  1. Editing because I really didn't answer OP's question. Output is a discussion, outlining a section, or a narration of some kind; it all depends on what kind of day or week we are having. We started out using the The Book of the Ancient World by Dorothy Mills, but my son and I both prefer our set of The Picturesque Tale of Progress by Olive Beaupre Miller, so we've decided to read it together. :) http://www.valerieslivinglibrary.com/ptp.htm
  2. Thanks, Ali! I tend to read 500+ page books when I can, and they definitely take me more than a week to read, so I always feel behind, but I don't really want to change my book reading style either. 13,000 to 15,000 pages seems reasonable to me. :)
  3. What would a reasonable page number goal, rather than a 52 book goal, look like for a year's worth of reading? (I really hate not meeting my goal. I tend to be a bit of a box checker that way.)
  4. Broccoli and wild rice casserole from Pioneer Woman, but we're actually having it on Tuesday or Wednesday.
  5. I'm still reading and listening to The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I am really enjoying it. It's one of those books that I want to keep reading because I want to know what happens, but which I try not to gulp down because I know I will want more when it is done.
  6. My step-daughters are older than you girls, and oldest son isn't all that much younger than you! (Now I officially feel old!)
  7. We found out that chlorine bleach worked wonders on my son's skin when he was little and we were using a hotel swimming pool. I would say that bleach in his bath water was probably a little less than that particular pool. I can see that it might eventually dry and lighten your hair (the same as pool water will), but I wouldn't be any more concerned about using bleach in bath water than I would be about going to a pool a couple of times a week. (And when I say "bleach bath," I mean adding a small (1/4 to 1/3 cup to a half full bath tub) amount to a regular bath tub full of water.) :)
  8. Bleach baths. Seriously, the best thing to help my son's eczema.
  9. 66 to 68 during the day (usually 66, but I'll turn it up a bit if I get too chilled.) 64/65 at night.
  10. I'm so sorry! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Congratulations on the new baby. Have you had your iron checked? That might account for the severe exhaustion. Unfortunately I can relate to coughing and bladder control problems. It's the pits, but buy yourself some pads for bladder issues to help you not feel so helpless. I hope you get to feeling better soon, and maybe you need the rest for both you and your new little one.
  11. I'm reading and listening to The Historian. (Thank you to all of you who recommended it!) I'm still re-reading The Secret History. And jumping into Paul Johnson's A History of the American People to read it along with my 16 yo son. I'm also reading Volume 1 of Picturesque Tale of Progress with my youngest.
  12. How do you not hate The Little Friend? I guess it wasn't so much that I hated it, as it made me so blasted angry that I never wanted to read anything Donna Tartt wrote ever again. (As you can tell, I got over that part of being mad.) Did you appreciate the writing? Did you feel she wrapped up the story line? (And if so, could you show me where?) Just curious, and no worries if you don't have the time or don't feel like answering. :)
  13. But Boris went to the shop looking for Theo first. That's the part I don't understand. I can buy the rest of it, but I can't figure out any reason why Boris would have gone to the shop looking for Theo. (Or am I mistaken that the guy asking for Theo at the antique shop was Boris?)
  14. Autobiographical....maybe! I too was SO angry after reading The Little Friend that I still leave reviews anywhere I can about how much I hated that book. Another spoiler alert.... But if you are going to write a murder mystery that is classified as fiction, you had better solve it or at least write a MUCH shorter book! I didn't think I would ever read another one of her books after that, but I couldn't resist the urge to see which way it would go for me if I read this last one. I'm not sorry I read it, but want to hear what other people like and didn't like about it and her other books too.
  15. Spoiler Alert for The Goldfinch!!!!!!!!!! What was the deal with Boris coming and telling Theo about stealing the painting??? Why would he do that? I'm not sure it even felt right that Boris stole it, but if he did WHY would he come to Theo after all those years to tell him? I just am not sure I buy that.
  16. Please share your thoughts and opinions and spoilers and plot hole fillers about her books here! Please! I've read all three of her books. Loved the first one, HATED the second one, and have mixed feelings about the third one. Does anyone else have a problem with Boris in The Goldfinch? Can someone fill what I feel is a giant plot hole for me? I'm re-reading The Secret History, and enjoying it, but not remembering much from my first reading. Anyone else HATE her second book?
  17. Hmmm, not sure if it was a quiet or busy week here. It was a migraine week, and that means lots of meds and very little brain or memory activity. I did finish The Purity of Vengeance by Jussi Adler-Olsen. It was okay. I like Carl, Rose, and Assad, so even if the plot leaves me feeling kind of meh, I enjoy the characters and their interaction with each other. I pulled out The Secret History by Donna Tartt last night. (And thanks to librarything.com I was actually able to find it!) It's a re-read for me, but I haven't read it in well over 10 years, so I'm curious how I'll feel about it this time around. (Did I mention that my daughter is a classical philology major?)
  18. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: There in is the rub. Wanting to believe them even if they did something wrong, but still wondering if they are even telling you the truth. :cursing:
  19. I had it on my ipod (audio book), my Kindle, and as a brand new HB. It is good; it gets long because it IS long, but if you are going to read it, now is as good a time as any, right? I do love how her characters become real to me.
  20. Wishing you a better week this week!
