  1. Everyone in our house prefers the book by Dorothy Mills, but I tend to have them read it when they are in the 12-15 yo range.
  2. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/loan-versus-lend http://grammarist.com/usage/lend-loan/ Thank you for enlightening me. (See, this is what I get for correcting someone else's usage.) And, for the record, I am fine with either lend or loan, but not the word "borrow" in place of either of them.
  3. "Borrow" it to you. No, you will LOAN it to me. One lady said that she and her husband had gone to the bank to get a loan, but that her husband's parents had borrowed it to them instead. Definitely, makes me nuts. I wanted to ask her....why did you go to the bank? "To get a LOAN, right?" Ugh.
  4. Listening to/reading Orlando and Night and Day by Virginia Woolf and Paul Johnson's A History of the American People. I started and finished Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny. (I don't always care a whole lot about the murder mystery, but I do love her characters.) My girls are over in London for the week. They saved their summer job money and are there for their spring break. The boys and I are still doing school because of an online class. 14. Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny - good/very good (not a great mystery, but I love her stories) 13. The Mysterious Death of Miss Jane Austen by Lindsay Ashford - eh, okay, but not great 12. The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny - I love Gamanche (and Ruth and Gabri and Beauvoir) 11. Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor - okay, much better than the other Jane knock-off, but not great 10. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - excellent 09. Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan - good, great characters 08. Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James - awful, wish I hadn't bothered to read it 07. Plea of Insanity by Jilliane Hoffman - pretty good, but not great 06. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - good 05. Emma by Jane Austen - very good 04. First Grave on the Right - meh (great narrator, lots of potential, but mostly disappointing) 03. A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami - weird but good 02. Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler - pretty good 01. A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny - pretty good
  5. Your student will eventually do all 41 problems, or close to, because they are assigned one at a time in later chapters. IOW, you will do other problem sets and add in one of the word problems from 7-10 each day. HTH
  6. https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=4&category=6704 American Language Series is my favorite reader & workbook set for phonics. It is the ONE thing that I used with ALL six of my children.
  7. I bought it one of two places: either as a set (used) online or from Pearson directly. (I had to fill out a form verifying I was a home educating parent.) I do usually justify my more expensive purchases because I will re-use them with 6 children.
  8. The TE has this set broken down into 4-5 days doing 3 to 4 problems daily. Chalkboard Examples: #1 Day 2: #11 Day 3: #23 Day 4: #33 Day 1: two to four problems from 2-10 Day 2: #13, 15, 17 or 14, 16, 18 Day 3: #19, 25, 27 or 20, 26, 28 Day 4: #29, 31, 35 or 30, 32, 34 Day 5: Exercise 7- 11 - selected problems in preparation for test. My children were thrilled when I finally got a TE as their assignments dropped significantly.
  9. Yep! Right there with you! (I will be stalking ALL your book choices from now on.) :thumbup1:
  10. I really disliked Gone Girl, but not so much because of the writing as the story itself. I did cave and buy The Girl on the Train on Kindle, but I haven't started it yet.
  11. I'm so sorry about the migraine. I am hoping to see my doctor in April to try something new to deal with mine. And please share how you do with To the Lighthouse, I keep thinking if I can just find the "right" Virginia Woolf book that THEN I might appreciate her works. (maybe not?)
  12. I am still working on Paul Johnson's A History of the American People and The Mysterious Death of Miss Jane Austen and a couple of others. I started The Brutal Telling on a whim and read through it in about 2 days. I'm trying to keep from buying the next one, but I have a feeling that I might only last until tomorrow! 12. The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny - I love Gamanche (and Ruth and Gabri and Beauvoir) 11. Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor - okay, much better than the other Jane knock-off, but not great 10. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - excellent 09. 13. We are using the The History of the United States, but we have the dvd set. We like it. There are 2 or 3 different professors. It's been a good companion to Paul Johnson's A History of the American People. (And I highly recommend it on audio book too!)
  14. The Once and Future King is wonderful as an audio book! My 16 yo son and my 13 yo son both laugh out loud and smile and shake their heads at the story so much while listening to the book, that I have to recommend trying it that way. (edited because I cannot listen to an audio book and write a coherent sentence at the same time!)
  15. And just to be the dissenting opinion, I tried Progressive lenses and hated them. I could not get used to them. I wear my glasses from the time I get up until I go to bed. I tried for about 2 to 3 weeks and just could not get adjusted. I will need bifocals of some kind at my next eye appointment, but I don't really want the lined ones either. (vanity issue!) The problem with the Progressives for me is that I use my peripheral vision instead of turning my head, and I hear that is a big no-no. I hope you are one of the lucky ones and adjust easily!
  16. I have been bingeing/binging on Jane Austen knock-offs and am not impressed so far. I just started The Mysterious Death of Miss Jane Austen by Lindsay Ashford and am liking this one better so far. I also started The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers and Night and Day by Virginia Woolf. Rumor has it that Night and Day is not very like most of Virginia Woolf's other works, so maybe I have a shot at (maybe) liking this one. Finishing The Count of Monte Cristo was huge! (pun intended! groan if you'd like.) It looks like I started it (again) in 2012. It is excellent! The trouble with excellent literature is that I now have very little patience to wade through not so great literature. 11. James - awful, wish I hadn't bothered to read it 07. 17. Thank you! Dh and dd can't seem to understand why I am in panic-mode, but apparently it is a reasonable response to where we are in this process. (Did I mention how much I hate events. -- And the thought of having a party at my house makes me physically ill.) I just want dd to be happy and to have happy memories of the day!
  18. I've never done this!!!! Do I just order the invitations (sort of generic) from the website linked through the college. Should I get personalized ones? (I would think so, but again...never done this.) How far in advance do we need to get them to people? Do we send to everyone or only people we think will actually come to the event? Can I say how much I hate events??? I am very proud of my daughter, but I do not enjoy these kind of things. She would also like the family and guests to go to dinner together. How far in advance do I need to book hotel and restaurant accommodations? Someone want to hold my hand and tell me step by step how to get this done? Please.
  19. MCT stuff is great though expensive. The Rod and Staff 5th grade Engllish program is a great place for you to start. If you have younger children, you could start with the 3rd grade English instead. You don't have to learn it all today just try and get one step ahead of your children. :)
  20. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  21. My youngest is 13 and while it doesn't hurt anymore, it still makes me sad now and then. I can't tell you how to make it not hurt, but I can tell you that letting bitterness take hold will do nothing good for you, your marriage, or your family.
  22. I'm finding that Goodreads.com is working the best for me this year. It's an easy place to build shelves and mark each book/author/series I'm working on.
  23. I prefer the mystery authors, but am almost disappointed that we won't all be trudging through Virginia Woolf together, as it is the only way I expected to make myself read another of her works.
