  1. My daughter is doing state testing this week so we've been at the public school each morning. I was not surprised to see several Muslim moms with hijabs dropping off their kids. I was also not surprised to see a few Muslim teachers with hijabs. There are a decent number of Muslims in our area and that doesn't phase me and I have no problem with that obviously. I say all of that to preface that I'm not anti-Muslim or anything. But I was surprised to see a teacher wearing a niqab. (Example here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=niqab) Would this bother you if your child's teacher wore a niqab? Would it be none of your business? This is a public elementary school in Florida if that helps your decision. Discuss.
  2. Definitely get the MRI. Knowledge is power and you just don't know what it will show.
  3. Ok, finished off the fruit-- 2 more HUGE pans of fruit cobbler in the oven now. We lost so much food! I was able to save a bit in coolers, but it just kills me to think of how much we had to toss!! And living with no fridge and just coolers... well, that has been a challenge!!!
  4. Growing with Grammar might fit the bill. It does have diagramming.
  5. Ok, we've made a huge pan of blueberry/strawberry cobbler, 24 blueberry muffins, and now have 2 large pans of fruit leather in the oven. And we're not even halfway through all of it. Oh, and we had strawberry smoothies. Still have tons left. I think it will stay ok overnight and we'll toss in 2 more pans of fruit leather. and maybe do another fruit cobbler in the morning.
  6. We don't really have many local friends-- just moved here in September. My one close friend is out of town right now... :( I feel like a loser, but really, we don't know many people! I know people casually through dance or soccer but not enough to call them for this!
  7. Ok, so we won't have our freezer/fridge working until next week either Tuesday or Wednesday when the part he ordered gets in. So, no freezer/fridge foods. Blueberry muffins are happening for sure. Gotta find something with no white flour but I think I can get a recipe for that. I don't know what else. Maybe a gallon of margaritas for myself.

  9. You know, that gave me an idea... I could vitamix the thawed fruit, pour into cubes and refreeze. I think that would avoid the grossness of it and allow me to save it! Is that breaking any food safety rules to refreeze previously frozen and then thawed fruit?
  10. Our freezer thermostat died and the guy is fixing it today. I've got about 20 lb of frozen fruit that are thawed. I'd prefer not to refreeze them because they will freeze all clumpy and gross. If you had to use up about 10 lb of frozen (thawed) strawberries, 7 lb of frozen mixed berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries) and 3 lb of frozen blueberries what would you make? Oh, and we avoid almost all sugar/flour. Yeah, that makes it harder, I know! :) Oats are ok.
  11. First, I am VERY sorry. My husband lost his job last spring (he's a teacher and they let a few hundred teachers go in his district). He had only been teaching there for a semester. To make matters worse, his principal gave him a terrible review. He had never had a bad review before in 10+ years of teaching. One district nearby rejected his application due to the negative principal review. Thankfully though, another district hired him and he actually loves his new school, makes significantly more money, and is much much happier here. In the end, other than losing a bit of income over the summer and having to pay for Cobra for insurance, it worked out fine. It was worth the trauma/fear/etc... because we're in a better place now. I hope you have the same happy ending!! I heard this kind of stuff from many people when he found out he was being let go, and I kind of rolled my eyes that they were happy in the end over the unemployment, but for us it truly did work out that way.
  12. If you use it for the Art History section or something is there a path or you just click on stuff that looks interesting?
  13. I have looked at Khan Academy several times and wondered how in the world you use it. I get that there are videos and practice afterwards. But how do you keep track of what you've watched and used and answered. Is there like a "path" you set and follow as you work through things? Am I stupid?
  14. No. They can give input, but I make the decisions. The End.
  15. Yeah, I was in a convocation at a university in HK in August. 10,000 people in a small room, standing room only. I may have been the only one wearing deodorant! The BO thing in tropical areas is vicious! But the solution is probably antiperspirant and deodorant, not perfume!
  16. Yeah, I've never told anyone in person that they reek. Thought it? Yes. Said it? No. Well, I've told my sister not to wear perfume when I'm around her because she's my sister. She still does, of course, because that's how she rolls. She just puts on like half as much.
  17. I can't answer for everyone, but for me it is not an issue unless we are sitting next to each other or in other close contact. So in a restaurant, unless you're at my table, I don't care. If you're shopping in Target, no problem. I do avoid the perfume sections of stores and will not shop at a specific JC Penney by our house that has a huge Sephora you have to walk through to get to the Penney's section. I always get sprayed by the overly aggressive perfume girls- not worth the risk. I don't begrudge anyone the right to wear scented products. I just won't be sitting near you. One spritz of a citrus-scented body spray would not bother me, probably not even if you were sitting on my lap! ;)
  18. It isn't like this is an uncommon thing, though! And I found the OP's wording to be a humor-laced vent at a common issue that most people are aware of. I have always been smell-sensitive and prone to get migraines from strong perfumes. I can't even use scented lotion on my hands or just the smell of them on my hands will give me a migraine. And no, I don't mean a headache- I mean a real, honest-to-God migraine that knocks me out of life for a day or two. I found it humorous when we were at a staff development while living overseas. There was a discussion of cultural differences and someone brought up that Americans are slathered in too much scented product. The Brits, Aussies, Chinese, and Koreans in the room all agreed that Americans use far too many scented products and smell far too strongly because of it. I started paying attention after that and realized that if a Korean friend was wearing perfume I could only smell it if I was sitting a few inches from her or hugging her or something. My American friends smelled so strong I could smell them several feet away.
  19. Ugh! I know! We actually left church last spring once because we walked in and the entire sanctuary smelled like a perfume bomb had been let off. I had a full-blown migraine creeping in before we left and was miserable for a solid 36 hours afterwards. I was only in the building for 3 or 4 minutes! I truly think people don't know how much it physically hurts those who are sensitive to it. It isn't a personal preference thing... it's a health thing. Well, I guess it is my personal preference not to have agonizing pain. So yeah, personal preference.
  20. I purchased Writing Strands. I am pretty sure buying a pack of Charmin would have been more helpful than buying Writing Strands. It is junk. I should sell it, but I'd feel the need to include an apology note in the package.
  21. I worked in a movie theater in high school. We did not prohibit people from entering with food. It was frowned upon but not something we actively prevented. People brought hot pizzas sometimes! I always take snacks and water. I have no issue with it. I pay for the movie and have no guilt over this.
  22. Susan, those look good! And that's a good idea- I may have her drop to maybe 1 day a week of it just to keep her fresh. She types stories a lot, so I think she will maintain her speed, but it is such a useful skill in life- I'd hate for her to lose it! I assume it is similar to a bicycle- once you have it, you maintain it?
  23. We've used DancePad typing (or whatever that BBC thing is called) and my girls are pretty bored with it after a year. I'm looking to mix up their typing with something else. I always prefer free and online. I do not want a cd-based program as their computer does not have a cd/dvd drive (we use an external one when they need one but it is a pain). Thanks for any ideas! Also, wondering when others stop using a typing program. My older daughter took a few typing tests and is around 30 wpm. I'm wondering at what point I should consider her "graduated" from typing. Thoughts?
  24. Oh man, that is horrible. Please keep us posted. Heartbreaking.
