  1. I think if I order two and only use one, I'm only charged for one. It's the first question I have when I call to schedule it. And this has nothing to do with the topic at hand...but moving is exhausting!
  2. I knew I wasn't crazy for thinking two! Thank you! I just don't see how it's possible to get all we have into one. I'm ordering two!
  3. We're moving 1300 miles and have had so many bumps along the way. After crunching dozens of numbers, we (think) that a UHAUL U Box is the right way to go for us. But I'm curious...has anyone used these before? Are they pretty decently spacious? I can't tell if we're going to need one or two boxes. I see the cubic feet and I am looking at our stuff....and I don't know. I marked off 8ft by 5ft with tape. I think we need two, but my overbearing but well meaning mother in law is insisting we need only one. Her basis is that we aren't moving a couch or a dining room table. We have, among the tons of boxes, the following: Two desks - one smaller, one larger One 7 ft tall oak book shelf Two dressers - both pretty large Our son's platform bed and the headboard - pretty big Two end tables - small One coffee table - long, but narrow My husband is pretty brilliant when it comes to packing...but I'm still nervous. We have a lot of boxes of things that we got when we married and had a lot of items from when our current house was still our rental and before my in laws bought it when it came for sale. Thanks for any advice you can give if you've used these U-Box things. For us, it seems to be the cheapest option we've found - especially if we need only one box. Even if we need two, it still is cheaper than renting a truck and paying for the insane amount of gas for the truck. I think. Unless I miscalculated. I don't know. I'm stressed and rambling.
  4. Another vote for Otterbox! And ours is used to protect the iPod against my "drops everything" husband...not the kid!
  5. Between my husband and son, we have so many allergies that I just cook the entire meal allergen free. Dairy/lactose free, gluten free, nut free and nightshade free. It's.....not easy. But it's easier to eliminate all the allergens and start from there. But if it is just the one allergy, I agree with others when they say to set aside a portion and make a dairy free alternative. But do teach her about what is safe and what isn't - it's surprising to learn what has hidden dairy. I make sure that Deacon reads labels with me all the time so he knows what to look for. Also, I'm glad that you finally have answers! Hope she gets to feeling better soon!
  6. I agree with nearly every response here. The Hive always has such good advice. I also wanted to add that AirTran was cheapest for us last year - we checked every airline, had flexible days, compared airports, etc etc etc and AirTran was always a few hundred dollars cheaper. First bag/per person flies free. Three of us, round trip from LaGuardia to Orlando and then Orlando back to LaGuardia was $600 including taxes. Not bad for the middle of the summer! =)
  7. I chose that he does, but probably should have chosen that either of us does. He wakes at 4:10 am and is out the door by 5:00. If I am coherent and not falling over, I make it for him - but that's only about 2 times of out the 6 days a week he works. Hence, why I chose that he makes it. If I could fall asleep after he left in the mornings, I would do it daily. He's so appreciative when I do the easiest, silliest things, so it makes me love doing things for him. I just wish I could make my body do it everyday, haha. 4:10 is scary sometimes!
  8. I'm not exactly sure if what we do is "loop scheduling", but I think it is? There's subjects that we do every day (WWE1/reading assignments, SOTW, our Math, some sort of art project and whatever he wants to learn about (right now, it's space. Last month was dinosaurs...it's kind of a free period, so to speak. Whatever he wants and however often it changes is up to him). Then we are looping (I think it is, at least....for us, that means once or twice a week) our science, Geography, his piano lessons). We school year round, too, for various reasons. Like I said, I'm not sure if what we are doing is looping, but I think your schedule is very rigorous and sounds good to my novice ears! I wish I could be more help, haha. I'm sorry. But like I said, I think it sounds good :001_smile:
  9. I am moderately creative. I can come up with a few things, but just like Mabeline, I can recreate anything I can see. Craftgawker is my favorite place to scourge up ideas and Pinterest is right behind in line as my second favorite! Much more crafty than artistic. My son wants to do a craft every day...so it's fun planning out the crafts. That being said, once I see the original idea, then I'm creative and can spin my own style on it. A favorite thing to do is to take yard sale tables, dressers, etc and sand them down, refinish the wood and repaint it. Give it a new life, sort of.
  10. 1. Your boy is absolutely adorable. 2. I love the name Oliver. 3. I say, go with your gut. 4. Your boy is so adorable. 5. I realize that 1 and 4 are the same, but they needed repeating. :001_smile:
  11. I don't remember since I was reading before age 2. I kid, I kid. My parents had been teaching me phonics at home instead of going to pre-school (which was so scandalous in my itty bitty town!), so I entered Kindergarten with a good idea on how to read, but they didn't start teaching us. So my parents kept teaching me at home and I really mastered how to read at about 5/6 years old. But when I entered 1st grade, they were teaching sight words. And had the nerve to tell my parents that they should stop teaching phonics, since it goes against what they were teaching. I remember my parents being pretty upset. In fact, if you ask my dad, he still gets his feathers ruffled about it.
