  1. Depending on when you're in London there is this - http://www.thelionspart.co.uk/twelfthnight/ There are so many places we love, but one of my favourites is the British Library. Lots to see from pages of Leonardo da Vinci's notebook to original Beatles lyrics. The cafe there also does good cakes! lol. We also like the tour at the Globe. We spent hours there on our visit. There are some really nice smaller museums like the Foundling museum - which has a great park (Coram's fields) just around the corner. We have also enjoyed the Museum of Docklands and the Museum of London. London Zoo is great. The Golden Hinde is small, but we had a great time visiting about a year ago. The guy doing our tour was fantastic. Hope that gives you some ideas! :)
  2. :grouphug: Congrats...she's so sweet! What a lot of hair :) I have bald babies (and toddlers actually...lol)
  3. My daughter is 13 and a half, and has just whizzed through them all. She is very sensitive. I looked up the plots online, and told her a brief version of what happened and who died (she specifically asked me to do this). She handles things much better when she has an idea of what's going to happen. As a child (and now and again as an adult!) I often skipped ahead, or read the ending before the rest of the book, to see if I could 'cope' with what was going to happen. I hate surprises. I think dd is the same. lol. Anyway, she loved them. I read the first two and thought they were ok. Can't bring myself to read the third yet! I'd say 13 is probably the youngest I'd let a child read these.
  4. Olive oil :) ...works well for most things. Other oils might work as well, but I've only ever tried with olive.
  5. Well done - great post. I actually got asked this today! :glare: Loved all the pictures as well. :)
  6. Yes, I have and do. As long as you have rules in place, e.g, if this happens you do this, etc. One of our rules is no answering the door. I also leave a list of numbers by the phone (my number, dad's work and cell number, etc). I will phone and check all is ok a few times as well. Mostly they just watch tv, and when I get back they haven't moved off the sofa! :001_smile:
  7. You might try having her eyes checked to make sure nothing is going on there as well. :grouphug:
  8. I have a daily schedule for meals and chores. I have meals assigned to each day - eg, Monday is porridge for breakfast and pasta for dinner, Tuesday is scrambled eggs/toast for breakfast and chicken and rice for dinner, etc (I always do sandwiches for lunch). I do change it now and again, but it's so nice just to be able to look at my list and know what I'm cooking. We also have the same chores on the same days (unless there is some emergency cleaning to get done!). I use Friday as a catch up day, so we can get to any chore(s) that was missed during the week. My older two have 2 chores to do a day. We do one straight after breakfast and one after dinner. My children take a lot of classes outside the home so I have to run a tight schedule to fit everything in. We work on a two week rotation to get to all the subjects that my kids love to do, but we don't always have time for weekly (art, music, nature study, etc). I can post more details if you're interested in that! Anyway, hope this helps a bit.
  9. I'd like to get some of Burgess' books for my nature loving son. Are they suitable for him at 9 years old? I wasn't sure if they are for younger children. Any recommendations? I've been looking at the bird book and animal book. Many thanks.
  10. I just wanted to post to say my 9 year old son (turned 9 in June) has had the hardest time learning to read and write until the last few weeks, when suddenly something seemed to click. He's starting to remember spelling rules, and is reading (beginning reading books, but still...). His handwriting has also improved so much. We had tried just about every program going , and I felt like our last shot was Bear Necessities ...And well, it sems to be working. :001_smile: But more than anything it was like he had a developmental leap, and his brain is just now ready for all this stuff. I don't think all the previous attempts to teach him worked because he just wasn't ready...If that makes sense. Not that you shouldn't get him tested if you feel there is a problem, but just thought it might be helpful to hear our story. :grouphug:
  11. Yes, reading, writing and math are at the top! If we don't get around to anything else during the day I wil fit these in!
  12. My middle child is like this...it drives me nuts! I have another friend whose son is the same, and both boys share a birthday (June 2nd)! We wonder if that's a sign!? Are all your kids born on June 2nd? lol ;)
  13. Well, I have an A level in English lit. Mind you I did do it nearly 18 years ago :001_huh: ...but if there's anything you'd like to know or talk about pm me and I'll try to help!
  14. Yes!!!! My 2 oldest do this, and now the 3 year old has started copying them :glare: ...
  15. Could it be that it is trying to print them using microsoft word? This happens to me when I try and view something that has to be in adobe and my computer opens it in word. Failing that you could email their support and ask I guess. You're further along than me...I can't even get the pdfs I ordered to download! :001_huh:
  16. Song School Latin - everyone is liking it! :) From me down to the three year old (who sings the songs all the time). It's so much fun.
  17. You might find the BBC site helpful as well - http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/prehistoric http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/british_prehistory/ I also second the wonderful Satori Smiles blog. HTH :)
  18. Oh I hope so. We are loving Song School Latin, and I do feel that there is a big jump to LfC. I may email them and ask!
