  1. A friend is currently blogging how his home schooled kids skipped from 8th grade to college starting here: http://chapmankids.net/blog/2013/03/16/why-not-skip-high-school-introduction/
  2. Has anyone read this book or listened to it on audio? We love the game, and one of the kids wanted to read the book, but I can find no reviews that discuss the book as far as suitability for kids...so I'm turning to the all-knowing Hive! Thanks.
  3. No one has mentioned parasites? Besides stomach ache, other sign of parasites are: grinding their teeth in their sleep waking between 1-3am diarrhea itching bottom nausea after eating/drinking etc, etc. Even though it's not as prevalent in our country as some countries where the water isn't clean/safe, kids ARE more susceptible to parasites because their stomach acid isn't strong enough to kill the parasites. If you have animals in your home, live on a farm where the kids run barefoot, your kid has a sleep over with someone who has parasites, swim in a pool that's contaminated, don't wash their hands good enough, or even eating peanut butter, or a whole host of other ways, your kids can get parasites! Sorry to bring it up, gross I know!
  4. Sometimes my kids could do it in 30 minutes (which is what I had scheduled) and over 1 hour when we hit some of the later lessons about footnotes, etc. We actually have ended up spreading WWS over 2 years...not my plan, but I remember SWB saying the kids should be ready for college writing after the WWS series, so what's the hurry? This way we won't need the books before they are published.
  5. I thought Daily Grammar looked good too. It was one of my 2nd choices along with Growing With Grammar and KISS. But nothing compared with ALL...sigh!
  6. So if you finished FLL4, what are you going to do now? Our previous plan was to go on to ALL, but now having spent the summer looking at different language arts programs, I think we'll go on to Analytical Grammar with some independent memorization thrown in there too. What am I forgetting?
  7. My stuff isn't selling too good either...and I need the cash before I buy items off my list. Sort of a catch 22.
  8. I noticed on the resource page of WTM that there is a list of business owners, so you could see about being posted there. That said, there are a lot of us who sell on Etsy or other place as (very) small businesses...ie. not big enough to have a website, and I think that's what this thread is all about. My daughters each have etsy shops: http://www.anacreate.etsy.com http://www.shutterdot.etsy.com http://www.bewitchyourself.etsy.com
  9. :iagree: I came on here to research something....what was it now?
  10. Amen! I needed this post because I've been fighting authority with ebay and Paypal lately. :banghead:
  11. I'll teach a course in how to best use your time to research and discard curriculum, research and discard books, research and discard apps, research and discard....you name it!
  12. Like these posters, it was when I was going to get my teaching degree that I decided I would never put my future kids through public/government school and would someday homeschool them!
  13. I am not an oldest. My oldest is 13.5. I know what you mean about the kind of kids you mentioned...maybe I'm trying to make sure my kids aren't like that! But I think my kids would pick up on an annoyed Mom saying something like you mentioned to them. The cousin running away in the parking lot is 6. The younger friend is 9 (but with mental/social issues that render her about 5.) The 3rd incident that I didn't mention was my mother...but didn't want to get into all that!
  14. :iagree: And (dare I say it?) sometimes critical responses to one's posts on this board make one feel even more isolated and alone.
  15. Thank You! This is what I needed to hear. I do care too much about other's opinions!
  16. Thanks! This is the part that I was wondering about...because the 3 people who told me this use public schools. Perhaps in public schools, kids do not correct/instruct other kids and so to see a "queen bee" who does seems bossy. And sometimes I do think they are not very good at ignoring others social foibles. Great point...my kids to play this way (MY way) with their siblings, but not with other kids. They are usually leading the game, but not bossing it. And the cousin's mother was being very inattentive...insomuch that my kids were concerned for their cousin's safety. So the mother wanted my kids to babysit for free in public, but according to her ideas. I've noticed that mothers of public schooled kids are less attached to/concerned about their kids...they are not responsible for their kids safety/education 8 hours of the day. (I'm sure I've just opened up a can of worms!) Great suggestions, I'll pass them on to my kids. I grew up with those rules too, but sometimes felt stifled...guess I need to work on soft too! I guess this is why I got defensive...I felt my kids were trying to help!
  17. Nope. Just seems like asking for trouble to take a WELL baby to a doctor. We rely on preventative measures.
  18. Thanks! Great and helpful review.
  19. Because you just had a baby, I would suggest you just take some time to rest and recuperate. Then after you are feeling refreshed, start planning! You've received some good suggestions. I'd add that if you begin your/their day with some physical activity...they'll be energized for more things, and (hopefully) they won't WANT to lay around. Try 30 minutes of anything that gets their hearts pumping...and see what happens!