  12. Posted too quickly, I got my search function to work. :001_smile:
  13. My "search" function isn't working and I lent my copy of WTM to another mom. So I am sure this has been answered before, and I apologize. Is it third grade to start Latin? Seems like it was third. And when was Greek? I don't remember that one at all. I'm asking because we were criticized for not starting it already  Our boy can't even read English yet, for crying out loud.
  14. I've BTDT....and with my gyno, it didn't matter. The pap smear didn't need to be redone at all, and honestly...it kind of hurt less...if that makes any sense. I've always had pressure and sharp pain while having a pap done. But last time, since my cervix was already in a snit, it was much more comfortable. Back to the topic at hand. With my doctor, it wasn't a problem. Hope this helps your friend. :001_smile:
  15. I absolutely agree....sometimes the comments are so horrible. I have to be careful sometimes how far I scroll down because I sometimes can't handle the horrible hatred that so many controversial articles seem to generate. Also, I'm from Bergen County...and I've read a lot about this tragedy. And you're right - the comments people have left have been especially awful. My husband writes for an online news website...and I won't read his column because I hate when people attack him. I don't care if they disagree with him - as long as they are civil. He's received death threats, hate mail, and personal attacks on his character and it makes me ill. People are ruthless due to the anonymity that Internet has provided. And it's not always a bad thing....but it certainly isn't always a good thing!
  16. This scam has been happening around my area, too! It hasn't happened in my specific neighborhood yet, but the local news has even started talking about it and my mother in law said it was in the paper. Same exact scenario, too. Baby formula, just one can would help, etc. Several houses have since been robbed. Please be careful and I am so glad that you called the police and that they took you seriously. =)
  17. Whenever I'm stressed, or have let my ADD get the best of me, or feel down in the dumps after a particularly tiring day, I go to a solemn yet uplifting song - Sia, Breathe Me Makes me admit that I fumbled (I have a hard time with that), remember to breathe, and that another day will come to try again. =)
  18. Ohh, good to know! Thank you so much for the quick replies! I love this forum.
  19. I did a forum search, and didn't see anything. If this is a frequent or silly question, I apologize. We have chosen Story of the World to start with our almost first grader. He'll be six in July, and we school year round, with our "new" year happening in the middle of the summer. I think. I don't know. We're still working through stuff. Haha. My question, though, is this - Can we still use SoTW even if he can't read independently? I know this sounds dumb, but I'm nervous about him retaining the info. He works so much better when he can work through things independently, and if I'm there reading the entire thing with him, I worry he won't retain the information. He does math independently, and prefers it that way. Same with handwriting. And the other things we do. Though we aren't doing much, yet. As a side story/background info - he's really struggling with reading. Two years ago, it looked like everything was clicking right in. But over time, he has become so discouraged. He can sound out almost anything, and can struggle through simple sentences if he is in the *right* mood. But oftentimes, he is so dejected about reading in general, so he sets himself up to not be able to do it. Does that make any sense? And as soon as he makes a mistake, it's the end of the world and a temper tantrum occurs and he gets so angry. He's discouragement comes from mastering a sound, and then sounding out a word, and then BAM! English throws him a curve ball and that same letter/groups of letters suddenly sounds different. And we are trying to step back and not harp on the issue or let him know that we are freaking out on the inside because we want him to love to read...and if it feels like a chore, he won't want to do it. But at the same time, he'll be six soon and we have a huge move across the country coming up and ahh! I may be a little stressed out. Anyhow, back to the topic at hand. SoTW....still workable with children who can't read yet? And if you're still reading this long ramble, I owe you a cookie. And a hug. :001_smile:
  20. Really? There are many of us (myself included) that simply don't have the time to write a blog. I applaud those who do. Good for you. But just because you don't advertise a blog should not make ANYONE question your legitimacy. No idea that having a blog was so "clique-ish".
  21. I have never heard of Melatonin, but I am doing my research now! And I am relieved to hear that we aren't alone. Thank you for the advice and other ideas. Tonight, surprisingly, he has been pretty quiet. I can still hear him in there singing and talking, but he hasn't really been asking us for anything. I hope he falls to sleep a little earlier...I'm so worried about my boy. And, with that, I'm going to get off here and cuddle with my husband. =)
