  1. If you have used or looked at this geometry, I would like to know your opinion. My WTM search did not yield much, and some of the found threads are too old to access. P.S. Kolbe's online course is going to use it this year. http://www.kolbe.org/online-courses/course-offerings/2014-15-school-year/high-school/online-math-courses/wcm-geom/
  2. Perfect! August 11 is our first official day. We watch this program every single day - it is a big hit here. Mostly, we just watch it. But I do like the media literacy questions - sometimes we do those orally. Sometimes I will jot down vocab words on the lap-whiteboard as I hear them. Often, these are the specialized vocabulary of politics and economics. I try to minimize pausing the video, unless it is between segments. DS, on the other hand, pauses it quite a bit to ask questions. We also have a subscription to Newsademic. It comes every two weeks. I print it out, bind it with the pro-click and give it to DS. It has become his "morning newpaper." I find it to be a nice complement to CNN: (1) it is not American-centric (2) more science than CNN (3) the cover story is in depth.
  3. I would be fine with my son going to IB if I weren't so scared of the thought of moving mid-stream. Changing IB schools is harder than it should be, given that the program was initially intended to provide a standardized, globally available option for education.
  4. I remember reading (on a cruise forum maybe...not sure as it was over a year ago) that the annual fees alone were staggering. It is for sure for the super-wealthy.
  5. Perhaps I am the only one who will be excited about this, but I just found a textbook publisher's detailed scope and sequence pdf for Pre-IB. Actually it covers Years 6 through 10. http://www.haesemathematics.com.au/book.asp?book=scope-seq2 I might order the Pre-diploma book.
  6. Was this the ship? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_The_World I saw it docked at a small European port, and I could tell it was't a regular cruise ship so I looked it up. What a fascinating concept :)
  7. MarkT, when I said that the common core standards don't matter to me, I acknowledged the ACT/SAT impact. But I can't see why I would care if the common core puts a particular topic in Algebra 1 or 2 provided that we get it all done in time for the ACT/SAT. I think this would make an ok transcript: Math 1 (9th) Math 2. (10th) IB math 11th and 12th But I am not so sure about: Math 1 (9th) Math 2 (10th) Math 3 (11th) Calculus (12th)
  8. I would like to do a world tour, traveling around visiting my far-flung friends.
  9. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/506940-integrated-math/ Somehow I missed this helpful thread in my earlier search.
  10. Kate, I have been taking a deeper look at Clonlara, and we might switch to them for high school. Do you know if they accept outside coursework taken online from other providers?
  11. In the thread that wapiti linked, regentrude cautioned that only an exceptional student should be expected to get through the AoPS Intro to Algebra in one year. As I am not in the enviable position of some of you (doing Algebra before 8th grade), I can get nervous about using Aops and worrying about the pace. But if I take a deep breath and remember that the target we really need to hit is (1) ready for IB math by 11th or (2) ready for calculus in 12th then I think it will be ok. ETA: Common core standards don't much matter for me except for SAT/ACT impact.
  12. wapiti, I am planning to make a detailed comparison between the Aops beginning algebra book to Jacob's algebra, and make sure that we do indeed get to every standard algebra 1 topic in 8th. Maybe we will use Jacobs for some of those topics. I have already done a cursory comparison (functions come to mind), but inserting a bit of Jacobs just slows down Aops even more, and my son is not fast with math. I didn't explain all that, though. Don't kids forget every scrap of geometry and statistics with the standard US sequence?! That also concerns me. We did Geometry Fridays in 6th and 7th and it has been great.
  13. We live in Denmark, and integrated math is the norm. This statement presumes that I understand the term integrated math, and I am not certain that I truly do. IB math textbook TOCs look like what I would call integrated math. DS might want to take the IB diploma, and I want him to be prepared for that scenario. I hesitate to do anything on the transcript other than Geometry (9th) and Algebra 2 (10th), especially since IB is only a maybe. BUT we are going to use Aops Algebra this year (8th) and the idea of stopping the book before we are done then jumping to geometry for a year seems a bit nuts. He won't likely crank through the whole Aops algebra book in one year, and my understanding is that Algebra 1 is through chapter 15 or thereabouts. I am thinking about continuing to plug along in the sidelines a bit with geometry and statistics during 8th (algebra year) and then doing sidelines of algebra and stats during 10th (geometry year). Or am I oversimplifying the concept of integrated math?
  14. Makes perfect sense, and we have split our family up more than once in order to get everyone's ducks in a row. I just don't like it, and it has a way of getting expensive. My homeschool kid is going into 8th, and we will likely move back *sometime* during his high school years. It is SO hard to get the timing right on everything!
  15. I am not a fan of splitting up the family, unless it is just for a few months. One of our scenarios does just that, and I see it as a last resort. If I were enjoying Italy, I would probably ride it out and hope for the best. Things have a way of working out, and you sound like a good scenario-builder. You won't be caught unawares.
  16. I am in a kinda-sorta-but-not-corporate-instead-of-military situation. We have finished our obligatory (3 years) stay overseas, and moving back at various times involves various challenges and benefits. The mulling also keeps me sane, except when it me up at night:) I am not sure I completely understand you scenario. You will be there at least through 2016? Adding two more years gets you through 2018 and the oldest through high school? Or do I misunderstand? By paid trip back in 2016 do you mean a visit? If you mean that your move back would not be paid for, that sounds wicked expensive. How much do you like living in Italy? That would be a big factor for me:)
  17. Once we hit seventh grade overseas, I decided to register with a school. It was not necessary to do so in our case, but I really wanted the paper trail/ records in case we move again during high school. We use Kolbe Academy, FWIW.
  18. I realized in 7th grade that DS had never learned the capitals, so I made him an Anki deck. I think I added 10 states at a time. I have him review the deck for long term retention. Anki uses spaced repetition, so it is great for long term. We live overseas, so I need to be intentional about US geography. I also had him memorize the two letter postal codes. Sometimes I ask random, common knowledge questions. Where is Yosemite? What does "the four corners" refer to? Where are the Outer Banks?
  19. Iron Ethel Flint: No problem. I did not feel personally offended anyway. It is just that breast cancer risk factors are complex, and questions about my personal history (breastfeeding is just one example) never seemed like anything but a hope that I had a risk factor that the questioner did not have. If I had been older, someone who did not use estrogen would have probably said " Did you take HRT?" hoping that my answer would be yes. I certainly think that women should be proactive and lower disease risk factors if they can do so.
  20. Late to the thread... We are watching the final in Spain, at a beach town just outside of Barcelona. Messi shirts are all around town:) And we were in the Netherlands to see the Netherlands vs. Costa Rica. Enjoy!!
  21. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41. I am 50 now, and the chemo forced me into early menopause at age 41. There is no way that I would take estrogen, but I do worry about my bone density. I feel compelled to mention that many people said stupid things to me after my diagnosis, but one of the worst was " Did you breastfeed your kids?"
  22. This is so true. Some of my son's IB classmates were 16 years old and living on their own with no family in town.
  23. If we could go through just the second workbook for 8th grade, I think that I (ahem) need this one on my writing stack. The good news is that Amazon uk carried it. The bad news is that it is nearly twice the American price- boo on that.
