  1. We visited older son at Freshman Family Weekend a couple of weeks ago. We had a great time, and younger brother was able to stay in dorm room with older brother. Now younger son wants to go there also! We had to explain that college is more than hanging out in dorm and going to a football game. It was good to see son happy and settled In. It was also nice to meet his new friends and students in his dorm.
  2. We will be using Elementary Statistics by Triola (ISBN-10: 0321462572) plus the solution guide (ISBN-10: 0321462580).
  3. I finally found a place for my son to take the PSAT. I live in Chicago, and dealing with the Chicago Public School system is, shall we say, frustrating. You talk about the blind leading the blind, and the one in the lead either doesn't care or is very confused. Anyway, thanks to my homeschool e-group, I found a nice Christian school in NW Indiana that will let my son come in to take the test this fall. Also, my younger son will be able to play basketball on their team as a freshman. (We live about 10 minutes from IN). Anyway, I have read here on this forum, more than once, not to wait until the last minute about contacting schools regarding the PSAT. Thanks everyone for the great advice. God bless.
  4. My younger son (8th grade) scored lowest in reading comprehension. I am starting him on Reading Detective by The Critical Thinking Co. Check out this series at http://www.criticalthinking.com/series/015/index_c.jsp. It is something your daughter could do by herself.
  5. You could add the dvds Chemistry 101 and Biology 101 for a video component. Also, you could check out Khan Academy and videos on Youtube. Quizlet.com has online flashcards and "games" for Chemistry and Biology.
  6. At www.Currclick.com, they have an online writing class using IEW that cost about $100.00. I have not used it, but I have seen it posted there. :001_smile:
  7. Here we used Christian Liberty for Biology. My son get so much more out of this book and finds it much more readable that Apologia (my son made it to module 6 and then said "No more! I can't take all the talking."). Anyway, we are doing Spectrum Chemisty with Greg Landry. My son really likes the class, but he dislikes Chemistry. (He would dislike chemistry no matter what). He finds Spectrum Chemistry understandable and very doable. This is a solid, first year chemistry high school course. Next year, he will be doing Physics with Greg Landry and they use Conceptual Physics by Hewitt.
  8. I am interested in opinions on these too. I am considering using these within the next two years. Thanks
  9. We will be using this for 8th and 10th grades this year as 0.5 literature credit. I am really looking forward to this. My boys are very excited about some of the titles. I believe this will be a valuable resource in teaching my sons to view movies critcially and learn to analyze what is going on in a story. I can't think of any reason "not" to use it.:001_smile:
  10. You might want to check out www.Yourteacher.com. I believe the problems are worked out step-by-step. You can get a discount at www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.com
  11. This looks very interesting. Thanks for posting.:001_smile:
  12. Hi Ibbygirl, We did Algebra I in 8th, Geometry in 9th, and will do Algebra II in 10th. We will then do Pre-Cal in 11th.:001_smile:
  13. This is what we are doing for 10th: Bible - New Testatment English - IEW Windows to the World & Teaching the Classics w/Jill Pike lesson plans; R&S English 8 (finishing this from 9th grade); Essentials in Writing; Literature from Biblioplan Medieval Math - Algebra II using Math Relief & YourTeacher.com Science - Chemistry w/Greg Landry History - Medieval & Ren w/Biblioplan French - Rosetta Stone Electives: MBA in a semester w/Greg Landry Fine Arts: Guitar Performance, lessons and theory P.E.- Tennis
  14. I assign each level a full credit when used with extras such as Barron's E-Z French and a few other things, such as French song cds/books. I purchased the full 5 level homeschool set, so I would like my boys to complete the 5 levels by the time they finish 12th grade, but I will only give credit for 4 years of French using Rosetta Stone.
