How do you determine reading level?
jayb842 replied to Runningmom80's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
I make a copy of a page from a book and put a check above each word he misses. Then I figure out his percentage. If 95% or higher he’s okay. If it's less than 95 % that where he needs work. I've done DORA. I like it. -
Looking for a complete program (cross-post)
jayb842 replied to Greta's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Calvert seems to get better and better as they go up in grade levels. We are using it for 3rd and will be for 4th. I plan on looking at the Virtual academy when ds hits 6th. Call the educational counselors if you have questions. They are so helpful. -
Online or Christian school? I'm over whelmed and failing
jayb842 replied to mumkins's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Have you looked at Calvert? It's planned for you. It has a check list for every day. My going off track 3rd grader does it in about 4-5 hours most days. It's a very complete curriculum. There is a 30% sale going on now. -
I'm setting goals for my 4th grader next year. My end goal is to have a student who can go any college he wants. We want well rounded child. What are your educational, life skills and extra curriculum goals for your 4th grader?

We are doing time attack but I'm watching to see what he is missing and them using flash cards to drill him what the game is working on. We are using m&m as a reward for correct answers. He started the game last week and is half way through. He does get frustrated if I'm not there to drill him before he plays.

Say your pregnant and your duh left you
jayb842 replied to momofkhm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Ex-Dh almost did this. He stayed 5 years and kicked us out penniless because he never wanted ds. It also was a planned pregnancy. We were married 4 years before ds was born. Our divorce was a huge blessing that I never dreamed would turn out so well. The amazing blessing was my awesome husband is now ds's dad. Honestly I wish my ex had left before ds was born. I think it would have been better for ds. The down side is being a single mom is tough but the Good Lord will see her through it. Go babysit one afternoon so she can shop or get her nails done. Personal recharge was a key for me. -

I throw up in labor. It had nothing to do with being scared just smelled food. My morning sickness triggers was by normal smells the dog, my ex-husband, candles or thoughts of being sick. -
Raising teens, holding my tongue worked!!

Thank you!! I think I know a mom that needs to hear this. My 11 year old dd is having a lot of issues with her mom. The mom needs to learn this one. We are working together to get dd's mouth under control. -
We learned them in 7th and 8th grade. I learned it and my honors class sister didn't! We were in the same class. I taught it to my 5th and 6th graders in Nebraska. I came back to Texas to teach 5th grade. I was told no grammar in the 5th grade and no writing either. You should just teach reading to pass the state test.

Ds is 9. He loves science and is gifted in this area. He needs a challenged in science. I'm thinking maybe a middle school program. He out preformed my top 5th grade students when I taught it public school when he was in 1st grade. Any one have thoughts on this?

When do you start a new school year?
jayb842 replied to manyblessings's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We finish in May. Then we'll start again in July. Lord willing we will finish 4th grade in March of 2013. That also depends to how much ds masters quickly. -
Exercise Thread 1/15 - 1/21
jayb842 replied to Hoggirl's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Sunday Elliptical 25 minutes Monday elliptical 25 minutes. I haven't done anything in while. Dh will be working a lot over the next month so I decided when he looks up again I want him to see a difference. I also watch the Houston marathon this weekend. A marathon is on my bucket list. -
I give Texas state to ds to insure that he could stay with or a head of ps kids. My one our goals to pass the state test. He has passed the reading already this year! I have not tried the math.

Ds had problem reading in 2nd grade last year in PS school. I have a few suggestions. 1. Get a strong phonics program. I used K and 1st Abeka. 2. Work on sight words. Sight words are like 80% of what we read. (Once we got the sight words ds took off.) 3. Handwriting- Have you thought about cursive? I started ds in cursive and his handwriting is a lot better in cursive than print.

It sounds like what we went through with DH. We went through all the heart test but they were fine. We also saw an ENT specialist. All the test were fine. After a process of elimination we figured out it was Anxiety. He takes a very small dose of Anxiety medication now. It has cleared the problem. I hope you figure it out!

Oh I'm with you! I'm getting the excuse I can 't think because of the rain! My armpit itches. Can I change shirts! School is not lasting until 6:00 tonight!

We don't live in Indiana but have experience with both the private setting and public school. Ds needed help in public school last year. He was put in a lab setting and was found with one sound problem. After nothing changing in his speech in the lab setting I took to a private clinic. He had five sounds they found as a problem and a problem with using conjunctions correctly. We have gone for a year and will be done in the next month. Our insurance covered most of it. If you can just get him evaluated in a private setting it may be worth it. It’s just my two cents.

Lord willing- Ds will graduate from our school. He'll do community college, local homeschool classes for math and science. I'll do English and history for high school. We may do an accredited program for high school too.

When are you starting back to school?
jayb842 replied to DawnM's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We'll start Tuesday? I'm ready to get back to normal. Now ds may not agree. -
I'm thinking ahead for next year. We will school year around and will be through by June 1 for the current year. We are currently doing Calvert and I like it most of the time but Calvert is being supplemented more and more. I'm currently using Saxon 3, R&S 3 along with Calvert. So if the Hive could create a 4th grade curriculum what would it be?

If you count school days, how many have you done?
jayb842 replied to Nakia's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We're on 70 and will be on 80 when we break. Our goal is to finish by June 1. Then a summer of camps, trips, reading and 4th grade math. -
My ds is turning 9 a few days before Christmas. I'm wanting to have a party for him. Dh says no party at the house. Our house is not big enough for all the kids. Plus we don't want to clean up the mess. It will be to cold for a park birthday. I want the kids to get to play and enjoy each other. Anyone have any cool birthday ideas?
