  1. I think Humble ISD will let you do things. Friends have talked about one class they are taking in high school but I'm not sure how it works. Also I know one women made to send her daughter back to public school so she could do band because of UIL rules. Jenn
  2. So so sorry:grouphug:!! May God comfort you, your family and her family at this time!!! Jenn
  3. Has anyone let their kids do the Let's Go Learn reading assessment that Sonlight has as a placement test? If so, do you feel it's correct? DS scored 8th grade in some levels and below level in two others. I'm wondering how accurate it is. Thanks, Jennifer
  4. My little boy is a 3rd grader. He's working from 9:00-2:30 with about a 30 minute lunch break. We're using Calvert so it seems to be a full day’s work. My husband has the same concern. We're doing a lot of extra stuff. He's in homeschool chess club, swimming, karate and co-op one day a week. I had to get that accounting mind of his to understand the fact that our son was doing all of this after school.
  5. :grouphug: So sorry!!! My heart is breaking for our wonderful state! We praying for all of Texas!!
  6. Congrats!!! I will say there is a learning curve but you will get it. We're two weeks into our first year. We're still getting into the routine.
  7. I msicarried last January. It was about 5 weeks. I was late but didn't slow to test. My cousin got married that week and we moved some stuff. I had bad cramps and heavy, heavy bleeding. I stood in the motel shower with a lot of tissue coming out and terrible bleeding. It wasn't fun but I did make it through and was a bridesmaid two days later. Jenn
  8. My background is a 5th and 6th grade teacher. I gave grades and graded tough. I had a conversation today with a homeschooling mom. I said that DS made a 86 on a math test this morning. Her reaction was you give grades? I do this for many reasons .My plan maybe to put him back in public school at some point. We may want to send him to private school in middle school or high school. I also have an ex-husband and his family that at some point may cause trouble over home schooling. I agreed with DH to cross my T and dot my I’s when I told this one. Does anyone else grade their elementary grade students? Jenn
  9. We use Calvert. Ds usually take an hour to work through it. He also has math homework with multiplication facts nightly. Jenn
  10. This is our greatest fear is that he will not be successful if we decide to go back to public schools. Therefore this is my list 1. standardize testing - yearly 2. Texas teks test- It will be the 3rd grade test from 2009. 3. newsletter- This is a journal of how he's doing and what is being taught. I email it to my dh and make a copy for the notebook. 4. Grading- I give daily grades. I grade tough. 5. We use Calvert School with ATS. He gets tested and graded every 20 lessons. 6. We work with OT and speech therapist to improve weak areas. I think of it in terms of the business world. My Dh is accountable to his boss, the boards and the federal government. I can be that accountable for my ds's education. Jenn
  11. My ex has abandoned my son. He kicked us out with our clothes and a few toys. I had a car. I filled up the car and got $200 from the checking account and came back to Texas where my wonderful family is. My ex closed the accounts the next day. I spent almost all of the money on hotel and food. My dad paid me back for some stock I gave him. My ex informed me that he didn't want to be a daddy anymore. Ds were 5 and we had been married 10 years. He has major depression issues. He doesn’t think straight and is self-centered. He also mean! He has seen ds twice in the last year. Our happy ending came in the form of an accountant who is my best friend. We have been married over a year. I love our life now! Jenn
  12. We're using 3rd grade calvert. We have the full box and ATS. We were using saxon this summer and it was a lot easier for him. Actually it was to easy. We're enjoying calvert so far but it has been a jump. Jenn
  13. You got me thinking. Ds and I need a name for our school. Where is a good place to get bags and t-shirts made up? Do you wear them to events with other homeschoolers? Jenn
  14. Our first offical day was today. He rocked right through it. I loved hearing my teacher voice again but this time I was using it on my little boy.
  15. I'm about to pull my little boy out of public school. He was in a lab setting for speech last year. The school therapist wanted to write an IEP on him at the beginning of this school year. We are addressing the speech issues in a private setting. He is about 6 months from being done. Do I need to say anything about the speech issue and how it's being addressed in the withdraw letter? We are in the state of Texas. Thanks, Jennifer
