  1. Has anyone here read A Wild Sheep Chase? If so, do you have a recommendation for which book of Murakami's to read next? I also started: Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan The Book of Chameleons by José Eduardo Agualusa A History of the American People by Paul Johnson The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny The Maze Runner by James Dashner
  2. I read A Wild Sheep Chase this week. It's my first Murakami book, and I am considering doing another one, but can't decide which one to try next.
  3. We did get the recliner for our son, but no ice machine. They didn't even send him home with a cold pack, so I bought 2 or 3 of them to rotate. Ds was on meds the first week and then went to ibuprofen for pain. The doc has kept in in a sling for 6 weeks so far, but he's an 18 yo guy and my wild child too. (We called him Bam Bam when he was little.) Ds had both anterior and posterior tears repaired, so YMMV. Ds actually slept better on the couch with pillows the first couple of days, but he's preferred the recliner since then. My best advice is to keep on top of the pain meds, so you aren't trying to play catch up with the pain.
  4. We do the CAT complete battery. We are required to test annually, We can usually use the scores for good student discounts with our auto insurance company. Our high school students also take the ACT each spring, mostly for practice.
  5. I finished A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny (pretty good), and ordered A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami but haven't started it yet. I'm finishing up Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler. It's been very good as an audible book too! (I go back and forth from listening to reading, especially this week as we've all caught something and it's been difficult to keep my eyes focused for long periods of time.) I like lists better so here's the list: 2015 Read 1. A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny - pretty good Reading: Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler and A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami Precis Writing for American Schools by Samuel Thurber
  6. My 2 daughters and I all fight this problem. My older daughter's friend "fixed" her nape of the neck hair tangles by getting that back layer shaved off. The only time it shows is if she has her hair up. I haven't resorted to that yet, but am still considering it, especially on really bad days. Maybe a silk neck scarf would help? It's the friction between her clothes and her hair that is probably causing all the matting.
  7. Is there some place special to both of you? It sounds like you would rather not travel too far and stay at a MUCH nicer place and eat at an EXCELLENT restaurant. (Or maybe that's just me projecting what I would definitely want.) I hope you can find a compromise, but after 30 years...celebrating your anniversary ought to make you both happy (at least in my world it should).
  8. I use Goodreads to keep track of my reading, but Librarything to keep track of all the books in the house. :)
  9. Sometimes I need a good cry. Sometimes I need to feel that my life isn't as messed up as it could be. Sometimes I want to live through someone else's angst, so I can avoid it in my real life.
  10. I finished I Am Livia and enjoyed it very much as well! :) I also finished A Fatal Grace and The Cruelest Month both by Louise Penny. (I am really enjoying this series!)
  11. I finished A Fistful of Charms the other day. Jenks is awesome! The rest of the book...not so much. I started Lavinia and am enjoying it so far.
  12. The Flavia de Luce books! (Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is the first one.) I also REALLY enjoyed Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. (If you like Dracula/vampire stories) And if you haven't read/listened to the original Dracula be prepared to be surprised by what a truly good book it is. My newest pick in murder mystery books is Still Life by Louise Penny.
  13. I am not a Hobbit fan either, but I really enjoyed all three of the LOTR books. And don't get me started on Peter Jackson taking ONE (relatively short) book (The Hobbit) and turning it into THREE extraordinarily LONG movies.
  14. Lisa, Just checking in to see how your son is doing! My son sees his doctor on Wednesday morning, so we'll see what the doctor has to say then.
  15. I finished: Blood Price by Tanya Huff - okay, but not great and Still Life by Louise Penny - very good (It reminds me a lot of where I live, and I may have fallen in love with Chief Inspector Gamanche.)
  16. I love Tana French! And I think all her audible books are excellent! Enjoy!
  17. Ds had shoulder surgery last Thursday. The doctor found and repaired 2 tears. The MRI had only found one. Ds is in a sling for 6 weeks and starts PT today. He took Oxycodone for the first few days and is taking mostly ibuprofen now. (I set my alarm and got up every 4-6 hours for the first few nights to make sure he took his pain meds on schedule.) He also kept ice on it a lot for the first few days. email me if you want to chat: (remove the spaces) mmtrostle @ gmail. com
  18. Happy Birthday Week wishes, Amy!!!
  19. No, not R probably PG. I can only think of one scene that MIGHT be considered PG-13. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Dracula too! If you liked Dracula, I think you will enjoy The Historian too. (I thought The Historian was excellent.)
  20. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald Zelda Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Wartime Sarajevo The Zero GameZel I haven't read any of these, but they all looked interesting when they came up at Goodreads. :)I' I finished The Historian. I'm sad to see it end. Thank you again to all of you who recommended it! I started listening to A Fistful of Charms again last night, and I have several new Dracula/vampire books to start soon. My 18 yo son had shoulder surgery last Thursday, so I'm mostly playing nurse, and am stressed and not getting enough sleep, but hope to be able to spend some time reading here soon.
  21. I like vodka drinks as well. Bloody Mary's are good because they usually have extra stuff in them (celery, olives, pickle), so I can have a mini-meal with my drink. I also do cranberry juice and vodka. I tend to stay away from oj and grapefruit juice as the acid with the alcohol gets to my stomach. You could try an amaretto sour. I like mine on the rocks, but some people prefer them blended. Amaretto is a sweet, almond-flavoured, Italian liqueur. Enjoy your evening!
  22. Is Ubik appropriate for a 16 yo boy? He really likes Inception.
  23. Still reading The Historian and The Secret History. I have put a bunch of new stuff on my Kindle, but haven't really looked at any of it yet.
