  1. a child with a moderate mental delay? Dh and I are very seriously adopting a special needs little boy from the Ukraine. If you read my brag earlier you will know that both my dd's are very quick with school work so what differences can I expect? From what we know so far X most likely has a thyroid issue and it is the root of the delay so I don't know what kind of meds and or alternative treatments coupled with proper nutrition will do to help him catch up and be the best he can be. I also worry about the language barrier but I have another friend currently adopting from there and a friendly acquantince has 4 children all adopted from the Ukraine so I can get help with that and he will be able to keep more of his culture. adding: He is 4 1/2 so I would not do a formal education right now but I would like to start some things to help stimulate his mind. From what I gather a lot of delays are due to the lack of one on one that these kids get.
  2. My dd#1 just got back all her standardized test results and in 2nd grade she is working at a 6th grade level. Her language skills though tested at 10th grade. I have worked hard to help them communicate well and it is paying off. Her reading was at 6th grade and only 3 categories came in at 4th grade level. I had been concerned because she was slacking at school and complaining that the work was too hard. I'm glad to have the results though because it helps me know how to teach her when we start home education.
  3. My cousins did this until they had an unfortunate incident and I also thought that this was what the OP was going to say.
  4. Vitamin-E helped me with my 3rd pregnancy but it can make an irritable uterus more irritable so I had to stop it. I also took Magnesium until 36 weeks to help prevent pre-term labor and bed rest again and after I had to stop the Vitamin-E I drank one cup of coffee a day because it can help with those things too.
  5. My father was made to switch too but my mom would not so my family was composed of all lefties because so were me and my sister. My spouse is a righty and so are both girls. My son shows more interest in using his right hand to eat and play but he is trying to learn how to kick and he only does that with his left leg. I guess a 13mo learning to front kick is a side effect of taking him to TKD with me. He also likes to ride in the Ergo, on my back, while I practice my forms.
  6. W've been horseback riding, to Dixie Stampede, the Aquarium, and all were worth it. We always eat at The Old Mill and if you are there during their busy season eat early or late because the wait can be brutal. Last time we stayed at the Wilderness and then went camping. We didn't do tons because M was only 2.5 months old and I was still not fully recovered from my c-section but we had a great time. It is really a great place for families.
  7. We are O.K. My ssiter is here with her family because they are from Huntsville and don't have power. Everyone else is safe but we lost contact with dh's family for all of yesterday. He took a long drive to try to find them. Hi Hayes. I didn't know you were here.
  8. We're O.K. All of our fmily is out of power except for us but we had no loss of life or property. I rode the storms out at a friends house with a basement and my dh got a call from a local news station and left after the first round of storms to go up-ling on location shots from Guntersville and Arab. I'm glad he mainly does sports work instead of news because I don't think my nerves could stand a lot of news.
  9. My dd's school teaches Spanish from 1st grade through 3rd or 4th and again in hs. I want to continue this but they don't use a ton of curriculum for it because the teacher is a native speaker. What should I use for my girls? I'll have an advanced K5 and a 3rd grader. The 5yo can read on about a 1st grade level right now. We do have Muzzy in all the languages except Chinese but I don't know if that would be good for them or not. How can a video really count as class time? And how often should we do lessons on a foreign language at their ages?
  10. nak so excuse the typos please could you compile a list of what is being brought and send it out like a menu. Some people would notice the shortages and bring something extra. Then next time make a sign up list with categories like Entree, Sides, Desserts, Drinks, etc. and how many of each are needed. Don't forget to add the cups, plates, and cutlery.
  11. Don't be embarrassed. I think in the OP's situation it is occuring very frequently and several people are doing it. In my family we have all done this on occasion but it isn't a constant thing. I've know my dh for 17 years and he still has one line that gets me every time but he doesn't use it every day so its funny. If it became an issue I would talk to my dh about it and he would work on it and if my kids did something I would first talk about it with them. If that did not work they would get push-ups because that is my punishment for disrespect. I usually start them out with 15 for the 8yo because she is a competitive gymnast and I know that she can do 50+ without much of a problem so 15 is a warning. The 5.5yo is also a gymnast but she doesn't compete yet so she starts with 5 and for both girls if the issue continues we add on in incriments of 5. They do this in both gynmastics and TKD so I tired it one day and I was amazed at the difference in behavior.
  12. Nope. We set a rule of a family name and a Bible name for our kids so they have a deeper meaning to us than just a name. They have a history and they also exibit characteristics of their Biblical namesakes.
  13. It was easy for me for a year but after that it is really hard. I was diagnosed with GD with my last pregnancy so if I ate bad it made my baby sick so out went the sugar. I am no longer diabetic but I am still insulin resistant so I need to stay off of sugar but since January I have had a hard time with it. My main motivation now is size. I lost from a 18 to an 8/10 and I do not want to go back. Could you have an outside trigger for the sugar cravings? Stress and hormones really get to me.
  14. I think its a wonderful idea and I am going to try this with my girls and the boy when he is old enough.
  15. I've made a little bit with my dh when he was interested but it was not feasable for us. It is a lot like making soap.
