still do the work if you get the prescription from your gp and show up at the dentist sedated? I don't get the whole no-drugs thing, sometimes lol. Why suffer?
  23. I must really live on the edge, I wouldn't have hesitated lol.
