Step-parenting is not for sissies
jayb842 replied to Scarlett's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Scarlett, I don't have a lot of advice but wanted to give you :grouphug:. I have two "step" daughters. I homeschool one along with ds. The other one is another state. My best advice is just be as loving, patient and understanding as possible. I know your doing a great job! God placed these young people in our lives so we could help shape them. -
I would call Abeka. We use it for 4th grade. It's our first year to use it. I really like it.
-
I would check out abeka 6th grade. It should be a good review and challenge him at the same time. Abeka makes their problems larger than most curriculum I've seen.

My mom died when I was 3. My dad remarried when I was 5. My grandmother had a fear I would forgot my biological mom. She would drag me at 5,6,7 years old to my mom's grave. She would force me to look at pictures of my mom and retell stories of her. She was toxic. My step-mom hated her too. It wasn't over me. It was because she felt she was in competition with my biological mom. She was fighting a ghost. ( Honestly she married my dad for money and security.) When I was 7 my grandparents sued for "vistation". What is funny is I really don't know who won. To this day both sides claim victory. Someone on my mom's side finally figured out this was destroying my life. They backed off until I was 18. My step-mom and grandmother still can't be in the same room together. It's been 28 years since all of it took place. We have a situation with my middle daughter that is almost the same. Dh's ex took off with Dd when she was a baby. My dd doesn't really know my in-laws at all or dh. We see her four times a year. My in-laws see her twice a year. They could have sued for vistation but are trying to just let her grow up without waves. I didn't think it bothered my father-in-law until a few days ago. He misses not knowing the female version of DH and himself. ( For a kid that didn't know dh very well, she sure does acts like him. )

We're using Abeka this year. Ds is thriving in it. I was wondering if anyone knows in what grade does Abeka's math stop being so far ahead. I know by Texas public school standards ds will be doing some 6th grade math by the end of 4th grade in math.

Well I'm a West Texas girl, born and raised , and I LOVE Houston! I moved here almost three years ago. We live in Kingwood. We adore this area. I drive 10 minutes to anything. I live two minutes from the grocery store, five minutes from the YMCA and church. Our neighborhood is very quite and in general Kingwood people are very nice. We have very big homeschool community with tons of activities. Dh works downtown and has about a hour commute. I know in West Texas my kids wouldn't have the same level of activities ability to them.

Anyone in Gulfport area? My step-daughter is there. We haven't heard anything sense last night. We know her mom will take care of her.

From a former public school teacher please don't be afraid to what is best for your kid. I used so much time up going to the bathroom, sharping pencils and teaching to the middle road kids. Praying that some way my kids that were struggling some how would get enough to pass state test. Forget challenging kids that were gifted. Ds went to k. He didn't learn anymore than he knew. He did enjoy the kids and parties but he was exhausted daily. He slept every afternoon. He was sick a ton.

Anyone have experience with National Connection Academy. (It’s the same as your state connection academy but we are paying. )We are bringing home our daughter who will be a junior in high school this year. This mom has not done Algebra 2 since college. I need a teacher to back me up. 1. Can you really get a teacher to answer questions quickly? 2. Is it worth the money? 3. Do you feel like your child got a good education? 4. How flexible was it?

Am I freaking out for nothing?
jayb842 replied to jayb842's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thanks for the replies. Dh was just as mad over the issue. We both figured out it was just hair!!!! Our main issue is getting dd exams done. It was against school dress code. Her mother knew it and let her do it. I'm just hope this doesn't cause issues with us pulling her out of public school. -
My step-dd was kicked out of public school this morning. He mother and her colored her hair pink last night. She is a sophomore and we have planned for me to homeschool her next year. She didn't take her two finals of two classes she should have easily passed. The school sent her home. According to step-dd she can take the test on Monday. My huge is the fact mom let her do it and she is coming to my house with pink hair for the summer. It's something I would NEVER allow her half sister or my son to do. If we alllow her to keep it to me it's sending the wrong message to my other kids! Am I right or just freaking out for nothing?

I'm waiting on his official grades( we use Calvert with Advisory Teacher Services.) I'm going to print of ds awards for his achievements. He'll get an award for finishing speech therapy, Grade award, awards for making 90 on his math state test and 93 on his reading test. I thought about a scrape book page with pictures of the year to put in his record book.

Awesome!!!!! Doesn't feel good to know your kids are successful! Your doing a great job! -
I don't have any suggestions but thanks for posting this. My dd is going to retake chemistry. We are just pulling her from ps. I don't think she has the math skills to do it. This gives me a great start for review this summer. Do you have a text you will be working with or other resources your working with?
