  1. Pamela, from the article it sounds like it is the foster children who were removed from the home. There were either twelve or thirteen children in the home, including two biological and three adopted. If seven children were removed, I am guessing that the biological and adopted children were the ones not removed. I am sure this is a stressful time for all the children involved. If the removal was not in line with the relevant laws and the best interests of the children I hope that will all come out in the next hearing and that those involved will not misuse their authority in the future. I hate to see kids caught in the middle. I can't see that we know enough to really judge the merits of this case, so I will wait and see what the legal process determines. ETA looks like my assumption was wrong, more information below.
  2. My husband will not take it if he is feeling angry, he feels he needs to repent and make his own heart right first. I can't remember feeling the need not to take it myself for such reasons but I tend to not stay upset about things for more than a few minutes. We are LDS.
  3. Don't most states require children in the foster care system to be enrolled in public school? Is Texas different? Or does it make a difference that the children were placed through a private agency not the state?
  4. If it was foster children removed, I think the action was reasonable. Foster families should be held to higher standards than natural families. If a child is removed from their own home because of abuse or neglect, there needs to be some assurance that the home they are going to is a better situation than the one they are being removed from. I would expect CPS (or its equivalent) to be quicker to remove children from a foster placement than from a permanent family situation. ETA: I was wrong, the family's biological and adopted children were removed.
  5. Love this! I admit that though I think Elvis are awesome we own only diplomas. Ok, I looked back at what autocorrect did to that last sentence and it made me laugh so I'm going to leave it there. As I was saying, legos (this thing tried to change that to Elvis again...) are great, but I just don't feel up to wrangling 20,000 tiny pieces not to mention worrying about choking hazards so we have stuck with duplos. My eight year old combines them with magnatiles to make some pretty amazing creations, mostly boats and aircraft. The magnatiles can be stuck vertically between the bumps on the duplos, he uses them for tail fins, sails, etc. We don't organize the duplos, they're just in two big storage bins.
  6. Do you have teacher certification? Does your state have online or other hybrid charter/homeschool programs? I have known moms who homeschooled while working for such programs.
  7. Math mammoth Fluenz Chinese Elementary Greek Journal writing and individual reading list for language arts I think that she works independently just because that is her personality, not necessarily because of curricula chosen.
  8. Interesting article. I wonder what other universities facing similar issues are doing?
  9. Congratulations to your son! A friend of mine recently had surgery for a brain tumor, and ended up with some serious complications; things were touch and go for several weeks actually, but she is on her way to a full recovery now. I understand being somewhat relieved to not be facing surgery at this point, and will pray that you get the very best of medical advice and treatment.
  10. I would complain. I had a doctor do something once that was emotionally traumatic, and I figured if I didn't do something this doctor would keep treating other patients that way. This was at a military clinic so I wrote a detailed letter to the medical unit commander. I'm not sure if your doctor has someone overseeing them, if so I would write a letter to the doctor and cc that person, if not I would just write a letter to the doctor. The tone of the letter would depend largely on whether I wanted to continue a relationship with this doctor. In either case, however, I would call them out on the extreme inappropriateness of making such comments in front of a child. They would be inappropriate even if not wildly inaccurate.
  11. Thanks for taking the time to share all this information Matt. I don't have much experience with wind instruments so this is helpful.
  12. Thank you for the responses everyone. We talked to the folks at the music store and they recommended recorder, I have some Yamaha recorders and the nine note recorder book. I found Recorder Karate (someone mentioned this) here http://www.recorderdojo.com/ and it looks good. I admit that I picked up cards for oboe and saxophone and French Horn teachers at the music store...
  13. Wow, I haven't seen young children playing the trumpet etc., glad to know it is possible. He would probably like that, don't know if my ears want to hear it (my sister played French horn for a time and I remember when she was just getting started it sounded something like a dying elephant).
  14. One of my brothers read ridiculously fast, at a high level, from a very young age. My parents didn't believe he was really reading whole books until they started asking questions to check his knowledge/comprehension and sure enough he could answer them. It seemed that he took in a whole page at a time rather than my one-word-at-a-time approach to reading. He has a nearly photographic memory, maybe the two are somehow related? If you are concerned you could occasionally have him read out loud. Maybe he would read books to the two year old?
  15. I seriously considered school for one of my children this year. We ended up with a different choice but it's still a possibility for the future.
  16. OK, I will take him to the music store this week and see if he can try some things. If he is OK with recorder we can go that way , I'm not sure he sees recorder as a real instrument. That's why I was wondering if alto recorder would be better as there are so many toy-like soprano recorders around.
  17. Languages. I'm trying to learn Chinese and Arabic alongside my kids. I would also love to learn Welsh, Hindi, Korean, Russian, oh, all of them.
  18. My 8 year old is asking for a third instrument; he has been playing piano and cello for about a year and a half. Both his sisters have three instruments (violin, viola and piano for one, violin, harp and piano for the other) and he wants three too. He wants a wind instrument. Is there something that would be good for this age? My experience is mostly with strings (I played flute for two years in high school, but I don't think he wants to play flute), and I know wind instruments don't have fractional sizes like violins and cellos. We have recorders, penny whistles, and a couple of fifes--should I just teach him to play those for now? Maybe get him an alto recorder? My husband has a trombone, but I'm pretty sure he's too young/small for that. Can young kids learn brass instruments? Aside from arm length issues I wonder about lung capacity. I love the sound of the oboe but hear it is difficult to learn--is there a good beginner instrument that could later lead into playing something like oboe or bassoon? I'm really hoping he would continue to put most of his energy into cello for now, but he has brought this issue up several times recently so I need to come up with something.
  19. Can you tell me more about this? I recently had my kids tested through the school and would like to have some further testing done (I really question the validity of one of the tests).
  20. Our gymnastics gym requires one month's tuition from the time you give notice that you are leaving. I think it is fairly common.
  21. There was shift around puberty, I remember being kind of puzzled by the fact that I didn't want to play as much/the same way I used to. I didn't leave things behind entirely though.
  22. I've been thinking of you welovetoread. I have three brothers in law (married to my sisters) who are all converts to the church and I know they have had challenges along the way, especially those without family support. I hope that this Conference is a blessing to you and your family; for me General Conference is often a time of renewed testimony and increased spiritual understanding. I remember as a teenager watching conference one year and being deeply impacted by the sense when the apostles were speaking that these were messengers from God and were speaking truth. Conference time always reminds me of that. Sending thoughts and prayers your way that you can find increased peace and understanding through General Conference.
