  1. I will wear a fleece headband if it is in the 40s, and I have a wool headband that I wear when it is colder. Hats seem to trap in too much heat for me even when it is really cold. I also like to wear running gloves or a running top that has the built in fold over hand covers. I have running tights that I wear when it gets into the 40s and wear Smartwool socks (all year round!). I have cold induced asthma, so when it is really cold I have a Psolar half facemask that I love. It has a removable filter type thing that keeps the air warm and moist. I used to use a bandanna around my mouth, but the Psolar is warmer and fits tighter. I am going to ask dh for some yaktrax for Christmas, so I will be all set :) Also, it gets dark early in the winter, so I wear reflective velcro bands if I am going to be on the roads.
  2. We use the Fresh20 veg menus and they have worked out great here. We are a family of 5 and the menu serves 4. I have been using it as is and setting out leftovers and side dishes with our garden produce to make sure there is enough for everyone. I have been saving money on weekly grocery bills and wasting less food overall. Totally worth it!
  3. Doing both would be too much for my oldest. We are on Week 11 of WWS and in the middle of Hake 5. Could you figure out which ones are included in WWS and just cover those sections of Hake that don't overlap. From what we have covered so far, I think each of the following are covered early on in WWS and if you take the sections where the outlining research has been done for them, you might even be able to make a case for the research report. descriptive narrative Expository Essay Response to lit - plot Reading summaries Fictional Narrative
  4. We started up this week, and I have just been exhausted at the end of each day. Adding that 3rd kid into the realm of "real" school work seems to have made 5x more work. Things are going well...just wearing me out. My oldest is talking about going to public school next year for 7th grade, so I am trying to enjoy it while I can (and keep it as fun and engaging as possible so she changes her mind!)
  5. I can speak with complete authority on this topic since that is how my name is spelled. I pronounce it like the alley behind a building. When I see it in print, I assume someone is writing about me!:biggrinjester: If it was a guy's name though, I would assume it was pronounced like Mohammed Ali (ah-lee)
  6. I just sent them an email, but I know they typically require a 2 year contract. They probably can't hook it up in time anyway.
  7. That is cool. We use a small local co-op for out internet (only option where we live). They don't look like they are doing anything like that.
  8. I am wondering how many people will have limited access to Olympic coverage due to not having cable or satellite. I really wish there would be a way to pay for internet streaming or a 2 week cable package! If the wind isn't blowing too much, I should be able to get some of the over the air NBC coverage, but so many of the really cool sports are only available on cable channels or internet streaming.
  9. :iagree: So does anybody have any good websites for highlights :crying:
  10. It looks like this site has a link to redirect US people to the nbc site. Bummer. The BBC LIVE links give me this message: I'm sorry, we can't show this content in your area. We don't have cable or satellite, but we should be able to get NBC over the air. I was just hoping to watch something other than swimming and gymnastics online. Grrr. I would pay for streaming if it was available, I just don't want to pay for a 2 year cable/satellite agreement to get 2 weeks worth of TV.
  11. Iowa recently started giving a paper copy and the plastic is mailed. I miss my Arizona lifetime license!
  12. :grouphug: It sounds like such a gut wrenching situation. It doesn't sound like you are completely willing to walk away from the situation though. Just make sure you are involved on your own terms. You do need to protect yourself (emotionally) and your family. I like the idea of helping board her cats or finding someone who can foster them (although that might be easier said than done). That way she can accept help from your bro/cousin and have a place to live for a while without losing her cats. If she doesn't accept that, than it must not be what she is really after. I don't think I could ever give up on family completely, but at this point I wouldn't feel obligated to cater to her demands either. I would want to keep it on my terms at this point to protect myself. Sounds like a really tough situation and I am sorry that you are hurting.:crying:
  13. Update: Part of our discussion is on Goodreads and we have been having a weekly chat in a private chatroom. http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/73298-the-well-trained-moms
  14. That is how we have chosen to do it in Iowa. We dual enroll in the school district, and they get a small amount of state funding. My oldest goes just for band, they do standardized tests for free with a grade appropriate classroom (for compliance--our choice), and then we do our own thing the rest of the time. We have never had any issues where we felt they overstepped their bounds, and we actually have a great relationship with the school staff. They have been very welcoming.
  15. Avoid it! We have had it in the house for the last two weeks (why can't they get it all at once?), and from what I have read it is contagious for at least a week (possible in the stool for a month or more). This year's strain is pretty bad: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-04-19/hand-foot-mouth-virus/54419854/1 My kids had high fevers (pushing 105*) and their throats and mouths were so painful. The blisters are painful too and are an additional source of contagion (along with airborne and fecal sources).:ack2:
  16. I think your son did a great job! With each assignment, I am more impressed with the framework and organization in this writing program. I wish I had this kind of writing practice while I was in school!
  17. My daughter (10, 5th grade) just finished this week and I think it is the first one that really came together for her. It was also the first one that came close to 150 wds. We spent some time together going over which details she wanted to include, but she did the writing by herself. This is before we went over spelling and punctuation. Heliocentrism means the sun is at the center of the solar sytem. Copernicus said all the orbits were an exact circle. In the beginning, Johannes Kepler worked as an apprentice to a fifthteenth centuary astronomer, Tyco Brahe. They both thought the orbits were circle because Copernicus said so. They studied Mars and pictures of Mars, and could not figure out why it moves as it does. Then the intelegent astronomer Tyco Brahe died in 1601. Afterwards, Kepler tried to find an answer to the peculiar movements of Mars. He tried and tried to find an explanation for over five years. Eventuualy, he found that the orbits must be an ellispse. “The planetary orbit is elliptical and the sun, the sourse of movement, is at one of the foci of this ellispse†he said. With his discovoreries, he wrote a book called “Keplers First law of Planetary Motionâ€
  18. DD10 for K: WWE1 1st: PS 2nd: WWE2 (did every other week after week 18) 3rd: WWE3 (did every other week after week 18) 4th: WWE4 (did every other week after week 18) 5th: on week 5 of WWS1... She is doing great with it, and it is fun to see the pieces fitting together. (Also doing Hake Grammar 5) DS8: K:none (The copywork would have been too much for this lefty who doesn't like to hand write.) 1st: WWE1 2nd: WWE2 (currently on week 22) (Almost done with FLL3) DS6 K: WWE1(currently on week 5 and only doing 2-3 lessons/week. He is doing great, but seems so disappointed that we are not getting to read the entire story each time.) (Just starting the 2nd half of FLL1/2)
  19. So this just means that they will offer products that don't contain the pink slime, not that they are eliminating pink slime products from their shelves, right?
  20. We just got a mix of paprika, lemongrass, and sunflower. I love them so much. They replaced 15 year old Pfaltgraff that was getting so chipped.
  21. We have a "pizza party". Since we make homemade pizza every Friday anyway, we usually just dress it up with a family movie or a special topping or possibly dessert. It means something to the kids, but doesn't really cost me any time or money :) They are so funny because the other two kids always thank the honoree for the pizza that night (even though we would have had it anyway). We do this when the kids finish a SM book, WWE level or FLL level, but that is about it.
  22. DD10: An elementary school art teacher and author DS8: A baseball player (outfielder) DS6: A farmer with no poisons. Organic.
  23. I think the Fire runs an Amazon shell over Android, so you are running the Amazon version of Android. When you root the Nook you are just running Android. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either for most applications. For those that do run Android off an SD card on the Nook, do you get occasional "force close" errors?
