  1. Here's another thought: if you can crochet (it's super-easy) - you can make a grocery tote out of...plastic bags! See here: for a picture. If you are interested in that option, LMK & I'll get a link. Am in the middle of making dinner & running back & forth to catch up on the boards and FB ;)
  2. Reisenthel bags are very popular here and hold up remarkably well. I know the site is in German, but I am betting there is somewhere in the US (Amazon?) that carries them!
  3. Perfect! I am going to find something - parasailing or something - and take my Dad on that. Just us. He will love it. I was thinking material, but time with him is so important! Thanks also to all who agreed with the scrapbook. I know he will love that as well!
  4. My sweet father grew up beyond poor. He has worked and worked his entire life and done extremely well. His lifelong dream has always been to take his family on an amazing trip - all expenses paid. In a few months, that dream will be a reality for all of us (8 ppl. total). I am so proud of my Dad, and my Mom for helping him in any way that she could she all of these years. :) I would really like to give them both a gift. It's hard, because they "have everything". I think I have decided to make a beautiful kaftan for my mother. I have the pattern picked out and am looking for fabric now. She will love it, I feel sure. But what for my Dad? He's so hard to shop for - and ideally I'd make something, putting in the time I am putting in for my mother. I can knit, sew, and crochet - but not sure how man-friendly any of that is! ;) FWIW I plan to make an album of our trip on my Mac and give that to him in June for Father's Day...
  5. Haven't read the replies, but will tell you that I was bitten by a spider last spring and spent every weekday in the doctor's office for almost 5 weeks having the dressing changed on a horrendously infected bite because I waited too long to have it looked at. Better safe than sorry - take her ASAP! ETA - so glad that you took her on in. Praying for a speedy recovery!
  6. Wow - ty all so much for your thoughtful and helpful answers :grouphug: I may need to talk to the priest again about the convalidation. I think that I could handle a blessing of our marriage far more easily than if I thought that our marriage in the UMC wasn't "good enough". Too bad I already screwed up and asked DH if he'd be willing to get our marriage validated... :tongue_smilie: Totally off the subject, but theoretically then one could marry many times in anywhere but a Catholic Church, and none of the marriages would be recognized. That seems strange to me (not in a bad way at all - just something else to distract me) ;) Can I just tell you that the first two times that I read your post I read "radical sanitation". I was miffed at why my marriage would need to be radically sanitized in case DH won't go for the convalidation! At any rate, the one thing that keeps me going throughout this process is that I hear so many stories of spouses who have followed - even years later - and joined the Catholic Church. I think that DH had such a confusing time growing up RC and S. Baptist. The one thing he remembers most about his RC experience is that the Sisters at his elementary school were quite fond of smacking the children on the backs of their poor little heads if they mis-behaved in Mass. :001_huh: Right now we do not go to a Protestant church - although I go to Mass once/wk. My children have been a few times, and DH came when I went through the Rite of Initiation. I do not think that DH & the children would go to a Protestant church if I became Catholic, and that bothers me so much. I was the one who grew up going to church every Sun. and Wed. nights, and I have always been the one who initiated going/joining. The girls and I were always far more active than DH: Sunday School, Wed. night activities, etc. DH would come for church, however, and really liked it. He reads the Bible and prays, but really sees the other stuff as fluff (for lack of a better word). I'm quite sure he'd like me to stop rocking the boat!
  7. I was going to post this to the Crossing the Tiber social group, but think that there are several more Catholics here on the General Board, and I just know that someone can help me with these issues. My background is that I grew up mainline Protestant, and am now in RCIA. I fully intend(ed?) to join the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, and am unsure and scared by the doubts that I am having. I saw our priest last week. I really, really like him and he was nothing but kind while I met with him. The reason for the meeting was two-fold: 1. DH (baptized in the Catholic Church, but no other sacraments received) was married prior (in a Las Vegas chapel, no less!), and 2. The church where I was baptized as a child can not find a record of my baptism. On the first subject, Fr. told me that we would have to be married in the Catholic church. Our marriage is not considered valid. Now, I knew that was likely to be the case but once I heard it out loud, it really rubbed me the wrong way. We have been married almost 16 years (married in a United Methodist Church) and love each other very much. Why must we be married again? I simply do not get it. To say that our marriage is not valid is to me the same as saying it is invalid. And I am not sure that I can agree to that. And I'm really not sure that I could get DH to agree.. On the issue of my baptism, I remember getting baptized on Mother's Day when I was somewhere between 4-6 years old. I remember it - I really do. It happened. I'm sure of it (did I mention that). But because there is no paperwork to be found at my former church, I will have to be conditionally baptized. I know what that means - it will cover me in case I really wasn't baptized. But I was. And I really don't want this - to me it feels like another baptism. I can completely understand why it needs to be done in some (most?) cases, but why when I already have been baptized? There's actually a third issue, if I might. DH - at this point at least - has no desire to join the Catholic Church and strongly prefers that the children not go to Mass nor take RE classes, although he has been supportive of me in going through RCIA. He believes that they will get confused. He grew up with Catholic mother and Southern Baptist father, so he knows all about confusion ;) We have always been Protestant, and until we moved to Germany were very active in our local church. He firmly believes that we will again become active in a Protestant church once we return to the US (we just aren't happy with the English-speaking ones here). What is the wisdom here? I am almost 100% sure that the Catholic church is where I want to be. I do believe that it along with the EO Church were the original church that Jesus set up. I'm not knowledgeable enough to say that it still is the "right" church, but I do believe (hope?) that it comes closest. But if DH refuses to go to a Catholic church - but will go to a Protestant one - am I not splitting the family up? Should I not go where he wants to go - after all, Protestants are Christians as well... As you can see I am insanely confused. I appreciate anyone who has read this far, and would love to hear what you have to say. I am headed out for several hours, but will check back as soon as I return. Thanks!
