  1. Interesting. We're Christians, but we use plenty of "secular" materials.
  2. My 14 year old is sitting behind me, reading me quotes from the Introduction to Mathematical Thinking course that he's taking on coursera. I don't think he would have time for that if he was in school.
  3. I was at a CME (continuing medical education) conference at Oregon State University from 8-3 today. There were sessions on ovarian cancer, breast cancer genetic screening, breast cancer treatment, and the "alternative birthing movement." I mostly attended for the last session, so I could hear about my people. It wasn't as bad as I was afraid it might be. The speaker focused on what hospitals can do to improve relationships with the home birth community. I also: Watched two videos from Abortion: Quality Care and Public Health Implications (Coursera)
  4. I loved the Learning How to Learn course! Critterfixer, what are you using for your Latin? Today I: Watched two videos in Childbirth: A Global Perspective (Coursera) Took quiz for Childbirth: A Global Perspective (Coursera) Watched a video in Introduction to Marketing (Coursera) Took a quiz in Teaching and Assessing Clinical Skills (Coursera) Paid my deposit for the Herbal Medicine for Women ecourse (yay and ow!) http://avivaromm.com/study-with-aviva/herbal-medicine-for-women
  5. It's Wednesday! Morning, or night, or something. I'm working overnight at a birth center (postpartum staff), which means that I get a head start on self-ed for today while the family I'm taking care of is sleeping and the laundry is tumbling. Today I: Watched three videos on how to fold a fitted sheet (don't laugh, it was for work) Took the long pre-course survey for Abortion: Quality Care and Public Health Implications (Coursera) Watched one video from the Abortion course (Coursera) Watched four videos from Childbirth: A Global Perspective (Coursera) (Hopefully I'll be adding to this throughout the day)
  6. What are you looking for in these kids that you're not finding? What does well-socialized mean to you?
  7. Today I: Did this week's quizzes for Teaching and Assessing Clinical Skills (Coursera) Watched 3 videos for Gut Check: Exploring Your Microbiome (Coursera) (Hopefully I'll be adding to this throughout the day)
  8. Who here has children who are homeschooled and taking college classes? Do they do it online or in person? Which classes are they taking and how did they pick what to do? My oldest just turned 14 and will be eligible for the dual enrollment option at our local high school in two years. The nice thing is that he doesn't have to attend to do it, local homeschoolers participate too.
  9. It's weird. I looked for the other thread too, and it does appear to have disappeared into Cyberspace. My goals for this week are to stay current on my Coursera classes, with an overall goal of finishing each course. I am taking: Teaching and Assessing Clinical Skills Childbirth: A Global Perspective Gut Check: Exploring Your Microbiome Abortion: Quality Care and Public Health Implications Introduction to Marketing (I know it's a bigger list than I had on the other thread; there were two that started today). Today I; Did about half of this week's work for Teaching and Assessing Clinical Skills
  10. Don't be mad at yourself, Jenny! I get some of the questions wrong (I'm assuming Coursera) and it might be the way they're worded, or me not reading the question carefully enough.
  11. My goals for today are to work on my Coursera courses (I'm doing 3) and get the quizzes done, get the kids' schoolwork for the week assigned, and get our mountain of laundry folded and put away. I've put in some time today on Coursera and I think I'm going to essentially spend the rest of the day rotating through the things on my list.
  12. It's hard. Our oldest is in Boy Scouts and they sold popcorn in front of a local grocery store and had good luck with that. I couldn't bring myself to buy any; it was so expensive.
  13. Hm, the proportion of parents who I don't want the kids around? Half of the leaders. I like one leader, and his mom (who helps out). The other two leaders are the lady who had her kid taken (who has the husband with questionable discipline philosophies) and the guy who is leaving his wife.
  14. The CPS one isn't gossip. It was the woman who lost custody of her child that told dh her oldest was taken by CPS. She is a Venture Scout leader and helps with the troop/goes on camping trips. Her husband (who's not super involved with the troop) is the one who thinks it's ok to beat your teenager.
  15. So, my oldest ds, who is about to turn fourteen, has been in a local Boy Scout troop for over a year. Now, we live in a town where there are a lot of people that some would call trashy. In the past couple of weeks, I've been told that one of the kids' dads "beats" his children and was angry at another parent for not "giving his son a whupping" when the son (15) inadvertently hurt an ex-girlfriend's feelings by talking about the new girl he's going out with. This dad is not part of the leadership, but his wife volunteers with the troop. Dh found out (she told him) that her first child was taken away by CPS and she lost custody (different dad, not with current husband). We both think that, in most instances, having a child permanently taken by CPS should disqualify you from volunteering with the Scouts. Then this past weekend, while the boys were away camping, one of the wives of another leader posted on her facebook feed that she found out her husband had been having an affair. I ran into him at the store today and asked how they were doing and he said the equivalent of "I made a mistake and she told everyone and now I'm going to divorce her." I made ds stay home from Scouts tonight. Dh and I talked yesterday and have decided that it really is time to be done with the group, as these aren't the people we want to be role models for ds. There is another group nearby that I'd like ds to consider trying, but I know he's going to be mad when we talk to him about our decision to leave this one. How do I not feel bad for deciding to take him out of the troop? He likes the kids there and I've wanted it to work, but I just can't spend time with the other parents or have him around them. How do I stop feeling judgy? I think we're going to get judged for being judgy when we talk to the main leader guy (who I like) about needing to move on.
  16. This is our math tutor: http://midvalleytutoring.weebly.com/ We see her in person, since she lives nearby. She also does tutoring online.
  17. But why should they, when it's the parents' job to homeschool them, hire childcare to do it, or put them in school?
  18. We have our dining room table and a desk in the dining room. Most of the time, all of the kids work in there. Our older two will occasionally take their work to another room, and I feel like I can trust them both enough to go do work elsewhere.
  19. We use it as a supplement to Saxon Algebra.
  20. How is the schedule working for you? How long have you been doing this list?
  21. We have always kept everyone in the same part of the cycle for history the in the same general subject for science. This year we're doing ancient history. My 11yo, 9yo and 7yo are using Story of the World and my 13yo is in History of the Ancient World. 13yo usually joins us for Story of the World and then does his assignments in History of the Ancient World.
  22. We had a goofy thing happen last week. I assigned them the chapter that was listed in the teacher's guide. It had a different title in the actual book. So the kids were calling me at work to tell me that the chapter I assigned wasn't in the book. They did figure out what they were supposed to read.
