  1. Be prepared for a mess, if they did fill it in. Ask if anything was put into the hole before covering it. Our neighbors had a lovely pool, but they didn't like the yearly expense, so they wanted to bury it. The pool's 6' fencing and the concrete patio around it all were dug up and dumped into the pool, and then it was buried; they turned that area into a prairie restoration. That's fine, as long as they live there, but if new people want to put in a pool, they are going to have quite a job.
  2. Warts are caused by a virus. If you can do something to help strengthen his immune system, that might help his body clear it sooner. Ask the dermatologist when you see her next time if she can suggest anything.
  3. Here it would have been just a stick from an overhanging tree in need of pruning falling to the roof. I'm sorry you were awakened like that -- hopefully, you can catch a nap today -- but at least it was something worth retelling!
  4. (((Melissa))) Praying for you.
  5. FWIW, a young relative had that problem until adding more fermented foods to the diet. Kombucha was/is the biggest help.
  6. If you prefer not to have to search through videos of cooking techniques on YouTube, this CD set might be helpful. Note that used copies are very cheap!
  7. Our mail carrier has gone above and beyond for us this year, and we want to give him a gift. Postal regulations say it has to be under $20 value and can't be cash or gift card or other cash equivalent. All I know about his personal life is that he has a giant cat. Any suggestions?
  8. Yes. I remember sitting under my school desk and thinking if there were a nuclear bomb we would all be dead, because the blast would come through the windows. I didn't understand why they'd think our tiny desks would protect us; they took us to the school basement in case of tornados, and surely nuclear blasts were worse. That really made me question the wisdom of the adults in charge. ETA: And there was a guy in my class that as early as 3rd grade served as the purveyor of doom for any and all possible disasters. He explained how we were within blast radius of the Strategic Air Command near Omaha, which would be a major target. That really helped us all sleep well at night. Thanks, John.
  9. Not the OP, but I found that the first few years of children helping set the table and load the dishwasher were the worst years for breakage. After that, we didn't break any, but somehow using the dishwasher for 20 years wore down the edges.
  10. We're using some plain white Mikasa china we got as a wedding gift. I saw some similar sets at Costco recently.
  11. All full of fat. Yes, that probably did it.
  12. 1. We are filtering for allergy control and general air quality in the home. Wildfire smoke is only occasional, and no one smokes in our home. 2. We need to change filters every 3 months, and the price of these older model HEPA filters is high. The cheaper knock-offs don't work as well. 3. Cost/noise/space are about equal for the machine itself, but I'd like each replacement filter to cost significantly less than half the cost of a new machine!
  13. We've had our air purifiers for several years, and we love how they improve the air quality in the home. The cost of the manufacturer's replacement filters has gotten ridiculous, though, and the off brand filters aren't as effective. We're considering replacing the machines with newer ones that use less expensive filters. Any recommendations?
  14. My college student wants to return a wrong color water bottle ordered from Amazon, but it came unwrapped without any UPC or serial number attached. There was manufacturer info tucked inside, but no serial number or UPC code on that, either. Any suggestions for getting Amazon to actually refund dc's money if this is sent back?
  15. In our family, this is where read-alouds played a helpful role. I would read aloud to the dc during their lunch (after I ate quickly), and I'd continue reading while they cleaned up the kitchen afterward. As long as they kept finding things to clean, I'd keep reading, LOL! They'd sweep the floor, clear the dishes, load the dishwasher, wipe down counters, put away leftovers, take out trash, etc. I also read aloud to them while they cleaned their rooms, folded and put away laundry, etc. To keep everyone moving the in morning, each had a personalized task list in a sleeve protector with a dry erase marker to mark off completed items: make bed, family Bible time, eat breakfast, dishes in dishwasher, get dressed, wash face, brush teeth, brush hair, take a walk, etc. At some point I added their assigned lunch tasks to it, as well as other things they needed to do each day. As I said, each child had his own list, and when the youngest couldn't read yet, the list was all hand-drawn pictures. I had a list, too, and we were extremely well organized; honestly, I've probably never been so organized in my life, either before or since we stopped using the dry erase task lists. I have no idea why we stopped; I should probably go back to that, just for myself.... Anyway, I hope something here helps!
  16. Ah. Okay, that makes more sense. Sorry, Katy! Still, several here didn't know about the broken window part at first, either, so I don't think it's fair to blame just conservative media, unless that's all people here watch/read, too. Leaving out key details is rampant among all media, it seems to me.
  17. Katy, why are you blaming the media for confusing the homeowner??? It sounds like he correctly understood the laws in his state. The investigators found he should not be charged.
  18. I'm so happy for you!!!! I'll keep praying!
  19. The story I read said that the young man broke the front door window in his attempts to get into the house. Regardless of his intentions, that certainly increases the likelihood the person in the home will assume harm is intended. Investigators determined Donofrio “mistakenly went to the wrong home and attempted to enter by repeatedly knocking, banging, and kicking at the front door while manipulating the door handle,” the release said. A woman who lived in the home called 911 while a man who lived there retrieved a firearm, police said. As the woman was on the phone with dispatchers, Donofrio broke the front door glass window and reached inside to manipulate the doorknob,” the release says. The man then fired a single shot through the broken window, hitting Donofrio, police said. “The investigation also determined that the homeowner was not prohibited from possessing a firearm and he legally owned the firearm for the purpose of personal and home protection,” the release said.
  20. There's always some truth underlying extreme reactions to events. Dogs do sometimes die from vaccines. They do sometimes get neurological damage from vaccines. I've known people whose pets experienced both of those situations; the owners went from being very pro-vaccine to being very, very cautious. My own dog had a severe allergic reaction to the rabies vaccine (it was seriously scary) and now the vet requires an antihistamine injection before it each time, with very few other vaccines given, as a precaution. As for dog autism, as Rosie said, who would know?
  21. (Cross-posting answer) All the original sets had solution CDs. Ebay has several full sets of Algebra I that include the solutions CDs, and there are several offers of full solutions CD sets available. I linked an inexpensive example of each, but there are others.

  23. I'd try soaking the hand and forearm in hot water in the kitchen sink. Or the entire arm in the bathtub/hot tub, along with the rest of you. Sorry you're dealing with this.
