  1. If you use Memoria Press 2nd grade and use the enrichment plans, how long does school take? Do you add anything? Have you changed anything out? If so, why? Thanks!
  2. Clearly, I'm going to need to up my book budget. You all list way too many books that interest me! I finished Introduction to Classical Education by Perrin. It is fairly easy to read. I've already read several books on classical ed, but found this to be a refreshing, concise summary.

  4. I would like to try to get 52 books in this year, so I believe I will join (if that's ok)! Currently reading: The Iliad - must have this done by Jan 5th for book club An Introduction to Classical Education by Perrin Leisure, the Basis of Culture by Pieper I have a long list of to reads.
  5. If you're moving after you sell the house, the first thing would be to locate a realtor. Once you have chosen a realtor have them walk through your house and make a list of things to do to stage your house, and then go from there. There will be a lot of de cluttering and minimizing involved, but if the realtor is good staging will make a huge difference in how quickly your house sells, and for how much.
  6. My 6-yr-old 1st grader is really enjoying, and understanding, Lambs. I have both, but we liked the language in Lambs better.
  7. I use Camel Camel Camel. It seems to work well, it send me an email when the price drops. Now I just have to decide how low I think the price will get before I buy.
  8. My concern about the guidelines they are following is that they are based on an old strain of Ebola. The current strain that is infecting people has undergone 300 genetic changes. That amount of change can mean a big difference in the way it should be handled. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140828142738.htm
  9. If you used CLE math with your child, after what grade did you change and what did you change to? I've heard great things about this program from current users, but I am wondering about what kind of math it translates into. Thank you.

  11. I have read previously that a lot of children reach a point in RightStart B where they struggle. I'm wondering where that point is. Right now, this is way too easy for my daughter. I need to adapt the pace somewhat, and it would be helpful to know where some students are struggling. Thank you.
  12. Level C version 2 has recently been released. I use version 2 of Level B; used version 1 of Level A. I like the way version 2 is set up, and I like the resale value of it. Either would work, if you want to purchase used. If you're purchasing new I would get version 2.
  13. 52 weeks of family German is what we're using to get started.
  14. When my daughter hit that point in FSR, I started using a combination of Explode the Code and the Classical Phonics books to target skills, and the readers (Soft and White, etc) for practice.
  15. There is a new Facebook group about Classical Education that I hope a few of you might be interested in: https://www.facebook.com/groups/681499701938306/ I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't really have many (read 1) people to talk about this with in real life, and would love to have a dynamic group of people to discuss and debate topics related to these ideas with!
  16. As far as too slow vs. too fast reading, I would think that it doesn't have to look the same for everyone. For some the one chapter a week pace will be perfect, for others it will be too slow. I would imagine that each person can find their happy place - reading at a comfortable pace, taking time to let things sink in and ideas to percolate; but not reading so slow as to lead to frustration. Sometimes that pace will depend on content. As for curriculum - with history and literature I don't follow a curriculum. I put together my own - but that's my background and I'm picky. Math and science is where I struggle more.. For this conversation it's really about finding balance for me. I've had multiple kids to work with always - even after my oldest graduated I had two, this summer four to work with - but starting this fall it will only be my 1st grader. I'm trying hard to make sure I have a balance, since it will be very easy for me to overload our schedule with just one.
  17. Thank you. This does a great job of helping me see the break down.
  18. FYI... her interview with A. Kern is available on the Circe podcast. Yay!
  19. I wish I could get the videos without the workbook... i would love to see the videos with Perrin and Kern.
  20. Thank you for the review, and the link. That is a lovely series of posts, and the one about Rigor and Dilligence is a gem. My take away from this discussion (and thank you all for participating and helping me) is that when I'm contemplating a feast I need to think long term, and when I contemplate depth I look at the year or semester or however far I want to break it down. I have a lot of other ideas as well, so thank you all!
  21. I am familiar with that blog, it is a frequently visited page for me. Maybe, if someone has read the book, they could review it or let me / us know if it addresses the above concepts? I think you could spread a feast; do much, not many; or combine the two concepts and teach from a state of rest.
  22. Thank you, this also helps with perspective. It seems that when I'm spreading a feast I need to think of more long term. If I focus on the number of years I have to work with her that makes it easier to think about the many topics to cover, and then taking specific topics in depth (for the much) each year, or semester, as is appropriate to the content.
  23. Thank you for your input. That analogy has helped me to gain some perspective. Yes, looking at one aspect of each only (which can admittedly be difficult to do...). Interesting and the bolded is something that I struggle with. One of the things that I'm also working on is weeding out books that are good, but not great. There are so many book lists, and it is way too easy to do many (no depth) or to fail to spread a feast (for example - use only historical fiction, vs a variety).
