  1. You absolutely could do it without the manuals, but I highly suggest purchasing them. You can find them used at great prices here and on vegsource. I have found them to be an invaluable resource.
  2. When reading my response keep in mind that MFW is all that we have ever used (but I have researched and reviewed a ton of others) and we have only been homeschooling for 2 years. We really enjoy MFW. It is easy to use, but not so easy that I feel unnecessary. I, personally, enjoy planning and yet I appreciate the reassurance a boxed curriculum provides. I feel that MFW gives me the best of both worlds. I LOVE the book selections and that I have the freedom to spend my money on the books that I choose rather than being forced to stick with certain ones. I always purchase what our budget allows and utilize the library to fill in the gaps. This has never been a problem for us because my girls love the library and I feel it is a great learning experience for them. It is very easy to follow. It is easy to supplement. I have always added various things from Ambleside/Simply Charlotte Mason. We also use FIAR and we added Singapore from the very beginning. It is gentle and yet still fulfilling. My daughter hates to write so we have been very happy with the writing requirements so far. She doesn't feel overwhelmed, but is still challenged. Children who are more adept at writing may need supplementation in this area in the earlier years. One thing I haven't cared for is the science portion. I don't really like the Usborne books that MFW utilizes, but I haven't bothered to supplement that area yet. I likely will in the future if still necessary. I also really dissected the 1st grade curriculum, but that was mainly due to my own preferences and teaching philosophies. I don't feel that that particular year provided enough meat. I still used almost all of the materials, but I supplemented heavily and rearranged quite a bit. I am planning to continue using MFW as long as it is a good fit for us. I was on the verge of switching to Sonlight for next year and changed my mind again at the last minute. MFW just feels right for us. I hope you are able to come to an equally satisfying and reassuring conclusion soon!
  3. Thank you so much for your input. This is exactly the information I was looking for.
  4. I purchased a used Adventures TM that has the student sheets included in the back. For those of you who are experienced with Adv, I was hoping you could help me determine whether or not I still need to purchase the student sheets pack from MFW. I do know that the tm doesn't include the state sheets and cards. What exactly are those and what information do they cover? Do you know if anything else is missing from this particular tm edition that is now included in the student sheets pack? I have already been given some great suggestions from the seller regarding state bird/flower resources; will I need to substitute further if I choose not to purchase the student sheets pack? Having never used Adv, I just want to be sure I am covering all of the bases and have any necessary supplies. Thanks!
  5. Thank you both! I'm going to look into them all (especially the free ones).
  6. All of the above! I like to read along with my mood, so I like to have all the bases covered.
  7. Ooooo, thank you! That is exactly what I am looking for!
  8. I've found a couple, which is probably all that my resistant writer can handle right now! Thanks so much :) We would love to find a friend to write. My DD loves arts/crafts, Taylor Swift, anything having to do with horses, cooking/baking and reading. She would be absolutely thrilled to send and receive mail regularly! PM me if interested.
  9. Free or subscription. We are getting tired of the few we use.
  10. I am at a dead end with my own personal reading. What are your favorite adult books? Fiction, non-fiction, whatever...but NOT homeschool related:D
  11. We don't have set school time. We start after everyone is dressed and ready for the day and work at a pace that is appropriate for the mood of my 1st grader (I also have a 4 yr old and 18 month old to keep up with during this time). If we work straight through with no breaks we can usually finish within 3 hours. But we rarely do that. She usually takes several short breaks in between lessons/activities. Wednesdays are more relaxed and Fridays are reserved for field trips. We do some sort of reading and math every day of the week (even weekends).
  12. I am not overly fond of the Usborne books either. I have been supplementing with library books a lot this year. How is she doing with Apologia?
  13. We use Singapore, MFW, and Miquon along with some extra online practice :)
  14. We will be using MFW Adventures but are considering supplementing science. For those with experience using MFW, do you think the science is sufficient, rewarding, challenging, rich, etc? How would you compare it to Apologia or Sonlight science? I don't want to spend extra money or unnecessarily complicate our curriculum, but I want something full and exciting. It is just so tough to decide:glare:
  15. Thank you all! You've all been very helpful.
  16. No confusion at all! Thank you so much for your perspective. I certainly don't want to overwhelm her and am definitely partial to the natural methods of learning. I think I will just start out with MFW alone and see how it goes :)
  17. I am a brand new home schooler and still feeling my way around, so please forgive me if this question shows my ignorance. I began home schooling my kindergartener half way through the school year very abruptly. I have been doing my own unit studies along with HWT & 100 EL. After tons of research I settled on MFW for 1st grade. My question is do I need to add anything to this curriculum for a rather advanced 6 year old? I have noticed that many have added various math, spelling, history, reading programs. Thank you all so much for your help!
