  1. Aww, that brings back childhood memories! THat was a show that was on TV on Sunday mornings...I used to LOVE that! THanks for the link! (BTW, I was born and raised in Germany)
  2. Is there a specific reason why you want to mix it up? I'm just trying to understand why you feel you need to do American History right now? The great thing about SOTW is that it teaches History chronologically, which makes it easier to understand, especially for younger children...because you're starting with the beginning and going on , rather than jumping all over the map, so to speak. Once you get to SOTW 3 it does cover early American History (up to 1850) and SOTW 4 covers modern times. I was just wondering if there was a specific reason or do you just feel pressure because they follow a different order in PS?
  3. Thank you for posting that! That is so true, but most times we forget that...
  4. :iagree: I have the same problem with my dd (just turned 7). It's very frustrating when I know that she knows how to do the task, but she just doesn't want to and just wastes a lot of time whining about it or staring into space... Haven't really found a great solution to this or how to handle it well...
  5. I Love that! Might have to try that with my dd!
  6. I would describe my own children as "reading well" once they can read chapter books fluently, independently, and for pleasure. :iagree: That is not to say that they're not doing well & progressing well before they achieve that, though!
  7. We got wedding band tattoos for our 2nd anniversary (11 yrs. ago) and so far they both still look great, no smudging or anything, but we just have a tribal style design, not a word. As far as the pain...it only takes 10-15 to get it done, so the pain is not really a big factor, since you're done pretty quick... ;-)
  8. Are you maybe using self rising flour? You need to use just plain white flour. The receipe I used is equal parts flour & salt & 1/2 water & they came out fine. My kids painted them with tempera and crafts paint & I sprayed them with clear coat once the paint was dry.
  9. Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I will definitely try them!
  10. We've been using Modern Curiculum Press so far (Spelling workout A & B)but my DD doesn't seem to retain all her spelling words... she will do ok during the lesson & test at the end, but once we get to the Review lesson (every 6th lesson) she gets almost half of them wrong... She doesn't seem to be a natural speller and I dont know if I need to switch to something else or give her more practice? I just don't know how to get it to "stick"- I'm a natural speller & never had problems with it, so I real;y don't know how to help her with this... I'm also a stickler when it comes to spelling, so this does really bother me...:-( Any advice will be much appreciated! Thanks!
  11. My dd (almost 7) is having a hard time with Math facts, etc... one day she knows them and does her worksheet without any problems, the next day she throws a big fit about it and says she doesn't know what to do or how to do it... and I just don't know what to do anymore... we use Calvert Math and I do like it, but I need something other than flash cards to work on math facts... I saw an add for this website: funwithfigures.com - and I was hoping I could get some unbiased feedback on it? Has anybody tried it? I just need something fun for her to practice with- she hates the flashcards and i can't take the tantrums & tears any more....but I don't want to go on with our regular curriculum if she doesn't have the basics down... or do I expect too much? Thanks for your input!
  12. I think you can print worksheets on spellingcity.com - or you can just let them do the practice on the PC. There's a lot of free spelling games and such... you just enter your own list of spelling words.
  13. Thanks so much for the great ideas! I will definitelly start a binder and check out those websites... She likes to look at the globe and I just printed out all the continents (on different colored papers each) to put on a big blue posterboard... Thanks again!
  14. I was wondering if i should be doing some sort of geography lesson with my 2nd grade dd? We're using SOW for history, and she doesn't specify a geography lesson in itself in TWTM, but I'm just wondering at what age she should start learning the continents, the states of the US, etc... I might be way too early to think about that, but I can't remember when I started learning tose things... Thanks!
  15. I would try the Master Cleanse (also called the lemonade diet). IT is a 10 day fast, where you only drink a homemade lemonade (the recipe is in the Master Cleanse book- check your library) and it's supposed to detox your body,e tc... but you should drop some pounds in the process.... Good Luck!
  16. :iagree: I became vegetarian when i was 16 and haven't looked back (I'm 37 now). My husband and ds (3) both eat meat, my dd (6) decided 2 years ago to be like mom and she is also vegetarian. I mostly make meals were the meat part is separate from the other foods ( like a starch, plus veggies plus burger/steak/chicken for the boys and do a lot of "soymeat" for us girls...) makes it easier to combine vegetarians & non in one meal . It all depends on what kind of food she likes. Also, I wouldn't be too concerned about the protein, because the American diet is way too protein rich & most people consume 2-3 times more than their bodies need. As long as she eats a lot of different fruits & veggies, whole grains (bread, pasta, brown rice) she will get all the protein she needs. I would not go with whole milk (if she even drinks cow milk, since that's not part of a true vegetarian diet), since all it has is extra saturated fat & nobody really needs that! Most soymilks have added calcium, if that's a concern. Or even calcium fortified OJ, etc... I wish her all the best ! It seems to me her Mom has mostly a problem with her doing something different than she is doing & maybe feels like your dsd is indirectly telling her (mom) that she is doing it all wrong (= eating meat). Some people get very offended when their children choose a path that's different from how they raised them... hope it all works out for them! Cudos to you for caring so much & trying to make their lives together better!
  17. I think a light shade of green looks really good with hardwood (or brown) floors....also, you might show your husband some light yellow/"beigy" yellow swatches and he might change his mind...there are soo many shades to choose from... a light blue would be nice too. I personally am not to crazy about neutrals on the walls, especially with brown floors it might be a bit much... You might just have to pick a couple of different colors and paint 2' squares in those colors (you can get little sample cans at Lowe's to try out a color) and live with it for a few days and see witch ones work best for you... Good luck & have fun with it!
  18. Hello! I'm using Calvert Math for first grade, that I got from a friend (who bought it used...etc. )so I don't have the Manipulatives that go with it. So far that wasn't a problem, but now it's referring to math flash cards with sums up to 18 and I don't know exactly what's on those cards or I would make some myself... Does anybody know what should be on those? Or is there a place online I can print some for free?? Thanks!
  19. Hello! I have a question about Calvert Math grade 1: I got it from a friend, who had bought it used, so I don't have the manipulatives that usually come with it and so far I was always able to work around that & just use other things, but now it's talking about Math Flash cards for sums to 18 & I don't know what's on these cards, so I can make them myself...or find some online to print... So, if you're using Calvert 1 or have in the past, can you tell me what exactly is on those flash cards? Are they just 1+1, 1+2, etc ? And are they actually supposed to memorize all those ? Thanks!!
  20. Thanks so much for all your suggestions! I will definitely look into some of these! Thanks Again!
