  1. My daughter has a written expression diagnosis as well as language impairment. We used Diana Hansbury Kings Writing Skills Series during the Middle School years. In addition ..can I suggest REWARDS Secondary..it will help with reading skills as well as there is a writing component with the reading comprehension questions. It was a great skill builder we used over this past summer (she is 16). My daughter was given an assistive technology evaluation. We have her doing her lengthy responses on the chrome book. Her programs give her graphic organizers, word prediction, spell check and grammar helps. This years and next years goal is for her to consistently use the text to speech feature so she doesn't rely on me to read and help her edit. When she reads what she writes..it sound fine to her. When I read it aloud...she catches the grammatical error/syntax issues etc. When the computer reads it to her ..she also can catch some errors..so for independence purposes..I am getting her to work on that. My friend's son is very severe with his dysgraphia..he does all his writing on the computer..he is being taught how to scan forms etc. These are the skills he should be learning ...how to accommodate his disability and be able to communicate or complete forms etc. I would strongly urge you to get your child evaluated through insurance..a local State University ..anywhere to get him diagnosed within the next year or so..for testing accommodations.
  2. I have dry eye..I am getting the most relief using Theratears ..eye nutrition (fish oil flaxseed oil).
  3. I had one in speech (private and school based) for 9 years and another for two years . Really depends on the issues and severity.
  4. Can you clarify something for me..is the OT and the developmental optometrist the one and the same person you are speaking about that gave your child that "alphabet' quiz?
  5. This was my daughter. She has CAPD and is language impaired. It takes more time to develop phonemic awareness and sound symbol skills. Keep at it..we used Earobics for years, LiPS and Orton Gillingham reading material. She is now 16..I still work on her reading and managing her APD but she has come a long way. She was officially diagnosed at age 7as CAPD (also apraxia of speech) by SLP/Audiologist. A Neuropsych confirmed that at age 12 where they usually say Add..she said hers was auditory ..as well as other issues. Have her work with a SLP. My daughter struggled with reading and taking directions. You need to add a visual piece to help with learning. Lots of repetition etc.. I loved the input our OT gave in regards to my child.
  6. Look into REWARDS from Sopris West. It is a multisyllabic word reading strategy program that reviews vowel sounds, vowel teams and breaking apart the words. The overt and covert strategies encourages the reader to look at the parts. It also has vocabulary and spelling built in. The secondary program has comprehension questions and some I did orally..others I had my child write an essay type answer. For dysgraphia..teach her to type and if her writing skills are weak..look in Diana Lansbury Kings Writing Skills series. I also like Apples and Pears for spelling..that will also re-inforce multisyllabic word reading..looking at parts and not just whole. You can do a placement test.
  7. I hope you are feeling better! I also have had reactions to Avalox and the side effects can get worse after having been on these types of antibiotics before. I was on Cipro twice over the past 17 years, avalox (for a few days a number of years ago and then last year where I lasted one day before my body started to seem like it was shutting down. For the future please make sure your pharmacist as well as your doctors are aware that you can not take drugs in the floroquinilone family. I was put on an oxiflacinn- an eye drop last month and had a reaction. Had no idea it was in the same family and I did let that office know my allergies to Avalox . Read up on this class of drug. Many pharmacists say this should be a last resort drug prescribed and many people are experiencing bad side effects.
  8. You and your family are a special kind of wonderful. You are too humble.
  9. Do you have a copy of these evaluation reports? Do you understand these reports and the scoring? Check out the subscores for each of these tests. What was his processing speed like on his WISC (as well as working memory) Schools can not diagnose only doctors or neuropsychologists for example. Under IDEA, you can disagree with their evaluation and ask for an Independent Educational Evaluation at district expense.
  10. I use it for heartburn. I found it helps keep weight off. I make garlic tea regularly now with honey and lemon as a natural decongestant.
  11. My neuropsychologist recommended a fluency program like READ Naturally also (we are were doing straight O-G). We had used the I SEE SAM books for fluency work and then moved to the SIX Minute Solution by Sopris West (instead of READ Naturally). I did that with their REWARDS Program which also incorporates fluency work with multisyllabic word reading strategies.
  12. Assistive technology, accommodations like extra time and test read etc. has enabled my child to access the general ed curriculum. She will attempt community college at her pace and in her good time! and if not, she will get good job training.
  13. Neuropsychological Evaluation would be your best bet. I am on my third (out of 8 kids ) with a reading challenge. Evaluation lets you know what their glitch is and the best way to remediate. Recipe for Reading is an inexpensive manual (Orton Gillingham) that breaks the reading process down for struggling readers. I combine that with I See SAM readers for fluency. I moved to REWARDS to help with multisyllabic word reading strategies and Six Minute Solution for fluency. One of my kids needed LiPs.
  14. I was on Pantaprazole 20 mg and it took me 6 weeks to wean off. I think the first week was a full dose one day and 1/2 a dose the next, 2nd week was a full dose every third day and 1/2 the rest, third week was 1/2 a dose , 4th week was every other day 1/2 dose and 5th week was every third day etc. I also started taking Braggs apple cider vinegar every day in the morning, a good probiotic (Florastor daily) and didn't eat after dinner. When needed I took Tums. In addition, I have a small hiatel hernia, so every morning I do exercise/movement to get my hernia down before eating breakfast. I was experiencing many odd medical issues and didn't realize they were associated with the antacid medicine. Now one year off of them and some other allergy medicines, I feel back to normal. My husband, fellow workers and neighbors have all weaned themselves off the PPI. The gastroentologists now say they are only a short term use drug for healing purposes. Ideally you are to change your diet and lifestyle.
  15. My DD did really well with REWARDS also and we find Apples and Pears a great complement. She is 15 and on the last book of the series.
  16. Add garlic to it ..make garlic tea by boiling garlic in the water. Then add honey and lemon juice, strain, and sip throughout the day.
  17. Efferdent or any type of denture cleaner tablet...like others said .
  18. Isn't unbelievable what the right accommodations can do!
  19. I used Recipe for Reading (an O-G manual) and moved ahead with the reading. We use Apple and Pears to help remediate her spelling.
  20. I have children with APD, language impairment, dyspraxia, apraxia of speech and dyslexia ...one very severe. I have relied on O-G based reading programs like Writing Road to Reading and Recipe for Reading to help with explicit instruction. LiPs and speech therapists and programs like Earobics to help them hear and form the sounds. I See Sam readers (early grades), REWARDS and Six Minute Solution for fluency work. Apples and Pears for my most severe child for spelling, punctuation and capitalization issues.
  21. garlic tea...boil 3 to 5 cloves cut in half in 3 cups water. Turn off heat and add 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup lemon juice. Strain. Sip 1/2 a cup three times a day. Store in fridge.
  22. We saw a pediatric neurologist. They can diagnose motor planning issues like dyspraxia etc and rule out other neurological issues. It was one stop among many to fill the file.
  23. http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/tests.evals.crabtree.htm Also read about evaluations and testing on Wright's law. Were you given a copy of the reports prior to meeting? Please read the above. What State are you in and please check your own state education laws? You may have even more protection. I believe you have every right to get an independent evaluation through the school district.
