  1. I don't really have any advice, I am not naturally a people pleaser and I also tend to be oblivious to a lot of what goes on around me so I can't say I've struggled much with similar issues, I just wanted to send you a hug of support and I hope you can find a way to set comfortable boundaries for yourself in going back to church. I'm sorry things have been so hard!

  2. So the new diagnosis is olecranon abscess, per BIL and confirmed by the new dr. today. He drained the abscess and prescribed a different antibiotic, there is still a possibility of needing hospitalization etc. but at least we're on a more proactive course.

  3. I have a very auditory dd8 who is interested in foreign languages.  She tried Latin and really wanted it to work, but she just couldn't handle the written work that is necessary for Latin.  We had a great time doing it orally, but I just didn't see how we could keep going with it without substantial tweaking from me.

I have been looking at the Pimsleur and Michel Thomas language programs for her, probably for Spanish since I have a background in Spanish.  Either way, I think she would love it.  From the samples, Michel Thomas is more conversational in his approach, making it easier to listen to.  But I am bothered by the French accent.  Pimsleur seems clearer, but more academic.  I was wondering if anyone can compare/contrast these two programs.

We have been using Michel Thomas for a few months, though I haven't used very much of the Spanish program (I am trying to teach multiple languages at the same time, the jury's still out on whether that is a wise undertaking!)

With regard to the accent, it doesn't sound French to me but it is Spain pronunciation not Latin American. We do Michel Thomas as a group, I think it helps that they have actual students on the CD giving responses as it feels more like being in a class with other learners and helps the kids feel comfortable giving their own responses.

  4. I did PL orally with dd8 last year.  She would have withered away if I had made her do the worksheets.  She did really enjoy it orally.  I have put Latin away for later, as I am thinking it will be a better fit for my ds5 when he is old enough.  In the meantime, I am looking at a modern language program that can be studied for conversation instead of for reading, writing and translating.  (Currently looking at Pimsleur and Michel Thomas programs.)  We will save formal language studies for when she can better handle the drudgery of written work.

I am waiting on Latin as well, I favoring studying a conversational language first as the formal study of Latin seems better suited to the abilities of a more mature student. I'll put in a plug for Michel Thomas--we have three of his programs (Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin) and I really like them. I've used Pimsleur myself in the past, but was somewhat turned off by the first few lessons that seemed to be focused on how to order beer...(maybe that was just the language I was studying though).

  5. I talked to BIL on the phone (ER doc) and emailed some pictures, waiting to hear back from him. I'm not jumping to go to the ER tonight unless he tells me to, since that would involve packing up 5 tired kids and taking them as well.

Feeling frustrated that he has been to the same doctor three times and the dr. hasn't tried anything different...will definitely be seeing a different dr. at least tomorrow.

I appreciate the experience and advice, I will keep you posted.

  6. My husband woke up last Wednesday morning with a sharp pain in his elbow, which was somewhat swollen. He went to the Dr. that afternoon, by which time the swelling had increased considerably and the area around the elbow was very red and inflamed looking, within about a six inch diameter. Dr. said it was an infection, and gave him both an antibiotic injection and a prescription for antibiotics to take 4 times a day.

It's been a week, and while he has continued to make follow-up visits to the dr. and to take the antibiotics faithfully, his entire forearm is now swollen. The nurse mentioned cellulitis, the dr. has just continued to call it an infection without being more specific.

I'm worried that this is not improving with treatment. We're going to try to get him to another dr. for a second opinion tomorrow.

Has anyone experienced something like this? I'm hoping the Hive has some wisdom to share!

  7. Unfortunately its not free on Amazon for the kindle.  Bummer.

  9. Hormones may make your nipples tender, it helps if I have something to distract me (a book to read, a video on the kindle, etc.) Milk supply will most likely decrease, for some women it dries up completely. Expect to compensate by feeding more solid foods, especially before bedtime or your little one may want to nurse all night.

I've nursed through part or all of four pregnancies, and tandem nursed twice. It is quite a commitment, but so comforting for the little ones. My oldest used to reach across and hold her baby brother's hand while they both nursed.

    Congratulations on the pregnancy!

  10. Thank you!

I do have the Key to Fraction workbooks, I think we used the first one some time ago, I'll go pull those out they may be good to use on the side until we get to fraction part of MM6. I'm glad to know this will all be covered again.

  11. DD10 has just finished the fractions section of MM5B (original light blue series). She will be working through the geometry section then going on to MM6A. She's done well with 5B but I don't think her understanding of operations with fractions is really solid. Will this all be covered again in MM6? Alternatively, is there another resource I could have her work through on the side to make sure she really understands these operations?

  12. But again, this is totally biased information in favor of the family. Of course a "Support the Tutts" FB page is going to present them in the best possible light.

I still think there is far more to this story than the Tutt family and their supporters would like us to believe.

It is, which is why I leave open the possibility that there is significant missing information that would justify removing the children.

ETA I quoted this as a source of information that negates my prior assumption that it was foster children who were removed from the home. I see no reason to doubt the accuracy of the information it provides regarding which children were removed.

  13. I found the following description of events on a facebook page "Support the Tutts" this changes my opinion significantly. I had assumed from the article that it was foster children who were removed from the home. Apparently it is the family's own children who were removed, the foster children were there on temporary placement and had already moved on when these events took place.

Unless the events as described are egregiously erroneous or leaving out very significant issues, I now believe the actions of CPS and the judge are, in fact, illegal. I cannot see from the information given that the children were at any immediate risk such as would warrant removal from the home.

I'll be interested to see what comes of this.

That is the rule for a CPS licensed foster family. Their rule for CPS group homes is higher. Each county has different rules on this. The Tutt were not a CPS foster family at the time of this incident, however. They had children placed with them short term by a non profit ministry that works with at risk families and directly with CPS. At the time the CPS caseworker first came (Sept. 21) there were 13 children in the home ranging from 18 months to 14 years. The CPS worker did nothing to remove any of them from the home and, as you see in the article, stated "there is no problem here." All 13 children were left in place by the CPS caseworker. During the natural course of things, common with short term care placements, the sibling group was returned to their mother, and the other child who had been placed there as a kinship placement by CPS of Tarrant County was moved into CPS foster care. The additional children moving on was in no way related to the incident of September 21st and happened in stages over the following weeks. The caseworker returned to the home on the 31st of October and was fully aware there were only 7 children in the home. The children in the home were the Tutt's children, 2 bio, 3 adopted, 2 in the process of private adoption. None of the 6 "additional" children in the home were there inappropriately or without legal paperwork and were there with full CPS awareness. Even if the number of the children had been excessive, that does not meet the Texas Family Code definition for imminent threat of harm required for a removal such as the one that occurred. CPS would simply have removed the excess children and left the Tutt children in place.
