It's getting ugly out! Last night I took pictures from my backyard of a tornado north of us. We can see for miles from on top of our hill. I hope that we don't have another close call today. Hunkered down and watching for Gary... Be safe!

I also just started homeschooling. My boys are 11 and 13. The biggest struggle so far has been keeping them on task. Maintaining a schedule is difficult. I am thinking about painting a wall with chalkboard paint just to have a visual reminder/schedule. I haven’t fixed my hair in a week….LOL

I want to hug you. I just went through all of this with my DS 13. The diagnosis was a relief, oddly enough. The label wasn’t a relief but being able to identify how he is wired and having an understanding, was a burden lifted. His depression and the constant bullying at PS is the reason I am now a homeschooling mom. I am glad to hear that her school is being open and helpful. That isn’t always the case, sadly. Now our adventure begins…

Thank you for passing on the recommendation. I have yet to explain the how and whys to my 12 yr old ds other than telling him he is wired better. He was just recently diagnosed with Asperger’s, though he has been labeled in PS as learning disabled since he was 3. This book will probably benefit my entire family. I will definitely add this book to my cart!

I am new as well and had a question much like yours. I wish I had seen this post prior to my post. The responses you are getting are phenomenal. Thanks to all that have responded here! You have answered many of my questions in regard to curriculum for my 12 yr old Aspie. MUS was recommended to me in my post, but I haven’t tried it yet. I was leaning towards Systematic math for both my special needs boys. I thought about Saxon but after trying the spiral method with my aspie for the last couple of weeks, I think I will go with something like Systematic Math or MUS. If he doesn’t understand something and moves on to something else, he retains very little. Plus, the visual (sans the textbook) and auditory lessons are more his style. Luckily I found some curriculum listed in my local classifieds. I was able to try a couple of styles without spending a lot. Now I just need to find the best fit for math. I am new to The Well-Trained Mind and I am new to homeschooling. I thought this would be a great place to ask for advice. I have two boys that have been in PS since they were 3. They have been on an IEP their entire school career. I won’t rant about how I assumed that because the PS “team†was nice and showed me dibble scores every year, they MUST be doing things right for my boys. I became aware… then I became proactive in my boys’ education. I just fired PS. I am trying to find the best math methodology for each child. My 12 year old has Asperger’s & ADHD inattentive with a high/average IQ. He does not do well with divided attention. I was leaning toward Saxon Math. Any thoughts? My 11 year old is ADHD combined, hyperactive dominant. He thrives with sustained and divided attention and sustained attention (TEA-Ch subtest Sky Search 15 and Score DT 16). His WISC-IV perceptual reasoning score is 133. Math is his strong suit. I think he would be bored with a spiral (& textbook) style of learning math. For him, I was leaning towards Systematic Mathematics. Is there a math curriculum that would suit him better? Thanks in advance! :bigear:
