  1. Thank You for the feedback! I was thinking about rolling the flour tortillas last night, and while I could do it, I thought that if I got the press, the CHILDREN could make the tortillas. ;) One press, One cook. Corn tortillas are definitely not out of the picture either, I just haven't found a recipe yet. I would love to find some Non-GMO cornmeal. I think I will look up some ethnic grocery stores in the area and see what they have as far as presses.
  2. When MIL died, I bought dresses for them to wear, but I wore my usual; Black jeans and one of my nicer sweaters. Now, when I say black jeans, they are deep dyed(?) and are solid black, not black stone-wash. You might not even know they were jeans. I have a khaki pair too, and I rotate them for church. DH is an introvert, so we don't attend weddings anyway. Borrowing clothes would be a great idea, but I'm at the upper curve of the weight scale, and there's not a lot of people around here in my size. Our church is casual, and I am teaching my girls to dress appropriately. They wear clean clothes. If they wear shorts, they wear knee length ones. And in the winter, they wear leggings with a long top. If they choose to wear jeans, they wear clean ones with no tears, and again, a nice shirt or sweater.
  3. So, I want to make tortillas for our family. We eat them by the dozen, and the ones we buy are so full of carp and words we cannot pronounce. In addition, I can make them for pennies, if I had a press. What kind of press do I want? None jump out as superb on Amazon. I'd really like to find one made in Mexico, as I think those would probably be pretty darn good.
  4. The testing is not bad. A lot of co-ops in our area have group testing. We did the CAT test from Seton, while eating lunch at Wendy's ;) I usually do the testing in early May and get my stuff sent in as soon as I get the results back. The form is easy too. I consider Ohio to be an easy state. You can also do a portfolio assessment. Most co-ops have a few names of certified teachers who will review and sign off on it.
  5. While I understand how it can sound like tattling, I am glad that I heard this info. for some reason, it never occurred to me that Wiki would have porn on it. I can understand anatomical pics, but some of the things I saw in their most frequently viewed are NOT just Anatomy and Physiology. I guess I sort of viewed wikipedia as the old encyclopedias. And while my DD have had access and used wikipedia, I still have been in the same room, usually watching from behind them. I guess now I need to know exactly what they are looking up and see if I can make out any porn or slang of it before they actually look it up (you know, like that sporting goods store).
  6. I HATE reading aloud. But I'm really good at it. But I HATE it! I read science and history 3-4/wk and that's it. I'm suppose to be reading Paddle to the Sea and Tree in the Trail. In fact, we're halfway through both, and then they just fell off the radar. Part of the problem is my ADD. I know that. But I do not like reading aloud.
  7. Thank you all for your input! I was thinking the closer one, but I just wasn't sure about long term stuff. I saw this, and then DH said 'heck, when we were in school we changed teachers every year, remember?' I said barely, but then started making arrangements for the closer tutor! I am so excited that I have one less trip this year. (OK, it is still a trip, since we can't walk becuase of the country road, but it is a 3 minute drive, as opposed to a 30 minute drive, and I can easily come home and do laundry or cook or some other bizarre thing).
  8. I have 2 Latin tutors that I am considering. Tutor 1: Close to home. Daughter could WALK to her place, or possibly the tutor will come to our house. Problem: She is probably not going to be tutoring after this year. Tutor 2: About 20-30 minutes away, depending on traffic. Will be tutoring for several years. Both are Latin teachers, both are female (not really an issues, but it might be for some people). And they both come with high recommendations.
  9. I didn't even do that! My kids were created by someone else! And that truly indicates my creativity!!!!!! We do whatever the textbook tells us to do. we are doing a lapbook, sort of, for science this year. We do not do experiments because of my sensory child. They are taking writing and lit through the co-op because I can have them read it, and I can ask them who the characters are, but analyzing it is just beyond me. Unless I have a list of questions. Heck, I sometimes have trouble with sentences for spelling words. :001_huh: Write it out in black and white. Or I get befuddled.
  10. Put them in an insulated mug with a lid. My sensory child couldn't stand the COLOR. Also, it all depends on the teeth, as to the number of stitches and recovery time. My daughter had 4 baby teeth pulled by an oral surgeon. It was baby teeth though. She came home and rested for the day and was eating cautiously the next day. The next day she was fine. This was 4 baby teeth that were NOT coming out and we had to get them pulled so we could move ahead with braces. I don't know how old your son is. From his size, I assume he's a bit older than DD was. Hope things go smoothly.
  11. Yes, they are both 100% Asian. Dh and I are as American as you can get. :D
  12. For me, break checking is just tapping the brakes enough that the lights blink. I do NOT slow down. It's actually no different then a two footed driver with their foot constantly on the brake.
  13. I do that too. sometimes they'll back off a bit, I've had a couple put their brights on. Didn't matter really, I couldn't see their headlights anyway. :) I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Twice I was called because my mom was not answering her phone. One time she had fallen and broken her hip. The other time she was passed out and near death (body temp was 93). And I have one friend whose daughter was having seizures and the EMT dilly dallied (according to her DH) too much. By the time they got to the ER the seizures were done. So twice, he drove them to the hospital. Passing every car and running every light. The ER got to see her seizures and were able to move forward with treatment. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. But some people are just jerks.
  14. OK, in defense of men, my DH does the shopping and always does a great job. If anything, he comes home with extra teats. Not a ton, but each girl picks out a box of cereal, or something like that.
  15. This is what I was thinking. Imagine if he just showed at Thanksgiving and introduced his 'new' wife. Everybody has time to mull over the announcement, so the ensuing phone calls and family gatherings won't be quite as shocking.
  16. I would never wear closed toed shoes if I lived in an area like that.
  17. We always do this because our kids don't 'match' us. :D But nobody has ever asked for any ID. They say hi to the kids, ask their names and where they're going. Aside from that, no problems.
  18. I'm glad I can cook. I wish I knew how to organize, minimalize, simplify, and all that stuff that keeps a house halfway clean.
  19. I KNOW you aren't kidding. I use to hear that stuff re: depression and anxiety. I always thought the person telling me was the one with the problems. But now that I have a child with depression and anxiety, who was diagnosed at *8* yrs old, I KNOW that those people are crazy. Depression and anxiety CAN be 'spiritual' issues, but NOT always. And people need to keep their traps shut. Unless they have BTDT and can offer productive help.
