  1. So than you also agree that birth control pills are not prohibited and that a case can be made that early term abortions are okay with Jesus, yes? Because there is no single place in the gospels where we find Jesus addressing the idea of abortion. Does that mean we are meant to follow the teaching already in place and he did not address it because it was such a common cultural understanding? Or was it because it was of no eternal significance and we are left to follow our conscience? If it is the latter, than why is it not also acceptable for variance of choices in other matters, such as homosexuality? If it is the former, do the Old Testament instructions about how to treat a person causing the death of an unborn child render the evangelical church's position on abortion and birth control unscriptural?
  2. And, dispite any insistence otherwise, is you interpreting what you've read.
  3. And of all the relationship dynamics Jesus addressed homosexuality is nowhere to be found.
  4. That is so far removed from what was written that it passes incredulity, moves through incivility, and lands somewhere in the vicinity of personal insult
  5. The Church has most certainly changed. From the day of Pentecost forward the Church has consistently been in the process of becoming. That is why even in the epistles we see conflict between leaders in the Church. Was circumcision necessary to be a Christ follower? Could believers eat meat offered to other gods? Yes, the world has changed. But the Church has changed as well.
  6. But it is very much the same. At the root both death and divorce involve grieving for the extended family.
  7. Holy High Horse Batman! Are you seriously saying that for a couple millennia of church history the Christians were wrongheaded in engaging in scholarly interpretation, in listening to the voices of those whose vocation was the study of scripture? Are you aware of the arrogance of saying that your current denomination/body of worshipers has a superior grasp on Biblical matters than the millions of faithful who have gone before?
  8. Which item would you argue has not been held by the Christian community at some point in history or justified by the scriptural interpretation of that time?
  9. I know that you and I have gone around this dead horse before... Just because you (specifically) do not read certain Biblical passages as supportive of X does not negate the fact that X was a position held by Christians and justified by their interpretation of scripture. This is the historically verifiable case with a myriad of issues: slavery divorce women in the workplace interracial marriage left-handed-ness mental illness as spiritual deficiency epilepsy as demonic possession abuse of children abuse of women persecution of those with differing religious beliefs To say that because you (specifically) in a post-modern reading of the Bible do not hold the above to be justified does not change that they once were not only held, but to some degree accepted across Christendom.
  10. Which, if true, would mean that centuries worth of scholars were just goldbricking instead of doing real work. By that logic we do not need literature courses; just provide the books and make sure they get read. And prepare to flunk any student that compares the plot of The Crucible to McCarthyism or dares to say Animal Farm is not about life on the farm.
  11. I was reading a blog post earlier today that made me think of this thread: http://www.adamhamilton.org/blog/the-bible-homosexuality-and-the-umc-part-one I don't know that there are more painful parent-adult child interactions over faith today than any other time in history. Although...I bet Paul experienced some pretty intense Passovers with family after the name change and all.
  12. Yep. And even with the comparison to right vs left handedness, most parents would agree that forcing a child who is showing strong inclination to be a lefty to use their right hand is not productive or in the child's best interest.
  13. Seconding the "what to do" series workbooks. The worry book is very good. I would also start looking for a licensed play therapist. Teaching coping strategies is beneficial for anyone, all medical conditions aside.
  14. I was pleasantly surprised as well with this show. Another show that I have enjoyed is Lucifer. So far the writing on it is good. (she says 4 shows into season 1)
  15. First I would make sure that the treatment course is addressing the entire problem. (ie undiagnosed bipolar) Then, assuming we were addressing the whole issue, I would work with her therapist to help educate her on how SSRIs work. Including the fact that it can take more than a month to see full effect. I would, with the MD who prescribed the medication and your daughter, make a checklist of conditions under which medication will be changed/discontinued. Allowing her to have a voice gives her control and may allow a slight easing in the tension of the moment and the transitioning into adulthood.

  17. Yep. My grandfather used to use it in reference to the church's district superintendent. frequently. He also used it when about to do something he believed necessary but, if discussed, likely to end in a long debate with Grandma and still no action.
  18. You are dead to me. Bwahaha- Seriously, there is something wonderful and liberating about getting rid of stuff. Even books.
  19. Great grandparents used it frequently- 2 from Ohio, 1 from Texas I used it in my "Ann with an e" phase.
  20. "Classics" that stuck with me: Fahrenheit 451 A Separate Peace A Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthur's Court" And Then There Were None The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
  21. Except it isn't the same. Me can choose not to shave, and it costs them nothing. Menstration is not optional for women.
  22. You're right. Post number 23 and the hysterical girls of the crazy expensive university system were condemned as vapid, grasping twits. I am so tired of every time young adults bring up an issue that bothers them and they are trying to make better or figure out seeing them run down and labeled as "society's problem". Tampons may not be the heart of the problem, but the conversation has to start somewhere.
  23. I like quoted as art- But the cheesy cutesy stuff makes me a touch twitchy. My mom and sister love it and are forever buying it for me. Because they don't get that I don't love it too. The ones with all the dates make me cringe because all I can think is "why are you putting potential password info on display?"
  24. So glad to hear that you are able to be home now!
