  1. Thank you, I was able to use this today. :) It's funny how it works, though, and at first I thought it wasn't valid! It subtracts the shipping charges from the subtotal and shows up in the list of purchased items, but still shows the shipping charge below. So if you don't notice that it's been "canceled out", you might think it didn't work. Just an FYI for anyone who might try and think it didn't work!! Thanks again, Faith
  2. I use That's My Home. I've found many things that I like there. Oh, adding this blog, too! Mom's Best
  3. Thanks a bunch! This sounds like a great option and thanks for the link. :)
  4. Has anyone ever created a photo book made up of digital scrapbooking layouts? For example, could one use Photoshop Elements to create pages (images) that would fit one of those 8.5x11 or 12x12 photo books? I'm thinking that I may not do traditional scrapbooking very much anymore if I can have my digital pages made into a really nice photo book!
  5. My 10yo dd loves Tom Petty. Go figure! I thought he sounded great. Even though he wasn't very exciting, I thought he really seemed like he was loving what he was doing. He's one of those musicians who just purely loves it and I like that. :) Plus, I could mill around and do stuff while he sang and I didn't feel like I'd miss much visually. LOL!!
  6. I would take... 1. The Bible 2. The Swiss Family Robinson (which happens to be one of my all-time faves AND would help me keep a proper attitude in my situation...hehe) 3. The Riverside Shakespeare 4. A book of poetry OR one of the Norton Anthology of _____ Literature books 5. Any book on edible indigenous plant-life that just happened to apply to the island on which I were stranded!!
  7. Just starting The Woman in White for my 888. I finished a brain candy selection, The Wheel of Darkness by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child (I love most of their stuff. Relic, Reliquary, Cabinet of Curiosities, etc.)
  8. AND shy, but when a really obnoxious kid snapped my bra in 6th grade (where I was new!) I reacted and punched him in the face. Not super hard, but I got sent to the principal's office! LOL First and last time. When I got there, our 70-something principal asked me what happened and I told him, blushing and SO embarassed. He patted my hand and told me he understood but that I shouldn't respond that way again and should ask for help instead. Then he let me take a piece of candy out of his candy jar and sent me on my way! LOL Not as bad as the stories of paddling I'd heard!! ;)
  9. He's doing some research! (examples of what he means: Big City Lights Center, Workin' Roundhouse, Suspension Bridge, Siren Sounds Rescue Tower, High Chimes Clock Tower, etc. or even their favorite train) Thanks for your responses! :D
  10. Scotland Yard by Ravensburger which we just bought. My dh said he used to play it when he was a teen and we all love it. Great game for using deductive reasoning! Here is the description: This clever detective game has won awards and fans all over the world. Mr. X, a fixture on England's "Most Wanted" list, is on the run in London. Will Scotland Yard find and capture him before time runs out? One player takes the part of Mr. X and slinks around the city, leaving clues for the others, who are the Scotland Yard detective team. Was the elusive Mr. X last seen at Buckingham Palace or Madame Tussaud's? Did he travel by bus or taxi? Strategy skills and teamwork will help Scotland Yard players trap Mr. X and win the game. If, on the other hand, Mr. X manages to escape capture, he (or she) wins. The game includes a playing board, log book, visor, 6 playing pieces, 20 cards and 125 travel tickets. For 3 to 6 players. We also like Apples to Apples, the Amaze-ing Labyrinth, Rack-O, Clue and Clue FX, Chinese Checkers and we're getting ready to buy Dutch Blitz because we've heard such good reviews.
  11. I keep forgetting the bee analogy and start hoping for a chrysalis one day... LOL
  12. A book you might like is What Every Girl Should Know from HeartofVirtue.com They have some sample chapters to preview and a free teacher guide when you order the book. It covers a girl's spiritual life, character, practical skills, relationships and lots more. There are some activity ideas and great quotes and scriptures sprinkled throughout. Our middle school girls' group really liked it.
