Dear Person With a Screaming Toddler...
Silvina replied to I talk to the trees's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I can't believe the parents did not remove the child, to a quiet place to calm down. Children at that age cannot control themselves sometimes (especially if permissive parents have already shown them how screaming can actually get them anything they want...), Parents are supposed to be there there to help them, and to ensure that no one else is disturbed by this kind of behaviour...- 179 replies

Ouch!!!!! -
We read "The Cave twins" (it is in the public domain, you can download it for free to your PC/Kindle. It was fun, and it does cover the basics of prehistoric/nomad life.

Math for 1st to get kids solid with +/- facts?
Silvina replied to Mrs. Lilac's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I used Saxon, too. There is PLENTY of drill. Really. MEP is also a good alternative. And it is free :) You can check it out to see if it would fit your ideas. -
Unfortunately it is also a sad testimony of our society at large. These children are just mirroring what they learn at home, and what everything around them is telling them: you are what you have.

Kindergarten: HOD's LHFHG or Lots of Picture Books?
Silvina replied to Heart_Mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I would go with the reading out loud. Exposure to good books teaches so much, and it is relaxing and it feels good emotionally for everyone involved!!! It's a win win... -
k math what did you use that you liked?
Silvina replied to bttrflyvld's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am using MEP reception and some Montessori homemade materials for manipulatives. My children love math so far, so it is going pretty well... -
I have several moles removed, for medical reasons. I just wanted to add that the way they are removed depend a lot on the type of mole (some are raised, some are more "under the skin", etc) For the same reason, depending on type and size (plus depending on how each body heals) there could be a scar. Some of mine left scars, some didn't. ETA: for some the doctor used stitches, and some were cauterised after removal.

Nikola Tesla- anyone teaching about him?
Silvina replied to sagira's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I read this book : My Inventions (by N Tesla) which is a collection of autobiographical notes. It was very interesting, not very long, and you can actually feel his personality coming out from the pages. Not only his experiments and ideas are interesting, but his mental processes and the quality of his "inspirations" are amazing too. -
We have a limit of 50 books at our local library, but it includes all the branches in the county, We usually visit 2, but on ocassion have reached the limit. Only one of my kids (age 6) reads, so so far so good. When my DS 4 starts reading, we will have to get a new card :) To me the limit right now is mostly a question of how many books I can carry to the car... :001_smile:

What are your families favorite games?

We got Sequence for Christmas too!! My oldest has just turn 6 though, so he is playing the "basics" without yet grasping all the blocking strategies...but I think it is an awesome game!! :) -
Biblical Boy Names

I have Johann (German form of John) and a Raphael... and I always loved Theo (short form of Theophilos) :) -
I started my 6 year old with this book, and it has been a great experience so far!!! (the Kindle version is just 99 cents, so I gave it a try) I like the fact that it keeps some of the original phrasing in the retelling. "Shakespeare for children (Illustrated)" The illustrations also help in this age group, I think :)

Silvina replied to thescrappyhomeschooler's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well, on the topic of "people should know this, right?"... I was in the hospital elevator with my one week old baby, going for a check up. A middle aged man, after congratulating me about the baby, and asking me how old he was, went on asking me if it was my first. "yes, it is my first" I said. "Oh"... (looking at me) and you are already expecting your second!"... (No joke. He thought my belly was another baby...!!!!) I guess he needed a biology 101 refreshment on reproduction...- 132 replies

I believe we have to always keep in mind which is the real purpose of cursive writing in out times... To me, it is a question of hand-brain coordination and the development of fine motor skills, with the side benefit of producing something pleasing to the eye. It should not be a painful experience. If another style of cursive simplifies the outcome, why not?
