  1. I am not sure I understand what you are saying. At our school you have to have three years of math in high school to graduate. If you are starting with integrated 1, then you can take 1, 2, 3 and be done. Nobody will force you into any AP calculus. Now if you stated 9th grade in precalculus, then you can do one year of stats (AP or regular) and I believe Calculus AB will be a must because I don’t think there is any other math to fulfill the three year requirement. But honestly nobody at our school starts 9th grade with precalculus and if they did, those would be the sort of kids that would want to take AP. As far as dropping classes go, you can’t drop a class at our high school after the second week because you are required to have certain number of classes per year and you only have the first two weeks to make up your mind on what you are taking. This has nothing to do if the class is AP or not. You couldn’t drop regular history either. So if you have your three years of math done and you are taking AP Calculus AB and want to drop, you can do so during the first two weeks and replace it with whatever class you want. After two weeks all opportunity to change schedules disappears.
  2. All I will say is AP courses are the only ones where any real learning is happening in our local public school. This is a sentiment I hear over and over and over again from a lot of parents. While local private schools have moved away from APs and designed really amazing courses, the situation at these schools is very different. Parents are voting with their tuition money and quality is high. If our school were to ever drop APs, it would be a disaster for academic kids. I mean college board is now a new villain everybody loves to hate. They can’t do anything right. If you expand the program, you are criticized. If you open it only to high performing kids, then you are discriminating against poor. While I would rather have my kids at a top private with quality non AP classes, given the $55k per year it costs to attend such schools around here, I will take AP expansion in publics. AP standards are better than no standard.
  3. Mine just snagged the very last ticket on the shuttle. I am breathing better. On the way back he will have to Uber.
  4. I am so sorry. Music makes things so much harder. We were told Blair only took two kids for my son’s instrument last year. With that in mind I can’t imagine how their ED1, ED2, and RD factor in. I am sorry. I still have PTSD from last year when my boy was applying and can’t breath when I think of next year. I am not sure how much I can take watching kids in pain.
  5. So 1.5 hours on the road plus 2 hour prior arrival is what you recommend? They are running a shuttle from campus but I am sure mine hasn’t bothered to check it. yes, the beautify of having lower divisions done, and being in an unpopular major is he hasn’t had a single hiccup with class selection. I am reading horror stories from parents whose kids can’t get required classes to start upper divisions.
  6. Mine needs to negotiate alone his way to the airport from campus. I just hope I see him on Wednesday night. He easily got into every class he wanted for next quarter. So far 🤞.
  7. Good luck!!!!! We will be in your shoes next year. 😉
  8. When are you going to know if he passes prescreen? 🤞
  9. At a public or private? I am attempting to understand what money actual buys at these schools.
  10. So mine has junior standing but none of the classes he wants that could benefit from the early first pass are available due to major related restrictions. So there is really no advantage to his standing (his major classes don’t fill anyway) since he has to wait for the second pass anyway for classes he wants outside of his direct major. It’s just such a bizarre system. I was particularly shocked not to have access to upper division math for physics majors at least not in first round of registration. I was curious if this was typical in private schools as I have a junior at home who will be applying next year. I really want to avoid this situation for him if I can.
  11. Mine got a vacuum cleaner he can’t put together to vacuum his filter. 😂 I say future in engineering won’t be a possibility for him.
  12. I am just curious how much resource management is happening in private universities. Is it typical to have classes restricted to only certain majors? Say only math majors can register for math and if there is leftover, others can fight for a spot no matter the class standing. I know certain majors you can’t ever touch (most engineering and computer science), but surprised it’s an issue even in areas like math. Or is this only happening on public universities? I haven’t myself attended a university (just a tiny LAC), so this is so new to me.
  13. In his field. In science it’s not uncommon to land in the lab over summer.
  14. And what makes me particularly mad is if your kid is a PS kid and he asks other public schools for a space for an exam his school doesn't offer, they all roll out the carpet. Ask me how I know! Meanwhile the same request from a homeschooler is a firm no.
  15. What? I thought we had until February/March to start looking
  16. My concern would be her ability to drive in a city. I don’t think getting lost is a problem nowadays since GPS can accurately navigate her to her destination. The problem is rural driving is so very different from a large city. That would be my primary concern. Three hours is still a reachable distance otherwise. If something were to happen, you can get to her.
  17. I basically told mine that if he is going somewhere, somebody should know. Let your friend know so if something happens, somebody would know to look for you. Now that I am thinking about it, enabling tracking while on a hike or in the city late at night might be another way to let others help find you if you go missing. Emergencies happen.
  18. There is nothing to give or take. Kids will have the relationships they want. If you come from a close culture where multigenerational fun is norm and you are very close to your kid, your parent, your cousin, your neighbor….., it’s natural they want to stay part of your life. It’s shocking to me reading some of the comments, but I understand there are significant cultural differences that determine relationships. It’s not a judgement on cultural norms. yea, phone tracking is weird.
  19. I talk to my mom every single morning. 😂 We are communal people. 😂😂😂 i noticed the same from my niece when she was visiting. Phones made it so that nobody feels isolated. She was part of every “happening” back home by the virtue of video calling. They had a party, we dialed in. My kid calls me after every physics class to explain to me what mind blowing equation they just solved in the class. I am the only one who pretends to really understand what he is saying and attempts to share his enthusiasm for out of this world math. 😉 It’s a connected world. I love it.
  20. Yea, we don’t track the phone either. I could see if one lives in a dangerous city to have that enabled for emergencies, but luckily mine isn’t in a dangerous location.
  21. No, I find it odd that one would go with interacting with a kid daily while they live with you to “off you go to college, you are an adult.” In my culture we interact and check on each other daily no matter the age. We are all extremely close. We talk to our parents daily.
  22. So mine seems fairly content with his life. He doesn’t find college to be particularly challenging. Nothing like what I put him through in high school it seems. 😂
  23. Well, while looking for vacuums, I found the most adorable fridge. It’s soooo cute! He doesn’t want it. I have been trying to change his mind. I really want to buy it but have no use for it otherwise. https://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-EFMIS129-WHITE-Beverage-Cooler-White/dp/B08B43MJG3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=LKDI7ISZ6IIV&keywords=micro+fridge&qid=1696871953&sprefix=micro+fridge%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1
