  2. It's out of print but I found one used on amazon........."When are we ever gonna have to use this?" by Hal Saunders/Dale Seymour Publications filled with word problems from Basic Math, Pre Alg,Geom, Trig, and other math related areas, we've found it helpful, HTH emily
  3. we did similiar, we did BJU with 10th and 5th grader last year, just didn't expect as much from the 5th grader: 2 projects - travel brochure on a country of their choosing, and made up a country with all the geographical terms and seperate maps (population, climate, topography, ect) for their made up islands; each section of the book has a reading that ends with section review questions: usually 2-8 pages, a chapter review at the end of each and a test: we picked several of the different activity pages that went with each chapter as I saw fit and it filled in the year and we completed it. 5th grader learned alot, don't know how much he grasped it all as far as specific details but he also learned all the geography songs from a program we had left over from sonlight many years ago to supplement. 10th grader did well with it and retained alot, he did his mostly independently. 5. we also enjoyed the teaching companies history dvd's with Lynwood Thompson I think it is. watch the site for a sale, they're always running them and our public library system also has them for checking out. Emily
  6. We've done Geography and now are doing World History, and plans for US next year. Wasn't my original plan, we've used TOG(older version), Notgrass, Sonlight....yep a curriculum junkie. Our middle son was just overwhelmed with all the readings, original resources and multiple sources to pull it all together was too much, and I loved all the books. So we switched to BJU with Geography and it went much smoother, no dvd's. I supplemented his literature with Sonlight, Notgrass and TOG recommendations and left him with only one text book ( the route I never thought we'd take in our journey) to get the overview and specifics. He's much happier with his history studies. Does much better on reading comprehension and seeing how it all fits together now. We just do a section on reading and answer the section review ?'s, do the worksheets with the lessons and spend a day on review/study guide and then a day for the test - when we planned it out it filled the year and if it was a lengthy reading then we split it into 2 days of reading. For science we do Apologia, though have friends who taught a coop class with BJU chemistry and also apologia and they much preferred the BJU text, done without the dvd classes. MFW uses BJU United States history for their 11th grade history spine. So it's doable. Probably more info than you needed. Emily

  9. a few years back that gave grammar/logic readings that could be done along with Apologia science's. Anyone got a clue as to how to find them again. It was in grid type format so that you could match up readings with younger students with older students using the Apologia Sciences. Thanks for any help in advance. Emily in IL
  10. we're using the companion as a guide for us, yes it is from a Christian PoV, biblical world view for essay/discussion questions. Some of his other programs are more in depth and specific genre courses, check out his website www.forsuchatimeasthis.com for more info on the courses. My friend and I work with the suggested literature, questions and then come up with an essay or project based on gathering info from sparknotes and cliffnotes sites. ie: 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea: I had my son do some geography - he mapped out on a world map all the places stopped at in the book using the coordinates given throughout of longitude/latitude and found some places and looked them up for further research. Also on the ocean life mentioned. The abridged version doesn't include all of those details btw
  11. Stobaugh - For Such a Time as This.com has several literature courses. My son and I, with another mom/son pair, have been going through his book "Reading Comprehension for 50 Classics" and have split it over 2 years. We read a new book every 2 weeks - which has pushed my nonreading son 8), then work on a paper/project to go with the book and go over vocabulary, comprehension questions, essay responses - we use cliffnotes.com and sparknotes.com to help us moms with writing assignments. It's working well so far for us. 15. dear son in CC is doing German with Rosetta Stone, self motivated, but his choice due to chemical engineering, many companies in Europe in the field and many are German and English speaking so he thought it would be more helpful in his field than the Spanish......though other son wants to be a landscaper and lawn maintenance company owner, so in our area....spanish is a must and it's even listed at the CC as a course for the lawn maintenance and contractor specific. Go with his interests and let him explore another language, it's fun as you all learn alongside each other and become multilingual families. Emily

  20. I know we all want our kids to be the best at everything and excel. But to what are we worried when comparing? JMTC..... The joy of homeschooling is being able to cater to the students needs and build from there. With math, some things catch on quick and some need more work to grasp the concept, but take it as they master it new concept and move to the next. Math is foundational so having their facts down is important. Usually they all tend to catch up at their own speeds as they grow. Enjoy your homeschooling adventure and don't worry about being "too" behind yet. Hope that encourages you. Emily
