  1. We use the kits from Natures Workshop Plus. My DS did Chemistry and Physics at the co-op so I didn't buy that kit, but we did use the one for Astronomy, human anatomy and physical science. Each modules supplies are organized together and labeled. It has worked well for us.
  2. My ds,7th grade, is extremely sciency, and especially interested in chemistry and phyiscs, also. I'm also looking for resources for other science areas that he hasn't been exposed to yet. He's read "Molecules" and "Elements" by Theodore Gray, "Backyard Ballastics". There are a few I can't remember, so I'll post after I ask him.
  3. Our local homeschool organization had Rebecca Rupp as a speaker last month. She said she would really like to update her books, but the publisher doesn't want to. Too bad, they look interesting.
  4. My dd, fairly quiet, decided to email all 11 freshman runners on the cross-country team. I think email makes it easier for her to take that first step. She was excited to start hearing back from them last night. Now, she just has to start navigating the profiles for potential roommates.
  5. Also, after each course description, I included: (for example) Course Grade: 100%= A AP Test Score: 5 Course Completed: 6/2016. Credit : 1.0
  6. G5052, we are in the same boat that you were in with your oldest. My dd went to France on an immersion exchange for 6 months last year (Feb-Aug), her junior year, and didn't have enough time to finish physics. So, she's had a busy, stressful year trying to finish a few classes from junior year. Now that AP classes are done, she's trying to finish physics as a Senior. It is really difficult!! She's ready to be done, but she's majoring in Mechanical Engineering and she needs a good foundation in physics. We'll just keep pulling away!
  7. That is very interesting! I'll have to see if our library has that book. Thanks!
  8. OhElizabeth, Thank you for the reminder about the questionnaires! She is our oldest, so this whole now 18 years old has thrown me. Who I can still talk to for her, and what has to be signed in order to, etc. And of course they'll need my signature in order to bill our insurance company.
  9. Yes, she has had vision therapy and it has helped. She also has exotropia, eye turn, so she will always have to deal with that. She really could have used accommodations for the SAT, but we went back and forth on if we should really do all this testing when we knew it was her eyes. This spring she did say she had a really hard time filling in the bubbles, because she hadn't done it in a while. We will be doing testing privately. Also, my dd and I wonder if she has something else going on. We know she has mixed dominance. She is right handed, left eyed and uses her left foot to kick a ball. When we started the testing process 2 years ago, the psychologist mentioned this could be an indicator. At that time, she had not completed VT so we held off the testing so she could complete it. She's struggled this year in her online science class. She would read and reread the text and not be able to even come up with questions to ask for help. Now, there really wasn't much teaching, unfortunately, so that is part of it. We decided to skip the AP test, because she was so stressed out about it. Even in classes she is strong in, everything takes her longer. She has always had a hard time handling 5 or more classes at a time in high school. I wasn't sure if it was because she is a perfectionist, and often tends to overthink. My dd will call the disability center on Monday to see what she will need for documentation. Thank you!
  10. Hi, My daughter was diagnosed with convergence insufficiency at age 15. She got a 504 at the public high school for the 1 class she takes there a year. It allowed extra time on tests, and larger font. She does need both of these accommodations at times in her class. We're not sure if there is anything else going on. She has always been very strong in English and reading, but math and science, particularly when reading text books, does not come as easily. Our understanding is that she'll need testing done to qualify for any accommodations in college. She is doing really well in calculus in the high school and does not always need extra time; however, she will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering, and I'd hate to not do this and realize we should have. She has her first appointment this week. She's 18 now, and likes to be independent. I think it would be helpful to her if I was there, for the 1st appointment and the final appointment. I think it can be confusing, and a lot to digest. Any advice?
  11. We didn't realize we had a mice problem until we found lots of mouse droppings in our Christmas storage bins. At the same time, a few mice made it into the kitchen, and we called an exterminator. He put poison in the garage, under the kitchen sink, and in the basement. Then, we realized they had been in the ceiling in the basement for years. After a few months, they were finally killed off. Then we had to take down the ceiling in the basement, tear out the carpet, and replace all of the insulation. I'm so glad they are finally gone. I hope you find a solution soon!
  12. I just found out her class ended last week, and there was not any discussion about using a test prep book. The test is May 9th. Anyone have a suggestion for me? I'll be heading out to buy one tonight! Thanks!
  13. Gr8lander, I'll have to see if my daughter is using her test prep book now. Good idea! With the scores arriving in July, it didn't seem like it could be part of her grade. She's feeling very underprepared right now. And from conversations this year, I believe the teacher will say it is because she didn't post enough. She's been studying hard all year, but can't quite grasp it. I do think she could be successful in this subject if there had been some direct teaching. Grantmom, she is considering just taking it to see how she does. We'll see how it goes using the test prep book. Thanks!
  14. My dd is taking AP Bio but has struggled in the class most of the year. Basically, the teaching style was not a good match with her learning style. Now, she's so stressed about the test, that we're considering not having her take the test. She thinks the teacher is requiring it. She's a senior, and would not get credit at her college for this class. She's not new to AP classes and has done very well on the three she took the last 2 years. She's also doing well in AP English Lit right now. I'm just done with the stress of this class. She's a bright kid, but but this class really expects the kids to learn just by reading the text book, and asking questions on the board. She has a hard time formulating questions about something she doesn't understand. Thanks!
  15. Grove City College Major: Mechanical Engineering Reason for choosing this major: She had planned to major in Neuroscience, but after she went to an engineering day at a big engineering company two weeks ago, she decided on Mechanical Engineering. Her dad is an electrical engineer. She hoped to minor in French, but she only has one elective with this program. Reason for choosing this school: They have a strong Mechanical Engineering program. Additionally, she really wanted to attend a Christian college. She likes the cross country coach and the program. And she felt comfortable at this school. She was not even considering this school last fall, but she did fill out the online athletic form, and the coach called her. This peaked her interest in the school. Then, everything else clicked. Also, the cost of this school is relatively low. .
  16. My dd is visiting one last school right now, with the expectations that it will probably be the one she chooses. It wasn't one she was looking at last fall, but now she's realizing the potential of the school. It's about 9 hours away, so she went off with her dad and sister.
  17. I found the DVD's helpful. He starts with picture books to make it easier to learn how to teach it. Depending on the ages of the kids, they could watch them also. My dd was in 8th grade and she watched with me. Then, she did the Center for Lit discussion class. I plan to watch them again this summer with my ds, 12, because I haven't done much with Socratic discussions in teaching yet.
  18. Corraleno, I think you are probably right. They haven't said she isn't accepted to the honors program, but she is qualified for the NMS commended scholarship, and they must be out of money. I think it's time to pick her second choice. I will be very glad when this process is over, and she can celebrate and look forward to the fall. Thanks Kareni. Nice to know we're not alone
  19. Thanks, FaithManor. I agree. Schools should not do this to the kids. They are trying to make a decision for the next 4 years of their lives. Plus, she wouldn't be giving a deposit over the phone, that would come from us. And who would give a deposit before the financial aid had been determined? She just called again to see if the decision would be made before May 1. At first, the man told her the scholarship money was all used. Nice, huh? She had a good response right away for that comment. A lot of this is new to her, so I has happy to see her think on her feet. Then, he again said she'd receive an email by May 1. She has had many situations like this with her applications this year. She is learning to speak up for herself, but it hasn't been fun. Unfortunately, if she gets this scholarship, this school would be the least expensive by far. But, we're all realizing it may not be the best choice. Think she'll visit the last few in the next week or so then she should be able to make a confident choice. Thanks!
  20. Thanks, Katilac. I hadn't realized she would need to "accept" scholarships, but she did get an email from one school about something similar. I'll have her check into it. Funny thing is, this same school called her on the phone and asked her to give $250 deposit over the phone, before she knew if she'd been accepted to the honors program and heard about the scholarship. My dd was very turned off. She hasn't seen this school, or 2 others in the same vicinity, so we hope to do that very soon. Asking in person is a good idea. Thanks!
  21. but it is so close to when my dd has to have her decision made. She has to get into the honor's program at this school in order to get the merit scholarship for National Merit Scholar commended. And it is substantial. They said she would receive notice by May 1st and that is the date decisions are due at all the schools. Should she send in her deposit to her second choice? Anyone been in this predicament? Thanks!
  22. Hi Jennifer, I hope this will help. We live in NH, in the same area as you. My dd sees Elizabeth Doppler-Bourassa of The Village Counsel, in Dover. She sees her for anxiety, and says Beth is helping her. My dd is in high school, so she prefers to Beth alone, so I can't provide you a lot of information. I do think seeing her is helping my daughter. She was recommended to us by the owner of my younger daughter's OT and speech therapy office. We go every other week, because it is a hike. We almost went to The Counseling Center before we knew about Beth, which is closer, but it is too big and impersonal. We had a bad experience there a number of years ago. Hope that helps.
  23. Update on Temple University, and emailed response to application, that my dd would have to take the GED since "your mother signed your transcript." Admission counselor directed me to one sentence on website that stated student needed a transcript from an accredited high school, along with 4 English classes, 3 social studies, etc. I called and my dd called, at least hoping to get our application fee back, but he insisted we should have know this before she applied. Now, 3 weeks later she received an acceptance letter! Hope that helps somebody! DD was also accepted to: Gordon College-merit scholarship, Wheaton College-merit scholarship, Messiah College-Honors Program and Merit Scholarship, Macalaster College, and Grove City College,