  8. TY all for your thoughts. I think that I am going to have to try SBD one more time. I have to get my cravings under control. I keep saying to myself that I haven't been overweight all that long (I never was until my DDs were born) - but I just turned 42 and all-of-a-sudden realized that the past 10 years is about 1/4 my life  To me, that's a scary thought. So, today is the end of the junk. We have movie night every Fri., & I want my buttery popcorn one last time. If I work hard, I know I can make my goal in 12-13 mos., losing 1.5 lbs./wk.
  9. I have tried NoS in the past and found it easy to do. I lost a decent amount of weight while on NoS, but quit and am now within 5 lbs. of my all-time high :glare: I'm not sure what to do... South Beach Diet sounds really good to me right now - I need to get control of my sever carb cravings (addiction?), but am scared that I won't make it through the 1st two weeks. I've never made it past the 3rd day... For those who have lost weight on NoS and SBD (and don't mind answering), how much have you lost, and how long did it take you to do so? TIA! Oh - and FWIW I am going to Barbados in two months and would love to have at least lost 15-20 lbs. by then ;)
  10. When it's light out early (which can be 5:30 AM or so), we usually start NLT (no later than) 8:30. Nov.-Feb. we are lucky to start by 10:00.
  11. It depends on what we have going on that day. On a good day, I get to stay in PJs all day & usually shower at 8:00 when the girls go to bed. Otherwise, I shower before heading out of the house, which means anywhere from 6:00 AM-lunch time I'll take a shower. My DDs actually get excited when they see me showered and dressed - they know that means that we are going somewhere ;) They used to get dressed every morning, but now they look as ratty as I do and that makes me sad... In reality, I am overweight & I am just more comfortable in drawstring pjs and a t-shirt. But I do worry about the example I am setting for my DDs. My poor DH rarely sees me in anything but pjs... More info than you asked for, but there it is! FWIW, I believe that I would get more done and feel better about myself if I were to get up, shower, and get dressed before my DDs each day.
  12. Thanks! We really want to go to London while we are living in Europe, but I have a feeling we would need more than two days - and not sure if we'd return if we go now. OTOH, maybe we could do two days on either end of our main trip... It's exciting to be able to live here, but overwhelming at the same time. I feel like there is so much to do / see and I worry we'll never get to it all (and realistically I know we won't) ;)
  13. ...to see one of the following places, which would you suggest/choose: Paris, London, Madrid, or Dublin? We are headed from Germany to Barbados in early spring, and are considering a pit-stop on the way (to break up the long - can't het there from here flight). TIA!
  14. Have you looked into Tumblr? I like it because it seems to be a cross between Twitter and a full-blown blog. It's incredibly easy to set up, too. I hope it's OK to throw something else into the mix :D
  15. I am an American living in Germany - for at least 2.5 more years, hopefully more!
  16. iCal does everything as well - it synchronizes Mac Mail (push), iCal, & Contacts - I have an iMac, an iPod Touch, and an iPad, and all sync wirelessly and within seconds of an entry/change! I have my iCal set up with different calendars for DH, DDs, weekly menu, etc. I can also make each one a different color. It all syncs via iCloud. HTH
  17. Another vote for iCal! Love it, and IMO it looks better than GCal ;)
  18. Also - if some brands are out of your budget, try eBay. I like a particular brand of jean that retails for $110. I regularly get them - new - on eBay for around $40! My daughter wears a lot of Gap - and almost all of it I buy through eBay. Good luck!
  19. How about a salt lamp? We got my mother one a few years ago & she loves it! I knew that she would not be too keen on the irregular shaped ones, so we bought a med. sized globe shape. I bought hers from Overstock.com, but Amazon has pretty good prices. HTH!
  20. TY both so much (I really wanted to write "sew" much but resisted - sorta) :D My SIL has 3 or 4 shower curtains that she rotates and I really like that idea. It would be nice to have one for each season and just use neutral towels.
  21. I am a relative novice when it comes to sewing, but would really like to make a shower curtain for my DDs' bathroom. What type of fabric should I look for (it will be used with a vinyl liner)? I read online to look for decorator fabric - what exactly is that, can I use quilting fabric instead? There seems to be a much greater selection of that than anything else. Would I need to line it if I use quilting fabric (and then also use a vinyl liner)? Any help/thoughts would be most appreciated!
  22. How about a donation made in her name? My parents already have everything that they could ever want or need. Instead of racking our brains all year long, we make donations to the Red Cross (my Dad has volunteered with them for years and years) and also Heifer Int'l. (their church supports that one). Also, I am a knitter an usually give them each a scarf each year at Christmas (this will be the 1st year in about 5 yrs. that I didn't get one made). It's become a tradition that they really seem to enjoy. Also on Mother's Day I give my Mom & MIL each a small basket filled with 4-5 knitted dishcloths, a nice hand towel, and a nice soap. Hope some of these ideas will help!
