  1. Ds was very ready to come out of ps school. I was scared last year when I did it and so was Dh. Our solution was not to pull him out until the summer was over. We did our normal summer camps and stuff in the morning but we homeschooled in the afternoon. We were in a regular route and though nothing of it was time to pull him out. You might just give him a test run. Also try to plug him to other homeschool kids this summer.
  2. Ds is a homeschool 4th grader. Dd will be joining us from ps school. We will be repeating some science and maybe English from 10th grade. She'll be working through National Connection Academy. Currently my middle daughter will be in public school a few states away but we'll see what the summer bring.
  3. We should be finished by May 18 with school. We 'll do typing, handwriting, reading and math. He also doing a paper over the Smokey Mountains. We are going on vacation there. Then we take off first two weeks in June for family vacation. He has a basketball camp in the last part of June. He has a Lego mindstrom camp in the middle of July that is all day. The Vbs and a trip to my hometown in the last part of July. We work in the afternoon after camps. We have homeschool convention in early August. Then we start back Aug.13. Now the question is what do with step dd.We have her until June 31. I hope the last two weeks of June we can do a study skills course, algebra review, get one books out the way for English3. She will join us next year to homeschool.
  4. I just brought my ds home last year. He is the same age and about the same learning speed as your son. We use Calvert as our spine. What I love about it is planned out daily for you and i add on as needed to challenge and add depth. We also supplement with Saxon math. He will take a science and Latin classes next year from the co-op. My best advice is to take it one day at a time, relax and enjoy the journey. You will do awesome!
  5. Thank you for posting this. They are beautiful. How you know how many pages where in each book? I need to do this with ds's stuff.
  6. Hi, We will be pulling dd at the end of the school year from public school. She is miserable. I'm looking for a skill study program for her. She needs to learn to take notes, time management, effective reading skills and organization skills. Does anyone know of a program?
  7. Well my oldest step dd is almost impossible to get to do anything. She has no extra actives. My middle step dd refuses to stay home. She's in cheer, tumbling and girl scouts. She'll stay every weekend with a friend if her mom lets her. Ds is an active little boy. He's on swim team team 4 days a week. He's in the homeschool chess club, basketball ,fences and wants to play soccer next fall. He will be either joining the homeschool band or playing piano next fall too. This kid is taking an outside science and Latin class too. This summer he's on the swim team, in two Vacation bible schools, doing two Lego mind storm camps and a basketball camp. We're doing a major family vacation and a trip out to visit my family. Some where in the ds will start 4th grade math and read a few books. Yes, summer is gone before it starts.
  8. Ds has came miles since 2nd grade. He had a very tough start with the Divorce. We did three public schools in three years. He struggled in reading, spelling and handwriting. In second grade I after schooled him. I got him reading above level by the end of the year. I pulled him this year. He's reading 39 clues now. His handwriting is readable. He's retaining information over the last year. I started 4th grade math with him today. We haven't done very much place value since Aug. He remembered it. His spelling is better. He had private speech therapy and exited out. He had good friends. I'm so so blessed that we were able to do this. Now my oldest step dd will be joining us this next year. So the adventure will continue.
  9. Abeka has the same test for individual student purchase. We'll do it in May. Ds is in 3rd grade.
  10. I'm having a hysterctomy on April 18. I'm wondering how long did it take to get back to school work and house work? I'm hoping I can start back on school work in about week. We will have about 15 days of school left.
  11. I've ran Monday- Thursday. I'm running for about 20-25 minutes each day. I want to get up to 30 next week. My goal is to be in shape enough to feel comfortable throwing my name in the hat to run the Houston half marathon. Sign up is in June.
  12. I posted about a week ago that my step-dd is very miserable in high school. Her mom has agreed to let me homeschool her. We feel that she will do well with an online cyber school. We are looking at National Connection Academy next year. Has anyone worked with them or your state's connection academy? If so I have questions 1. How were the teachers? Could they help your kids if they get stuck? 2. Did there computer system stay up? I've read k-12 has issues with their system staying up. 3. Did your child have any issues with transferring credits? 4. Can parents see grades daily ? ( I want her mom to log and to be able to see them.) 4. Is there anything else anyone can tell that me would help?
  13. Thank you for responds. We are in Texas. We are looking for college prep. She's scheduled to take physics, algebra 2, English 3 and USA history next year. What happens if she's stuck and I am too? What programs provide support for things like Algebra 2? DD is young 10th grader. DD will currently graduate at 17. She was also premature. She was born at 28 weeks. We talked last night about repeating the 10 th grade. The 5 plans include private school and private tutors. At this point I'm not sure her mom will let me homeschool. My husband and his parents are very much for it. Dd will got to college. At this point she's clueless to career goals. She's talked about nursing. Thank you for your help so far.
  14. I have a step daughter who is miserable in PS high school. She has had a few medical issues in the last two years and the kids are making fun of her for it. She is failing most of her classes. She has also had two teachers fired because of poor classroom management and belittling the students. My husband has asked me to research out five different plans for her next year. Dh and I both feel it is important she has an accredited high school transcript. I Know there are a lot of options us. DD doesn't have very good study habits so she'll need my help and a teacher watching too. High school is new to me. Ds is only in the 4th grade. I've taught up to 6th in the classroom and tutored up through high school. Can anyone give me a few suggestion on how to start looking? Dd is begging for help.
  15. Thank you so much. Dh and I are turning off the TV in the evenings. I want a little boy who is well read.
  16. I'm looking for a reading list for 4th grade. Would you mind sharing the books your kids read in fourth grade. This is for ds starting this summer. Thank you for your help.
  17. We have done it to ds. If he does do well in school he swims, plays chess, basketball or see friends. If not there is nothing that day. Academic work ethic is what will pay the bills in the long run. That's my two cents.
  18. I'm a former public school teacher. This is the amount of work. You know the main difference is I teach until he masters it. I can't lay any of at my parents feet. It's the biggest challenge and the most fun of my career. :001_smile::)

  22. We are finishing up Calvert 3rd grade. We love it! I don't know how the virtual schools work but we get manuals with lessons for each day. It's all planned out for you. The math is good. Calvert took it a step ahead of Texas Teks. I did add a warm up daily with his math. He was forgetting concepts because we didn't cover them daily. The reading, spelling, science and social studies are very good. We added our own daily reading and read a louds. Ds loves the experiments in science. It doesn't have handwriting but there lessons on how use the computer.
  23. I haven't done STOW but I have a 9 year who likes this too. We review material daily and weekly. We use Calvert and take very detailed test. We learn in chucks. I create worksheets that have the details on it. He goes over and over it until he can do in his sleep.
  24. What do you like about and what do you not? We are looking at it for fourth grade. Thanks for your help.
  25. We have educational goals for this year. 1. Make Calvert honor roll. 2. Master Texas taks test math 3. Exit out of speech therapy 4. master Texas taks test for reading Yes they look like public school but it's Dh and my agreement. Ds has passed the Texas reading test and the math. Also he exited speech therapy today:party: We are on the road to honor roll. When we hit all these goals I sure would like to share them with a few public school people. :lol
