  1. I have a question for those that have used AAR pre-level 1 with their kids... I was wondering how quickly your kids learned all the letter names? My ds (4) loves the lessons and wants to do more than 1 a day, but I'm afraid if we go too fast he will not remember the letter names.... some letters are easy for him, but others he doesn't remember...so Iw as just wondering if I should slow down and just practice the ones he doesn't know right away more, or does it just sink in after a while with constant review & exposure? I do point out the capital letters & their names when we read books etc...and we go over the ABC chart at the beginning of each lesson... Thanks for your input! :001_smile:
  2. Thanks Ellie! That does make me feel better! It just seems that reading throught FLL2, they seem to expect them to be able to do it, so I really felt like I wasted a year on something that didn't stick... Thank you all!:001_smile:
  3. Thanks! I will have to try that! Did you just print out the workbook? Or how do you use KISS? THanks! :001_smile:
  4. We've been using FLL 1 & 2 with my dd (about to finish 2nd grade), but I don't feel that it sticks... in the end of book 2 she still has trouble identifying nouns, verbs, etc. in a sentence - so I'm wondering if I need to try a different grammar program for 3rd grade ? Or does it just take a while for it to stick? Does anybody use a grammar program other than FLL for 3rd grade that they love? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, since I really don't know any other grammar programs! Also, my budget is a bit tight , so I would prefer something that's not very expensive... Thanks in advance!
  5. we have a wooden lazy susan that I attached a bunch of empty cans (covered in nice papers) to the top for all the art supplies (pencils, crayons, brushes, gluesticks, etc) - it keeps it all together & looks cute & if both of my kids are working on art projects they can just turn it to get to the stuff they need...other than that just keep lots of papers, cardboard, toiletpaper rolls, etc. around and let them be creative. Have fun!:001_smile:
  6. Wow, these are beautiful! Will have to make one for my dd! THanks for sharing!
  7. :iagree: The only way I would even consider this is if you live in a very small town and you're talking about a very small Mom & Pop kind of store where you know the owners/employees and you're outside the only entrance to said store...
  8. I really like any of Jillian Michael's DVDs - you can just try some from the library to find out what style you like. Some intructors can be really annoying... I also like Jackie Warner and Stephanie Vitorino. :001_smile:
  9. HI! I just started teaching my kids (7 & 4) German and would love to find some german speaking friends in the North Houston area. PM me if you're interested! :001_smile:
  10. Do I need both the student book & the instructor guide for FLL3 or is the student book alone sufficient? Thanks!
  11. I was wondering what the difference is between "sentence composing..." and "story grammar..." - looking at it online, they look very similar and have some of the same sentences in the sample pages...? I'm just wondering if both are necessary along with Grammar land? Also, a general question about WWE - is it mainly just dictation and narration? We already do dictation in her spelling every day and unless FLL 3 is very different from 1 & 2 there is story narration included in it, so I'm wondering if that's going to be too much of the same? We haven't done WWE 1 or 2... Thanks for all your responses so far ! I really appreciate your ideas! :001_smile:
  12. Hi! I'm trying to figure out what all I need to do for LA in 3rd grade? We're using AAS for spelling , FLL for grammar, a cursive writing book and whatever books she's intested in for reading... Is there anything else I need to do for 3rd grade LA? Thanks!
  13. Thanks! Yeah, we watch stuff on YouTube sometimes - I grew up watching "Die Sendung mit der Maus" & my kids watch it occasionally. They also like "Pumuckl" which I watched when I was little - but it's not so great for language learning - unless you are trying to learn bavarian ;-) I was just hoping there would be something like "Deutsche Welle" online ... with more current stuff and some shows they have seen clips of and like ("Prinzessin Lillifee", etc.)... Thanks for your responses!
  14. I'm trying to find a website that has on demand german kids shows online... I've found a lot of news and adult content shows, but have a hard time finding a lot of german kids shows for my kids to watch... Our Cable provider doesn't offer "deutsche Welle" and it seems KIKA online doesn't offer a lot if you're not in Germany... any ideas? I wouldn't mind subscribing to it if it's fairly cheap... Thanks!
  15. I have to agree with the op about learning your heritage language. I think it's important that the kids are able to communicate with family abroad. I'm half Serbian and half German, was born and raised in Germany and have lived here in the US for 14 years. I did start out teaching my kids some serbian and my dd (7) can talk to my Mom and other relatives, although I didn't do very well keeping it up.. :-( (I, too, think in English and since Serbian was my 2nd language, I had a hard time remembering to speak it with the kids). I just started teaching them German and so far they are really enjoying it. You might check the bilingual message board for some advice and check out this site for resources: http://www.multilingualliving.com/2012/02/27/language-challenge-180-language-pages/ Good luck & have fun!
  16. I was just reading through some other threads and started to wonder if I need to add a writing program - like Writing With Ease - to our homeschool program? If you're using one, tell me about the benefits at this age? Also is WWE what most of you use? I was looking at the WWE workbook on Amazon and it seems for 1st & 2nd it's just copy work and narration, which we do in her handwriting lessons and with some books or stories. We do use FLL for Grammar which has narration also. I'm just wondering if a specific writing program is necessary? I haven't looked at 3rd grade Grammar yet, so I don't know if or how much of the writing is covered in that? We use AAS for spelling and do dictation in her spelling lesson & I don't think we need to do it any more than that... Please enlighten me! I'm trying to figure out what I'll be using next schoolyear & how much I need to save up for all our books, etc... Thanks!
  17. Thanks that looks great I had never heard of it before!:001_smile:
  18. I'm trying to figure out what to use for Geography next school year...so far I've used Evan-Moore Beginning Geography but I'm not sure what to do next year? What are you guys sing? I'm looking for something secular... Thanks!
  19. Thanks so much for all your opinions! Still not sure what I will do, but I do feel better knowing that some of your kids tested well using TT... Thanks again!
  20. I'm trying to decide if I want to stay with Calvert Math for 3rd grade or switch to Teching Textbooks? I heard a lot of good things about TT, but then I also read that it's not up to grade level compared to PS...?? My dd is not exactly fond of Math and sometimes it's really hard to get through the lessons, which is why I'm considering TT, since I wouldn't be the one teaching it... but I'm just not sure... So, tell me: what do you love about it, like about it, hate about it? Thanks!