  15. Picked up son from Cedarville, and he said he loves it. He said he wants to go back to camp there next year, and he can see himself going to college there. So, Cedarville stays on the list.:001_smile:
  16. While we were checking in at Cedarville, other students and parents were wearing t-shirts from Liberty, Grove City and Hillsdale. I previously checked out Hillsdale and Grove City but neither have a male tennis team. I will be checking out Lee University in TN, recommended by a church member who is an alumni, and Grace College in IN, also recommended by a fellow church member. Thank God we still have two years before we begin applying to schools. Thanks so much for all the responses and suggestions. It really helps to walk through this with others in the same situation.:001_smile:
  17. Thanks for all the replies. They have been really helpful. I agree with Creekland. I am starting to see I have some pretty set ideas of what college should look like. This process has been a wake up call for me and this is just the 1st college we have visited.:tongue_smilie: My son will probably major in either some form of business or Bible/philosophy. He is not a STEM guy at all (I know people and interests change, but they would have to change a lot). Our plan is for him to pursue a graduate degree(s). At this point he is saying he may want to go into Apologetics. The low financial aid might be an issue. Also my son plays competitive tennis and is hoping to play in college. We are checking out the Moody Bible Institute, but he would like to experience something new for college.
  18. My son wants to attend a Christian college and we, his parents, couldn't agree more. My son initially mentioned Cedarville to me; many of his summer camp counselors go there. I had never heard of it. Anyway, we like what we found researching the school. It seems to have a strong commitment to Christ, great academics, the majors he is considering and is within driving distance from home. My son didn't seem as bothered by the size, he has no point of reference, but he did say it was small. I, on the other hand, was shocked by the size but tried to keep most of it to myself. After all, it will be my son staying there, if he chooses to go, and not me. As far as questions about Cedarville: 1. Are the professors helpful and approachable? 2. How is life in the dorms, and do most people live in the dorms all 4 years? 3. How strong is the commitment to Christ and what is chapel like? 4. How strong are the academics and are the student challenged to think? 5. How is the financial aid? Thanks
  19. Check out www.currclick.com. I think they offer an online Russian class.
  20. Yesterday, we drove our 14 year old son to Cedarville U. for a Worship Camp. This is a school that has been at the top of our college list for a while for several reasons. I figured the camp was a good way to low key visit, and so far, so good. Here are my initial thoughts: 1. The people are very friendly. 2. The campus is very clean and pleasing to the eye. 3. The dorms rooms are just that: dorm rooms. My two son, 14 and 12, were shocked. They said they thought dorm rooms would be like hotel rooms. You talk about a wake up call. I don't think it ever occured to my older son he would have to use a group bathroom in college. Anyway, the rooms and bathrooms were clean. The rooms were smaller than I remember my college room being, but that was a long time ago and memories fade/change over time. 4. My older son texted his brother and said the food was "ok". 5. The campus is SMALL and out in the corn fields. There is a little "downtown" about 2 blocks away that has a SUBWAY, a pizza place, a new Chinese restaurant, a bakery and barber shop. There is an ice cream place across the street too. Overall, Cedarville seems a nice place. I will get more information from my son about how he feels about it when I pick him up on Friday. Did I mention it was SMALL? We live in Chicago, go to The Moody Church and I attended a Big 10 school. This is my first experience with small to medium size schools. My son has always said he wants to go to a big school in a big city, and this is so not that. We will have to see.
  21. You might want to check out www.yourteacher.com. It is really good.:001_smile:
  22. I love your pet names! Too cute. :001_smile: I have no intention of meeting the state minimum requirements. I am not saying, "Welll you have the bare minimum, so you are done." My son is on schedule to complete Calculus and take both AP Chemistry and AP Biology when he is done with high school. He his leaning towards Pharmacy or Engineering. I have Biolmedical Engineering Degree FWIW. I am saying give credit where credit has been earned. I said nothing about give credit for 6th and 7th grade class that aren't highschool level.
  23. Is the point of homeschooling to follow the public school system? My son is done with high school when he completes the necessary requirements to graduate, whether he does that in the last 4 years of home schooll or the last 3.5 years. How is this dishonest? If he does high school level work, isn't that what he gets credit for? If he does part of that in 8th grade and finishes a little bit early, then that is the last 4 years of school work. I didn't choose to homeschool my children based on what the public schools do or don't give credit for. Our state, and every other state, gives requirements for high school graduation. That is what I follow. If the colleges we apply to do not have an issue with a subject listed transcirpt, then why should anyone else have a problem with it? As long as my child meets the requirements for admission and I am listing work done within the last 4 years, what is the problem?