  13. I usually get in at least an hour or two each night. BUT, I need to set a time limit for myself or I will literally read until 4 a.m. and then the whole family suffers. LOL!! Nighttime is the only time I can squeeze in reading, but I'm trying to wake up earlier to have some alone time then, too, so that I am not gorging myself on books all night. :D
  14. I'm really enjoying the challenge! I like that it has made me more goal-oriented and focused in what I read. I'm purposely choosing--and I've swapped books in my list a few times!--from a wider variety of material. ANYwho... I have finished 6 books from my 888 list and 5 other books. I'm reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn right now, which is not on my 888 either. I'm trying to get into the habit of marking or writing down passages of each book that I enjoy, writing a brief review and brief plot synopsis, and also making a list of the main characters. I ALWAYS forget names from books that I read and then when I'm trying to describe it to someone else, particularly to recommend it, I sound like a dork who didn't really read it. LOL
  15. Our favorites are Scotland Yard (Ravensburger), Clue, The Amaze-ing Labrynth (Ravensburger) and our kids also like Cranium Zooreka, Chess and the Star Wars Miniatures game. :D
  16. I also recommend Something the Lord Made. I ran out and bought this the day after seeing it on HBO! Very good performances by all.
  17. Exactly the same at our house. Plus, there are sometimes t.v. shows that we enjoy watching with our older ones and so 10:30 or 11 works well. :D
  18. My first grader just picked up The Aeneid yesterday and will finish it up sometime tonight. Kidding! heehee! Just being a stinker. He really just finished a hardback collection of Curious George stories. He's also getting into Magic School Bus books, Nate the Great and he likes magazines (Boys' Quest and Your Big Backyard) and the game Apples to Apples Jr. All counts as school to me! :p This is my ds who did not get blending or most other phonics concepts until late this past summer. He's having fun now! :D
  19. Personally, I think that they could extend the number of threads per page so that we could have 30-40 threads to view before having to go to page 2, etc. But I also like the idea that all of this will reduce the number of posts that, well, don't have much of a point or purpose. People will see that "I just took an hour to shovel my driveway!!" (and nothing further) messages really don't require conversation and that space for conversation is at a minimum because of how people USE the forum--and they'll use the space for things that can actually spark discussion. :) KWIM?
  20. Yeah...HomeschoolChristian's forum uses a different "language"/technology (ASP vs. PHP) and it might not be something that WTM wants to use or they might not even have ASP as part of their web hosting package. Who knows. lol
  21. It's making the long distance care of my husband's grandmother possible! They constantly evaluate and re-evaluate her health care and provide whatever she needs while she resides at the assisted living facility. Sometimes she's doing well and they visit less. Sometimes her Alzheimer's and lung cancer take a toll on her and she needs more so they are there for her. They've made it possible for her to stay in her new "home" with friends at the assisted living place while still being cared for as she moves into the final phases of her disease and her life. It's nice to have 2 concerned parties letting us know if she needs anything and updating us.
  22. The things you mentioned don't fall under "chores" in our house, they are just expected and part of being responsible for your own stuff. :) The things we assign as chores are more for learning opportunities, more complex cleaning or organization and also to be sure that everyone gets a chance at doing them AND gets a break FROM doing them. LOL With 6 kids, having assigned chores makes the list the bad guy instead of me, too. hehe
  23. Really, we've never done anything but homeschool and playing the "what if...?" or grass-is-greener game has bitten me in the hiney too many times to want to go there. lol I just try not to let myself believe the lie that my circumstances or any outer influences ultimately control what kind of mom and person I am. It's a tough pill to swallow sometimes, but if I want to be nicer and sending my kids to school is what accomplishes that, I'm afraid of what that would really say about me. :( And that has nothing to do with what school choice is right for each family, each child. I don't believe that homeschooling is the right answer for everyone.
  24. but here is another one with some good info and links. http://pbskids.org/zoom/fromyou/elections/elections101.html
